The third Test of the Ashes 2023 has been a riveting contest due to the rapid advancement of the game. On Day 2, England’s captain Ben Stokes played a magnificent counter-attacking innings of 80 (108 runs) to help his team score crucial runs batting with the tail. The English captain punished off-spinner Todd Murphy by hitting him with five sixes.

However, the off-spinner made a remarkable rescue by catching him at long-on, allowing Australia to gain a 26-run advantage in the first innings. Murphy disclosed that his commander, Pat Cummins, encouraged him to believe in himself throughout his battle with Stokes, as he discussed the conflict.

“It was simply a matter of being courageous, and Patty (Cummins) was simply reiterating, ‘Keep believing in yourself, friend; you’ll create an opportunity for us.’ Murphy was quoted by cricket.com.au as saying, “I probably cost myself a little bit with that dropped catch, but it’s always enjoyable to compete with a player of Stokes’ caliber.”

Notably, Stokes was given two lives during his innings after Mitchell Starc dropped the ball at deep mid-wicket. Murphy then missed a caught and bowled opportunity on the subsequent delivery.Murphy added that anything above 250 would be sufficient to strike England out and take a 3-0 lead for Australia in the fourth innings.

Todd Murphy is confident Australia will win 3-0

“As many as possible would be ideal. I believe that it is currently well-balanced. If we can amass a lead of 250 runs or more, I believe we will have an opportunity to take 10 wickets and, hopefully, go up 3-0,” he added.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is working on getting more pace for the second Ashes Test at Lord’s in London, which could be a significant boost for England. This comes after the English team lost the first Test at Edgbaston, giving archrivals Australia a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series.

In addition, the English fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad were unable to unsettle the opposing batting unit, which ultimately led to Australia’s dramatic two-wicket victory. Broad referred to the pitch as’soulless’ after the match, whereas Anderson referred to it as ‘kryptonite’ and added that he would be ‘done’ with the Ashes if comparable pitches were created.

However, according to Jamie Cox, the MCC’s assistant secretary for cricket and logistics, the pitch at the upcoming red ball match in London could aid the English pacers. He added that Lord’s groundsman Karl McDermott was attempting to increase the tempo of the second Test at Lord’s.

“The pitch will be comparable to the one used for the Ireland Test. It just passed through. It was not quick, but simple to score on. When the sun was out, it was a nice pitch to hit. Here, the common expression is “look up, not down.” Therefore, if the sky is clear, the game will speed up. If the weather is warm and sunny, batting will appear enjoyable,” Cox told ‘Code Sports’.

There is always something for bowlers there: Cox

In addition, Jamie Cox reiterated that the pitch will also respond to climatic conditions. Notably, the Lord’s course offers little assistance to spinners. However, Cox believes that spinners can play a role in the second Ashes Test if the weather remains sunny for the majority of the match.

Also See | Sunil Gavaskar predicted future Indian captains

“We desire a bit more velocity and momentum. Our greatest challenge here is constantly gaining tempo and carry. It’s simply not a surface that is quick and elastic. There is always something there for bowlers, given the overheads, slope, and other factors. Historiographically, it lacks much flourish. But four or five warm days will suffice,” he added.

The second Test is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 28, and England will be eager to advance and draw level in the crucial series.

During Day 4 of the ongoing first Test of the Ashes 2023, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen drew attention to the similar manner in which Marnus Labuschagne was dismissed by Stuart Broad. The top-ranked Test batsman in the world was dismissed by the veteran seamer in identical fashion in both innings, as he edged the ball to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

Broad had mentioned using his wobble seam and outswinger to counter the dynamic combination of Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the lead-up to the Ashes 2023, and so far it has served England well. While Labuschagne was dismissed for a duck in the first innings, the right-arm seamer was able to dismiss him again during Australia’s chase late on Day 4, keeping England’s aspirations alive heading into the final day.

While facing Stuart Broad, Kevin Pietersen advised Labuschagne not to attempt deliveries that are well outside the off-stump. In an interview with Sky Sports, he stated:

“Observe how far away the object is from Marnus. I believe there is a significant technical error there. He shouldn’t be toying at this point in the delivery; you must let it go. He is playing too far across his shafts and triggering excessively.”

At the conclusion of the third day of play under cloudy conditions, the Australian fast bowlers’ persistent spell left England floundering at 28-2. On the fourth day, Joe Root eliminated all doubts by playing a reverse sweep off Pat Cummins’ first delivery and scoring 16 runs off Scott Boland’s next over.

No batsman scored a half-century or more during England’s second innings, as Australia declared the innings over after the hosts scored 273 runs in 66.2 overs. In response, Australia concluded the day with a score of 107/3, advancing the Test to Day 5 with all outcomes still conceivable. The first Test will conclude on Tuesday, June 20, and the second game will be played at the historic Lord’s on Tuesday, June 28.

Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen, former England captains, criticized Ben Stokes for declaring on Day 1 of the opening Ashes 2023 Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Friday, June 16. England adhered to its ‘Bazball’ strategy, with Stokes declaring at 393/8 while Joe Root was batting on a hundred. Root’s unbroken 118 off 152 deliveries was his 30th century in the longest format.

Vaughan stated that he would not have declared if he were the captain, particularly with Root on the field. England are endeavoring to send a message that no other team has ever attempted, according to the 48-year-old. Moreover, he asserted that David Warner and Usman Khawaja, two experienced batters, were sprinting like children if England did not get the wicket, which is the essence of The Ashes.

“I would not have announced. You simply do not know what will occur. England are attempting to send a message that no other team has ever attempted. As captain, I would have desired a few more runs, particularly with Joe Root on the field. Even though England did not get the wicket, this is what the Ashes is all about: Warner and Khawaja, two experienced professionals, were sprinting like children, as Vaughan stated on BBC Test Match Special.

Pietersen, too, was critical of Stokes’ decision, alleging that it is not in keeping with his off-field leadership. The 42-year-old believes that the second day could be the most gorgeous. Adding that he was typically told 400 or 450 in the first inning, he conceded that he may be unduly critical.

“I do not believe that is the character of Stokes’ captaincy (in and out of the field). It is challenging to respond because we did not see much of it this evening. And I played with you guys in that Test match against India last year, when the wicket improved for batting, and I believe that tomorrow (Saturday) will be the most gorgeous day. Therefore, I am… I did not appreciate the statement,” Pietersen told Sky Sports.

“We will determine if it was the correct thing to do. In the first innings of a Test match, I was always told to score 400…or 400-450. It involves psychology. “Perhaps I am being too critical; we shall see,” he said.

Hussain and Bairstow describe Stokes’ decision as a “brave move.”

Former England captain Nasser Hussain and wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow supported Stokes’ declaration on Day 1. “England desired a shot at Warner at the conclusion of the day’s play. “Stokes made a reasonable decision,” Hussain said.

Also See | Rohit probably needs to just refresh: Graeme Smith

Bairstow, on the other hand, referred to the captain’s choice as a “bold call.” There will be discussions, according to the 33-year-old, but no one wants to go out there with 20 minutes and four overs when Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson are racing in at the end of the day. The wicketkeeper-batsman smashed a magnificent fifty, scoring 78 off 78 deliveries with 12 fours in the first innings on Day 1 while ably partnering with Joe Root.

“It was a courageous and wise decision. There will be conversations about it, but no one relishes going out there with 20 minutes and four overs when Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson are running in at the end of a long day,” Bairstow told Sky Sports at the end of the day.

Former Australia captain Steve Smith has signed a contract to play three games for Sussex in May, likely in preparation for the upcoming Ashes and World Test Championship final.

The much-anticipated transfer means that Smith will make his debuts for Worcestershire on May 4, Leicestershire the next week, and Glamorgan (and his countryman Marnus Labuschagne) at Hove the following week.
Although neither team has officially announced their participation, the World Test Championship final will be contested at the Oval in early June, and the Ashes will begin at Edgbaston on June 16.

England captain Ben Stokes was unenthusiastic about Smith’s participation in the County Championship back in December.
He opined that having players of Steve’s calibre interested in playing in the county game was “excellent for the county game.”
But I’m not sure.
You probably don’t want them to play any games out here before the Ashes because it’s one of those situations.

While some on social media were quick to describe Sussex as “traitors” for helping the Australian, Smith has been especially quick to highlight the good contribution the Australian can make to English cricket.
He “especially looks forward to working with the younger players in the group and hoping I can provide some assistance to them,” he stated.

While Smith has a legitimate claim to greatness as a player, he remains somewhat controversial due to his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal that the Australian Test team became entangled in during a tour of South Africa in 2018.
He has a batting average of 60.89 in 162 innings across 92 Tests and 50.95 in first-class cricket for New South Wales in Australia’s Sheffield Shield.
Only Don Bradman, who played for Australia 25 times, has more international caps than him.

He will play for Sussex opposite Indian No. 22 Cheteshwar Pujara in the upcoming Test series.
For a county that only made it to the second round of the County Championship last year thanks to the efforts of seven players, his signing is a huge win.

It’s fantastic for us and the County Championship to have arguably the world’s best hitter play for Sussex right before a highly anticipated Ashes Test series, as Rob Andrew, CEO of Sussex, put it.
Under the guidance of new head coach Paul Farbrace, we are hoping to be optimistic and ambitious after several years of subpar Championship form.
