The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) fined Air India 10 lakh on Tuesday for breaking the civil aviation rules.

The aviation regulator said in a statement that it had issued CAR Section 3, Series M Part IV, titled “Facilities to be provided to passengers by airlines due to denied boarding, cancellation of flights, and delays in flights” in 2010. These rules were reviewed from time to time to make sure that air travelers were properly protected in the event of flight disruptions, especially denied boarding, flight cancellations, and delays.

This is why:" width="403" height="157" />

The DGCA said that since May 2023, it has been inspecting scheduled domestic airlines at a number of big airports on a regular basis. “When the airlines were being inspected, it was seen that Air India was not following the rules of the relevant CAR.” “As a result, a show cause notice has been sent to Air India asking them to explain why they are not following the rules of the CAR,” the DGCA statement that ANI read said.

“It may be recalled that similar inspections were conducted at major airports earlier this year as well, and Air India was fined ₹10,000,000 for not following the rules in the CAR regarding denied boarding of passengers,” the DGCA statement said.

Air India will send a replacement aircraft to transport 216 passengers and 16 crew members detained in Magadan, Russia, after their Delhi-San Francisco flight was forced to land due to a problem with one of its engines, the airline said.

Air India said in a statement released this morning that the replacement flight will depart from Mumbai’subject to necessary regulatory clearances’ on Wednesday afternoon and will transport food and other essentials for passengers.

Air India also stated that due to limited infrastructure at and around the airport in Magadan, which is on Russia’s eastern coast and over 10,000 km from Moscow’s capital, stranded passengers were moved to’makeshift accommodations after making sincere attempts to accommodate passengers in hotels locally…’

Due to the absence of Air India personnel in the remote town of Magadan or in Russia, all ground support provided to passengers in this unusual circumstance is of the highest quality imaginable. Air India said. The airline also stated that it is collaborating with the Consulate General of India in Vladivostok (approximately 4,900 kilometers from Magadan), the Russian authorities, and local officials.

According to the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia, the aircraft will land early Thursday morning.

What did the Indian government say?

The minister of civil aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia, is closely monitoring the situation, the ministry said this morning, adding that it is in constant contact with the airline. The ministry also reported that AI informed them that some passengers were lodged in a school near the airport.

What happened to Air India flight AI173?

The aircraft was a wide-body Boeing 777 that was obliged to land in Magadan due to a problem with one of its engines. Currently, the aircraft is undergoing safety inspections.

The details of the engine’s ‘technical issue’ have not been disclosed.

What did the US government say?

The spokesman for the State Department, Vedant Patel, stated that there were undoubtedly American citizens on the flight, but he could not confirm the exact number.

It was a flight bound for the United States, so it is plausible that there are American citizens on board… He stated that we are continuing to monitor the situation.

What do passengers say?

Girvaan Kaahma, age 16, was traveling with his uncle and sibling on the flight. The Associated Press reports that they and other passengers are prohibited from exiting the hostel where they are staying.

In addition, they cannot use their credit cards to purchase items from vending machines or stores due to American sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Nipun Aggarwal, chief commercial and transformation officer Air India, stated that the airline has the option to purchase a further 370 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus, bringing its total order to 470 aircraft.

The current purchase of 470 aircraft is the largest ever placed by a single airline anywhere in the world, surpassing American Airlines’ 2011 order of 460 aircraft. The previous largest order by an Indian carrier was for 300 aircraft by IndiGo in 2019.

“The deal includes 470 firm aircraft, 370 options and buy rights to be acquired from Airbus and Boeing over the following ten years.” The solid order for Airbus includes 210 A-320/321 Neo/XLR and 40 A350-900/1000 aircraft. The Boeing order consists of 190 737-Max aircraft, 20 787s, and 10 777s. We have also contracted with CFM International (CFM), Rolls-Royce, and GE Aerospace for long-term maintenance of the engines,” Aggarwal added in a LinkedIn post.

A firm order is the quantity of aircraft that a buyer has committed to purchasing. Typically, solid orders are accompanied by options that permit the airline to purchase additional planes at an agreed-upon price and date in the future. Options, unlike solid orders, do not obligate the buyer.
Boeing said in its announcement of the twin orders on February 14 that Air India has the option to purchase an additional 70 aircraft in addition to the 220 that are part of the firm order. At the time, it was unclear whether an option existed in addition to the definitive contract for 250 Airbus aircraft.

“In addition to the 470 aircraft on firm order, Air India has obtained options and buy rights for a number of additional aircraft,” These offer us the option, but not the responsibility, to take additional aircraft at already-negotiated production slots and/or pricing so that we may quickly accommodate future growth and manage risk,” Air India CEO Campbell Wilson stated in an internal memo to employees.

The majority of Air India’s and Air India Express’ fleet of approximately 140 aircraft are narrowbody aircraft. Air India currently relies primarily on Airbus aircraft for domestic operations, while its widebody fleet is comprised of Boeing aircraft. Air India Express only utilises Boeing narrow-body aircraft.
Over 17 years ago, Erstwhile Indian Airlines and Air India’s made an order for 111 planes, which included single-aisle Airbus aircraft and twin-aisle Boeing planes. Eventually, the two government-owned airlines of the time united under the Air India brand.

Since Air India was returned to the Tata Group a little over a year ago, the new owners have been focused on improving the airline’s product offerings and preparing a significant expansion. A five-year plan, Vihaan.AI, was created with the goal of significantly expanding the airline’s network and fleet in order to put it on the “route to sustained development, profitability, and market leadership.”

The twin orders are crucial to this technique. Air India is also renovating its existing aircraft and attempting to return a few grounded aircraft to service. It is also leasing aircraft to increase its network until the freshly ordered aircraft are integrated into the fleet.

Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, remarked, “AI is on a large transformation journey across safety, customer service, technology, engineering, network, and human resources. In order to complete this shift, a modern, energy-efficient fleet is crucial. In its Vihaan.AI transformation programme, Air India aspires to provide a world-class proposition serving international travellers with an Indian heart, and this order is a significant step towards realising that ambition. The Airline’s fleet and in-flight service will be upgraded and its global reach will be greatly increased with the addition of these new planes. This order will not only accelerate the development of the Indian aviation ecosystem, but it will also create unprecedented opportunities for professionals working in the field of aviation in India. AI Announces Intent to Acquire Modern Aircraft The first of the new planes won’t join the fleet until late 2023, and the rest won’t arrive until sometime in 2025. In the meantime, Air India has begun receiving 11 leased B777 and 25 A320 planes, which will allow the company to rapidly expand its fleet and service area.

AI has already announced plans to upgrade the seats and in-flight entertainment systems on its widebody B787 and B777 aircraft, and the purchase of new aircraft with a brand new cabin interior will complement those efforts. At about the middle of 2024, the first of these upgraded planes will begin flying again.

Full-service Air India is part of the Air India group, which also includes AI Express and the soon-to-be-merged Air Asia India. Tata Sons, Air India’s parent company, recently announced plans to merge the two airlines into the full-service Vistara. Vistara is a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, and Tata Sons owns 51% of the venture. The Group would consist of one full-service airline, and one low-cost airline, Air India Express, in a steady state, pending regulatory approval.

As part of an effort to grow its fleet and business, Air India, which is owned by the Tata Group, has committed to purchasing 250 planes from Airbus, including 40 wide-body aircraft.Air India has not ordered any new planes in more than 17 years, making this the very first time they have done so. It is also the first order that the airline has placed since the Tata Group took ownership of the company.

N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, made the announcement on Tuesday that Air India had signed a letter of intent to purchase 250 aircraft from Airbus. It will consist of 210 narrow-body aircraft in addition to the 40 wide-body A350 jets.

Chandrasekaran stated that the wide-body planes will be utilised for ultra-long distance flights during a virtual event that was attended by a number of world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, amongst others.
The duration of a flight that is considered to be an ultra-long distance flight is often greater than or equal to sixteen hours.

Since the Tata Group took over the government’s loss-making Air India in January 2022, a variety of steps have been taken to bring the airline back from the brink of bankruptcy.

Air India, which was formerly owned by the Indian government, purchased brand new planes more than 17 years ago.The most recent order placed by the airline was for 111 planes, with 68 being purchased from Boeing and 43 being purchased from Airbus. The total value of this transaction was 10.8 billion US dollars. 2005 was the year that the order was placed.

On January 27, the Tata Group celebrated the one-year anniversary of its takeover of Air India by announcing that it had “finalised a historic order of new aircraft to propel future expansion.” Air India made this announcement at the same time.

The airline has put in place a roadmap under Vihaan.AI for transformation over the next five years and has taken a variety of measures, including committing USD 400 million to refurbish the interiors of its entire wide-body fleet of aircraft. This transformation will take place over the next five years.

Tata Announce Commercial Plane With the addition of Vistara and Air Asia India, Air India is poised to have the youngest fleet in the world within a few years.
With the airline projected to bring in well over a hundred planes, the agreement is estimated to be worth billions of dollars.
A variety of ultra-long-range jetliners like the Airbus A-350, large-capacity aircraft like the Boeing 777X, more variations of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and variants of the Airbus A-320 NEO series are all possible for the new fleet.
