There are approximately 250 million persons with some degree of visual impairment. Did you know that the condition of your eyes reflects the condition of your cardiovascular system? What you put into your body has long-term effects on not only your heart, but also your eyesight.

Bread and Pasta

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the primary cause of blindness in those aged 65 and older, and studies have connected consumption of simple carbohydrates like those found in white bread and pasta with an increased risk of developing AMD. The reason for this is because your body can easily assimilate this sort of carb. As a result, blood sugar levels rise rapidly. Experts recommend switching to whole-grain options such as bread and pasta to avoid this.

Processed Meats

Sodium is abundant in foods like hot dogs, bacon, and deli meats. The rise in salt intake has been linked to hypertension. In your opinion, this could lead to:

The vision-impairing and even blinding condition known as hypertensive retinopathy.

Choroidopathy is a retinal disorder characterised by fluid accumulation.

Loss of vision and eventual death of nerves due to neuropathy caused by blocked blood flow.

Fried Foods

Trans fats included in deep-fried foods are linked to an increase in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, which in turn increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and even type 2 diabetes. Also, they produce dangerous molecules called free radicals that can kill or severely harm cells. Connecting this to diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, and red bell peppers are all high in vitamin C and can help you fight free radicals.

Cooking Oils

Unsaturated fats, specifically linoleic acid, were linked to an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration in a seminal study conducted 30 years ago. It’s present in these oils for use in the kitchen:

Corn Safflower Sunflowers

Cooking oils that have less than 4 grammes of saturated fat per tablespoon are recommended by health professionals. Avoid items that contain trans fats or hydrogenated oils.

Margarine

Vegetable oils are used in its production, making it a source of unsaturated “good” fats. It could be healthier than butter, after all. Some brands of margarine, however, include trans fat, which is linked to increased cholesterol levels, an increased risk of heart disease, and even vision difficulties. The trans fat content increases as margarine solidifies. Try the spreadable or liquid variety instead of the stick. You can also read labels to find products that have zero grammes of trans fat.

Ready-to-Eat Foods

Soups, tomato sauces, and other canned or prepackaged foods can contain as much as 75% of the daily recommended sodium intake. Reduce your risk of high blood pressure and its associated vision problems by cutting back on these foods. Try to find “low sodium” or “no salt added” alternatives to the items you normally buy. You may easily improve the flavour by adding your own spices and herbs.

Raw Red Peppers

Bell peppers are the highest calorie-for-calorie vitamin C food source. This is beneficial for the eye’s vascular system and may reduce the likelihood of developing cataracts. Bok choy, cauliflower, papayas, and strawberries are just a few of the many vegetables and fruits that contain it. Vitamin C is destroyed by cooking, thus raw foods are best. Vitamins A and E, found in abundance in peppers of all hues, are good for the eyes.

Sunflower Seeds and Nuts

Half of the daily value for vitamin E that the USDA advises for adults can be found in only one ounce of these seeds or almonds. The progression of AMD can be slowed by taking vitamin E and other minerals, according to a comprehensive study. Furthermore, it has the potential to protect against cataracts. Vitamin E can also be found in abundance in hazelnuts, peanuts (which are technically legumes), and peanut butter.

Dark, Leafy Greens

Vitamin C and E are found in abundance in dark green vegetables like kale, spinach, and collard greens. The carotenoid antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin are also present. These vitamin A plant sources can prevent age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. Most Westerners don’t consume nearly enough of these foods.

Salmon

DHA and EPA are two forms of omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for healthy retinal function. Both are common in seafood, especially fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and trout. The use of omega-3s appears to prevent age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma. Dry eyes have been linked to low levels of these fatty acids.

Sweet Potatoes

The beta-carotene in foods including sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, mangos, and apricots aids in night vision by enhancing the eyes’ sensitivity to low light. More than half of your daily vitamin C and E requirements can be met by eating just one sweet potato.

Lean Meat and Poultry

Vitamin A is transported from the liver to the retina by zinc, where it is needed to produce the pigment melanin. The highest zinc content per serving is found in oysters, but you don’t have to eat a lot of seafood to have adequate zinc in your diet: Good sources include pig, beef, and chicken (both dark and white meat).

Beans and Legumes

Want to preserve your night vision and delay the onset of AMD with a vegetarian, low-fat, high-fiber option? In addition to black-eyed peas, kidney beans, and lentils, chickpeas are also a good source of zinc. You can also use a can of baked beans.

Eggs

It’s a fantastic value: The egg’s zinc content will facilitate the utilisation of the yolk’s lutein and zeaxanthin. These chemicals, with their yellow-orange hue, protect the retina from potentially damaging blue light. The macula, which is responsible for central vision, receives an increase in its protective pigment thanks to these.

Squash

Lutein and zeaxanthin are two antioxidants your body doesn’t produce, but you can get them in squash year-round. Vitamin C and zinc can be found in summer squash as well. Vitamins A and C, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, can be obtained from the winter variety.

Broccoli and Brussels Sprouts

Vitamin A (in the forms of lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene), vitamin C, and vitamin E are all present in these related vegetables. All of these substances are antioxidants that shield the cells of your eyes from the damaging effects of free radicals. Your eyes, specifically the retinas, are at risk.

Over the past few weeks, there has been an increase in the number of conjunctivitis and eye flu patients in Delhi and the surrounding areas due to severe rainfall. Although this occurs every year, according to doctors from all throughout the city, this year’s extraordinary showers, flooding, and increased atmospheric moisture have made things worse.

Cases have increased by roughly 50% to 60%, according to Dr. Soveeta Rath, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Strabismus and Neuro Ophthalmology at Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, Daryaganj. “Children have been the most affected. Every third youngster develops conjunctivitis or red eyes. Thirty kids with conjunctivitis were seen in the OPD last week, she claims.

How does conjunctivitis spread? What is it?

The protective membrane that covers the white area of the eyeball, the conjunctiva, can become inflamed or irritated, a condition known as conjunctivitis. It is extremely contagious and is often referred to as pink eye. It is typically brought on by a viral or bacterial illness. It might accompany colds or respiratory infection symptoms like a sore throat. The use of improperly cleaned or borrowed contact lenses might result in bacterial conjunctivitis.

When you touch your eye after contacting contaminated materials, it spreads through direct contact. Therefore, while you have conjunctivitis, it’s best to avoid sharing towels or other personal belongings. If you have come into contact with another patient’s eye secretions, you could become infected.

A watery discharge during the day and a sticky discharge in the morning are the hallmarks of viral conjunctivitis. The eyelids could swell up significantly. Viral conjunctivitis typically clears up on its own in a week or two. Apply a warm compress to the eyes to treat viral infections. Additionally, lubricating eye drops or artificial tears might help soothe dryness and discomfort.

Bacterial conjunctivitis: Throughout the day, this typically results in a yellow or green, gooey discharge. The eyelids might swell, and the eyes will probably feel scratchy. Antibiotic eye drops or ointments are frequently used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis in order to help the infection clear up.

Conjunctivitis allergica: This condition, which affects both eyes, is brought on by an allergen like pollen. Your eyes’ mucous membrane releases inflammatory chemicals like histamines as a result. Red eyes are caused by this, however it is not contagious.

Conjunctivitis symptoms include what?

Common symptoms include discomfort, redness, hazy vision, persistent watering of the eyes, stickiness of the lids, fluid discharge, and crusting. While it frequently goes away on its own, according to Dr. Rath, symptomatic therapy is given to stop the infection from spreading.

Who is more susceptible to getting the infection?

Conjunctivitis can strike people of any age, according to Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals’ Medical Director and Co-Founder Dr. Kamal B Kapur. However, because they frequently cluster together in groups at work and school and make close physical contact with one another, it is more common in children and young people. Adults who wear contact lenses and are exposed to contaminated, allergic irritants are most at risk for developing conjunctivitis. “The rapid spread is the reason that the numbers of the infected have almost doubled this year,” he claims.

What should those who wear contacts do?

According to Dr. Kapur, they must be carefully cleaned each day. They are capable of inflicting bacterial conjunctivitis if improperly cleansed. Additionally, it is advisable to completely stop using such lenses if you have the infection until your ophthalmologist has examined you and given you the all-clear. Contact lens use over sick eyes is known to result in corneal ulcers and even the possibility of blindness.

How about preventive actions?

The consultant ophthalmologist at Fortis Hospital in Noida, Dr. Neetu Sharma, advises routine hand washing and avoiding touching your face or eyes. “Maintain cleanliness. If you know someone who has the virus, avoid using their products, especially eye makeup. Maintain a balanced, healthy diet and strengthen your immunity. Diabetes patients should be especially cautious because infections can produce more severe symptoms and take longer to heal.

How can conjunctivitis be treated?

The main focus of treatment is symptomatic alleviation. Cold compresses (for bacterial infections) and artificial tears can be bought over-the-counter without a prescription to assist ease some of the inflammation and dryness brought on by conjunctivitis. However, Dr. Sharma advises against using over-the-counter medications since they can do more harm than good. In addition, she advises against using steroid eye drops unless a doctor has recommended them.
