Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova will face off in the women’s final at Wimbledon on Saturday, sparing the All England from a potentially embarrassing diplomatic issue.

Sixth-ranked Tunisian Jabeur overcame deficits of a set and 4-2 to defeat Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-3 and advance to her second consecutive tournament final.

Left-handed Czech Vondrousova defeated Elina Svitolina with a 6-3, 6-3 victory, becoming the first unseeded woman in 60 years to reach the final.

Sabalenka would have received the trophy from Princess Catherine, the wife of the heir to the British throne, had she won the title on Saturday, a year after all Belarusian and Russian competitors were banned from the tournament due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia’s main ally is Belarus.

If Svitolina had reached the final, she would have continued her policy of refusing to shake hands with Russian and Belarusian opponents in protest of the conflict.

At this year’s tournament, Tunisian trailblazer Jabeur has rallied back three times after dropping the opening set.

She said, “I’m very proud of myself because perhaps the old me would have lost the match today and gone home, but I’m glad I dug deep and found the strength.”

After losing to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon and Iga Swiatek at the US Open last year, she will compete in her third Grand Slam final this Saturday.

Sabalenka, 25, who was competing in her fourth consecutive Grand Slam semifinal and sixth overall, overcame a 2/4 deficit in the tiebreak to win the first set.

She also served the quickest women’s serve at Wimbledon this year, clocking in at 121 miles per hour (194.7 kilometres per hour).

Sabalenka, who had vanquished Jabeur en route to the Wimbledon semifinals in 2021, broke for a 3-2 advantage in the second set.

This deficit grew to 4-2 before Jabeur battled back to win the next four games and tie the match.

Sabalenka’s resolve waned, and she was broken in the sixth game of the deciding set before Jabeur won the match with a fifth ace on match point.

– ‘Lot of responsibility’ –

Sabalenka hit 39 winners but committed 45 unforced errors as her dreams of adding the Wimbledon title to her Australian Open victory and surpassing Swiatek as the world’s top-ranked player were dashed.

“I had so many opportunities but did not take advantage of them. She performed better in crucial instances, according to the Belarusian.

After reaching the 2019 French Open runner-up position, world number 42 Vondrousova will compete in her second Grand Slam final.

The 24-year-old was rewarded for her aggressive play on Thursday, breaking serve six times and striking 22 winners compared to Svitolina’s nine.

“I find it unbelievable. I am ecstatic to have reached the final. “Elina is an incredible fighter and person,” said the Czech. “I was extremely anxious.”

The Czech’s journey to the final has been difficult; she underwent a second wrist operation last year, which will keep her out of action for a significant portion of 2022.

The 76th-ranked Svitolina, who just returned from maternity leave in April, had three service errors in the opening set.

She retrieved the first to even the score at 3-3, but the Czech broke in the seventh and ninth games to take the lead.

An error-plagued Svitolina fell behind 4-0 in the second set.

However, Vondrousova, who had defeated four seeded players to reach the semifinals, suddenly experienced mid-set jitters, returning the breaks to enable Svitolina to close to 3-4.

Svitolina then reversed all her hard work by being broken again in the eighth game, before allowing her opponent to advance to the final by pushing a forehand long.

Svitolina stated that representing war-torn Ukraine was a significant motivator, but added, “It’s a lot of responsibility, a lot of tension.”

“I attempt to strike an equilibrium as best I can. However, occasionally it may be too much.”

Billie Jean King Cup 2023:Wednesday in Tashkent, Ankita Raina led India to a 3-0 victory over hosts Uzbekistan in their second match of the Asia/Oceania Group I of the Billie Jean King Cup 2023.

This victory has propelled India to the summit of Group 1 alongside Japan with three matches remaining.

India defeated Thailand 2-1 on Tuesday, with Ankita’s singles and doubles performances standing out.

India will take on China on Thursday, followed by matches against South Korea and Japan.

In the inaugural match against Uzbekistan, Rutuja Bhosale represented the Indian side. She faced 16-year-old Sabrina Olimjanova, whom she defeated 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 on an outdoor hard court despite falling behind a set.

In the second match, Ankita, India’s top-ranked female tennis player according to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, defeated world number 991 Sevil Yuldasheva 6-4, 6-2. Sevil was Uzbekistan’s highest-ranked competitor for this match, as Nigina Abduraimova, ranked 186th, was absent.

Before the eighth game of the first set, both competitors had broken the serves of their respective opponents twice, bringing the score to 4-4. Ankita broke serve for the third time in the ninth game and grabbed a 1-0 lead despite wasting six of nine breakpoint opportunities in the opening set.

After taking a 4-0 lead in the second set, the Indian never looked back and closed out the match in 1 hour and 19 minutes.

In the doubles match, the youthful Indian duo of Sahaja Yamlapalli and Vaidehi Chaudhari helped India sweep their opponents by defeating Ominahon Valihanova and Maftunabonu Kahramonova, 6-1, 6-0.

Rafael Nadal’s preparation for a shot at a record-setting 15th French Open title was dealt a setback when he withdrew from the impending Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday. The 36-year-old Spaniard tweeted, “Hello everyone, I am not yet ready to compete at the highest level.” I will be unable to participate in Monte Carlo, one of the most significant tournaments of my career.

The tournament in Monte Carlo, which Nadal has won eleven times, commences on Saturday, whereas the French Open begins on May 28.

Nadal stated that he hoped to recover shortly from the hip flexor injury he sustained in January at the Australian Open, where he was eliminated in the second round by Mackenzie McDonald.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion withdrew from the Indian Wells and Miami hard-court tournaments in anticipation of a return at the start of the clay court season.

Between 2005 and 2012, record-setting Monte Carlo Masters champion Nadal won the tournament eight times in a row.

After the tournament director stated that Nadal had enrolled for this year’s event, the Spaniard denied participation last week.

“I don’t know where this information comes from, but if it were true, I would confirm it,” Nadal said at an event. “Unfortunately, I cannot confirm it.”

Sunday, Olympic medalist and Indian shuttler PV Sindhu lost her final women’s singles match at the ongoing Madrid Spain Masters to Indonesia’s Mariska Tunjung.

According to Olympics.com, she lost the match in two sets, 8-21 and 8-21.

Sindhu, who was seeded second and ranked eleventh in the BWF World Rankings, made her first final appearance of the year after failing to advance past the second round in the tournaments she had previously played. Saturday, Sindhu advanced to the final of the women’s singles competition by defeating Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min.

In her semifinal match, Sindhu prevailed by scores of 24-22, 22-20.

She faced Tunjung, ranked 12th in the world, who had defeated Carolina Marin, a former Olympic champion and top seed.

Sindhu got off to a sluggish start and committed some unforced errors, which gave her opponent the upper hand. The Indonesian easily claimed the first game by taking advantage of Sindhu’s errors.

Sindhu could do little to halt her opponent in the second game, as Tunjung easily won the second game and the match in straight games in just 28 minutes. She won her first BWF World Tout competition.

Participants from five states will compete in singles and doubles matches at the Indore Tennis Club in the New Palasia neighborhood.

Anil Dhupar, secretary of the All India Tennis Association (AITA), stated, “For the first time in the country, the National Wheelchair Tennis Tournament is being held in Indore. The tournament features participants from the provinces of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Twenty-four men and four women are competing in the tournament.”

Dhupar expressed regret that the budget of Madhya Pradesh did not include any funds for wheelchair athletics.

Nalini, a female tennis competitor from Bangalore, stated, “The percentage of women participating in wheelchair sports is extremely low. The women and their families must reveal themselves. We must abandon the notion that we are limited.”

“Although it is extremely difficult for women to acquire and play any sport, people look pitiful, but it is possible if one is determined. Only with the help of my family have I been able to reach this point,” Nalini explained.

The 27-year-old world number eight, who won in Rotterdam seven days prior, defeated his 35-year-old opponent in Doha after the latter fought four three-set battles and survived eight match points.
Murray’s first serve was broken in each set by Medvedev, who remained unblemished in three matches against Murray. “A very difficult encounter; the wind was a bit stronger today, so it was difficult for both of us to find our cadence,” Medvedev said on court, while also complaining about the balls.

“Honestly, now that the tournament is over and I’ve triumphed, I believe that these balls are not suitable for hard courts.

“They altered something this year, and I dislike it. According to what I’ve heard, many other players are experiencing shoulder, elbow, and wrist pain.

“In Australia, I had forearm problems. I believe I struggled all week to find the ideal cadence with these balls, but I am pleased to have won.”

According to Medevedev, both athletes experienced “poor” periods during the match. Five aces were launched by the Russian, but he also committed five double faults. After errors, Murray continually yelled at himself and his support team.

Until he was serving with a 3-2 lead and two game points, it appeared that Medvedev would easily win the second set. Murray fought back and won the match with a superb backhand to even the score at 3-3.

At 4-4, Murray was dominating 40-0 in an attempt to pull off another upset, but the Scot allowed Medvedev back into the match for the decisive break that determined the champion.

“Daniil is one of my favourite players to watch and one of the greatest on tour,” Murray said, recognising that he had experienced a “incredible week.”

Murray saved three match points in the first round and five against Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic in the semifinals.

HUA HIN, Thailand Lin Zhu of China won her first professional championship on Sunday after claiming victory against Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in the final of the Thailand Open. The score of the match was 6-4, 6-4.

Lin Zhu eventually prevailed against her dogged opponent after a match that lasted one hour and 45 minutes and included back-and-forth baseline rallies that left both players on the edge of their seats.

The Chinese player, who is 29 years old, was able to get a break to move ahead 5-3 in the first set. Lin Zhu won the first set in 46 minutes despite the fact that she was broken to love in the following game. She returned the favour by breaking the opponent to love in the very next game.

Zhu ultimately secured her first match point at 5-3 as the pair continued to swap breaks throughout the second. She smacked the shot wide to miss the opportunity, but she converted on her third opportunity in the 10th game with a backhand winner to take the match.

“I can’t express how ecstatic I am to have finally won my first tour title. The fruit of all of the labour was finally obtained, “Zhu, who is now rated No. 54 and will break into the top 50 in the new WTA rankings when they are updated on Monday, said.

Zhu has gotten off to a terrific start to the season, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals in Auckland and the last 16 at the Australian Open.
