Arun made her acting debut in the 1983 film Mandi, directed by Shyam Benegal and widely regarded as one of the best Hindi films ever made. “There are a lot of talented people in this world, but not everyone gets recognized for their efforts. Given the abundance of established musicians and performers in Mumbai, it is difficult to develop a name for oneself there. I never had any trouble getting through the doors. My greatest accomplishment is that I have never been seen groveling or pleading for job in front of other people. I have never put together a portfolio. I never approached somebody and said, “I want to sing or act,” and I don’t know why. Everything transpired in a slow and steady manner.”Prior to beginning a career in film, she studied acting for a period of six months at Delhi’s National School of Drama (NSD) in the 1970s. At the time, theatre legend Ebrahim Alkazi was serving as the school’s director.
