The air quality index (AQI) in the nation’s capital reached 454 on Sunday, prompting the federal authorities to take any and all steps that are at their disposal in order to prevent the degree of air pollution from reaching any previously unreachable heights.

The average AQI was reported at 470 this morning, which is approximately 20 times higher than the level that is advised by the World Health Organization (WHO). The data that was collected in real time indicates that this was the case. According to data provided by aqi.in, the current air quality index has reached the 480-point threshold.

In the months leading up to the rabi crop season in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, there was an increase in the amount of paddy straw that was burned, which is said to be one of the causes of the terrible air quality in Delhi. On the other hand, according to the environment minister in Delhi, Gopal Rai, the burning of stubble is only a problem in the neighbouring states of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and not in the state of Punjab at all.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast no rainfall in the city, which could improve the AQI by forcing down air pollutants.

A high-level meeting has been called today by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal to take stock of the deteriorating AQI and the implementation of stage 4 under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).

The New Delhi-based Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) said a total of 4,160 farm fires have been recorded till Sunday, which is the highest so far for this season. Punjab alone has reported 3,230 incidents of stubble burning, which is the state’s highest in a day for this season.

Rai contended that Punjab, an AAP-ruled state, has recorded less stubble burning if compared with last year. He said the farm fires in the state do not have as much impact on the AQI as smoke from Haryana and UP does.

On Saturday, the air quality in the nation’s capital stayed in the “very poor” group. As of 4 pm, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said that the average air quality index (AQI) was 304.

Around noon, the AQI in the city was recorded at 301, which is higher than the 261 number from Friday.

With scores of 316 and 201, the AQI was good in the Delhi University area and poor in Pusa. In the area around IIT Delhi, the AQI was 276. On Saturday, Airport (T3) had an AQI of 293 and was in the “poor” category. Mathura Road in Delhi had an AQI of 165 and was in the “moderate” category.

At 4 p.m., the AQI in Noida was 286. This means that the air quality was “poor.” Gurugram, on the other hand, had an AQI of 252. The CBCB says that other towns, like Ghaziabad and Faridabad, also had an AQI of 291 and 272, respectively.

An Air Quality Index (AQI) between 0 and 50 is considered “good,” 51 to 100 is “satisfactory,” 101 to 200 is “moderate,” 201 to 300 is “poor,” 301 to 400 is “very poor,” and 401 to 500 is “severe.”

Here are the most important new information about smog in the nation’s capital.

1. To cut down on pollution, the New Delhi Municipal Council has hired eight anti-smog guns and put mechanical road sweepers to work. Satish Upadhyay, Vice Chairperson of NDMC, announced a full set of “Air Pollution Control” steps for 2023–2024. “We recognize the urgent need to prioritize environmental well-being as air pollution, a significant contributor to respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and cancer, demands our collective attention,” Upadhyay said to PTI.

2. Gopal Rai, the environment minister of Delhi, said that the number of stubble burning incidents in neighboring states so far is less than last year. He also said that farm fires should be less of a source of air pollution in the city generally. However, he warned that bad weather could cause air pollution to get worse in the next few days.

3. The Ministry of Earth Sciences’ System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research, which gave information on how smoke from farm fires added to Delhi’s air pollution, hasn’t been sending out reports, and people in charge don’t know why. The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology is responsible for running the website, and a representative there told PTI, “We don’t know why updates on the SAFAR portal have stopped.”

4. On Saturday, a number of groups in the city began a nine-day foot march called the “Yamuna Yatra” to bring the problem of pollution in the Yamuna river to the notice of the government and the people. Ravi Shankar Tiwari, leader of Yamuna Sansad, said that the march would end in Mathura on November 5 after going 180 km from Chhat Ghat near ITO here.

5. The Center’s Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi said that the city’s air quality dropped to “very poor” because the wind slowed down at night and the temperature dropped. It said that the air quality would stay very bad until the end of the month.

In yet another investigation, the air quality in Bengaluru was found to have deteriorated between 2021 and 2022. According to IQAir’s 2022 World Air Quality Report, the air quality in Bengaluru deteriorated by more than 8% in 2022.

In 2022, PM2.5 levels in Bengaluru were 31.5 g/m3, 8.6 percent higher than the 29 g/m3 measured in 2021. November was the month with the highest PM2.5 levels in the city, at 45.8 g/m3. From September to October, the PM2.5 levels in the city increased from 18.1 g/m3 to 36.9 g/m3, according to the report. After the winter effect and Deepawali celebrations, the air quality in the city began to deteriorate at this time.

From June to August, the air quality in Bengaluru was at its finest, with PM2.5 levels between 14 and 15 g/m3. During the first four and final three months of 2022, the city experienced highs between 37 and 46.

This follows a similar research conducted by the Centre for Science and the Environment (CSE), which analysed winter air pollution trends in five major Indian cities, including Bengaluru. According to the report, Bengaluru experienced the most rapid increase in PM2.5 levels and the worst winter pollution climax in the past four years.

The civic body of Bengaluru, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), allocated 450 crore in this year’s budget to regulate the city’s high AQI levels.

The BBMP has considered instituting new anti-pollution measures, including the construction of parks beneath flyovers and tech corridors. In addition to constructing fountains at 75 major intersections in Bengaluru, the municipal agency will transform the city into a green zone with shuttle service around metro stations, promotion of electric vehicles, and similar services.

However, the IT capital did not appear on the list of the world’s 50 most polluted cities; 70% of the listed cities were in India, and India was designated the eighth most polluted nation.

According to a report, India performed poorly on the air pollution index in 2022, despite moving up three spots from the previous year on the list of countries with the worst air quality. Chad, Iraq, Pakistan, Bahrain, and Bangladesh were the five most polluted nations in 2022, followed by India in eighth place, a decline of three spots from the previous year. IQAir, a Swiss corporation specialising in air quality technology, issued its annual report on global air quality.

The 5th Annual World Air Quality Report reveals alarming information about 2022’s most polluted nations, territories, and regions. (AP)

According to World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, the annual average PM2.5 level should be 5 g/m3 or less, but India’s annual average PM2.5 level in 2022 was 53.3 g/m3, more than 10 times the safe limit and only marginally lower than the average for 2021. Bhiwadi in Rajasthan was the most polluted city in India, with annual PM2.5 levels of 92.7 g/m3, and 60 percent of Indian cities included in the report had annual PM2.5 levels at least seven times higher than the WHO guideline.

Only six nations – Australia, Estonia, Finland, Grenada, Iceland, and New Zealand – met the WHO’s safe limit, while 90 percent of the 131 nations and regions analysed exceeded the yearly PM2.5 guideline value.Lahore, Pakistan, was the most polluted metropolitan area in 2022, a massive surge from 15th place in 2021.

The region of Central and South Asia was home to eight of the world’s ten most polluted cities. India and Pakistan have the poorest air quality in the Central and South Asia region, which includes Bangladesh, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, according to the report. In 2022, only nine communities in the region met WHO standards for annual PM2.5 concentrations.
