Winners of records CSK paid an amazing INR 16.25 crore for Stokes’ skills at the IPL 2023 auction. But the player CSK paid the most for in the IPL 2023 sale will not play for the Yellow Brigade next season. Stokes has said he won’t be able to play in the IPL in 2024 because he wants to focus on making money. The England all-rounder wants to make sure he has enough time to rest and train for England’s big games. In 2024, England will play India in a very important Test match.

Disastrous World Cup in India

After a terrible defense of their ODI World Cup title in India, England will be hoping to do better next year when they try to protect their ICC World T20 title. Stokes came out of retirement for the ODI World Cup, but he failed to excite England like he did at the 2019 ICC event. In the round robin portion of the India World Cup, the Stokes-led team finished in seventh place. England only won three games in India. The team that won the 2023 World Cup the year before lost six times in the league phase.

How Stokes performed in IPL 2023

Stokes entered the IPL 2023 auction at a base price of INR 2 crore. The Englishman surpassed pacer Deepak Chahar to become CSK’s most expensive player in the history of IPL. Stokes played only two matches in the IPL 2023 due to a knee injury. Stokes is expected to undergo knee surgery as the Englishman is hoping to regain fitness for England’s five-match Test series against India in January.

Vaughan stated that he would not have declared if he were the captain, particularly with Root on the field. England are endeavoring to send a message that no other team has ever attempted, according to the 48-year-old. Moreover, he asserted that David Warner and Usman Khawaja, two experienced batters, were sprinting like children if England did not get the wicket, which is the essence of The Ashes.

“I would not have announced. You simply do not know what will occur. England are attempting to send a message that no other team has ever attempted. As captain, I would have desired a few more runs, particularly with Joe Root on the field. Even though England did not get the wicket, this is what the Ashes is all about: Warner and Khawaja, two experienced professionals, were sprinting like children, as Vaughan stated on BBC Test Match Special.

Pietersen, too, was critical of Stokes’ decision, alleging that it is not in keeping with his off-field leadership. The 42-year-old believes that the second day could be the most gorgeous. Adding that he was typically told 400 or 450 in the first inning, he conceded that he may be unduly critical.

“I do not believe that is the character of Stokes’ captaincy (in and out of the field). It is challenging to respond because we did not see much of it this evening. And I played with you guys in that Test match against India last year, when the wicket improved for batting, and I believe that tomorrow (Saturday) will be the most gorgeous day. Therefore, I am… I did not appreciate the statement,” Pietersen told Sky Sports.

“We will determine if it was the correct thing to do. In the first innings of a Test match, I was always told to score 400…or 400-450. It involves psychology. “Perhaps I am being too critical; we shall see,” he said.

Hussain and Bairstow describe Stokes’ decision as a “brave move.”

Former England captain Nasser Hussain and wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow supported Stokes’ declaration on Day 1. “England desired a shot at Warner at the conclusion of the day’s play. “Stokes made a reasonable decision,” Hussain said.

Bairstow, on the other hand, referred to the captain’s choice as a “bold call.” There will be discussions, according to the 33-year-old, but no one wants to go out there with 20 minutes and four overs when Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson are racing in at the end of the day. The wicketkeeper-batsman smashed a magnificent fifty, scoring 78 off 78 deliveries with 12 fours in the first innings on Day 1 while ably partnering with Joe Root.

“It was a courageous and wise decision. There will be conversations about it, but no one relishes going out there with 20 minutes and four overs when Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson are running in at the end of a long day,” Bairstow told Sky Sports at the end of the day.

England will play a lengthy summer of Test cricket, including a single match against Ireland and a five-match Ashes series against Australia. The England captain, speaking prior to the Ashes 2023, credited T20 cricket with attracting new players and admirers to the sport.

“I believe T20 and Test cricket can continue to be successful and advance simultaneously. The West Australian quoted Stokes as saying, “Look at what T20 has done for the game in general, the amount of attraction it’s brought – new fans, new players it’s brought into playing cricket regardless of format, and also what T20 has been able to bring to Test cricket.”

The transition between the two games, according to Stokes, is entirely different, but T20 has helped players adopt an aggressive approach in Tests as well. “The transition between the two games is so dissimilar, but there are times in Test matches when a T20 team appears, simply because the players have been playing it.” Therefore, I do not foresee a future in which T20 and Tests are not played.”

Ashes will be Bazball’s most challenging test.

Notably, England’s captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum have the team playing an aggressive brand of Test cricket. Under Stokes’ stewardship, England has won ten of twelve Tests and has dominated the format by scoring at an exceptional run rate.

During the first Test of the three-match series against Pakistan in December, England scored at a rate of 5.50 runs per over to post 506/4 on the first day in Rawalpindi, a record for the most runs scored on the first day of a Test. The forthcoming Ashes will be England’s greatest test of its Bazball strategy. Since 2017, England has not won the Ashes, and the forthcoming series will be their best opportunity to reclaim the urn.

After another unsuccessful season, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) have, as they do every year, cut ties with many of its players and hired new coaches.
They did not re-sign Mayank Agarwal, their former skipper and opener, from the December 23 auction in Kochi.

For INR 18.50 crore, PBKS signed up the promising all-rounder Sam Curran, making him the most expensive player ever purchased in the IPL.
The organisation, though, could have opted for any number of other players who might have proven to be steal buys and improved the team’s overall performance.

Spending so much money on Curran was puzzling because the franchise already had promising fast bowlers like Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada and some gun batsmen like Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone, among others.
They have plenty of room for development heading into the following Indian Premier League season.

The following are three players that PBKS might have selected in place of Sam Curran:-

1. Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes is a more well-rounded all-rounder than Sam Curran is at this point in his career.
In addition to being a dependable batsman in the middle order, he has a flair for taking wickets by bowling accurate lines and lengths at a fast tempo.
In addition to his other skill sets, he possesses outstanding fielding talents.

Stokes would have also come at a big price, but at the same time, the value that he can give to a team is considerably greater than what Sam Curran might potentially offer. Therefore, it would have been wiser to pursue Stokes rather than Sam Curran.
It hasn’t been possible for Curran to demonstrate his quality in the SA20.
While doing so, Stokes has led his country to victory in two World Cups played with white balls and demonstrated his ability to perform well even when the stakes are high.

The fact that the Christchurch native has a wealth of experience playing in the Indian Premier League is another reason why he is a more well-rounded choice than Curran.
In his past roles with Rajasthan Royals and Rising Pune Supergiants, he repeatedly displayed the high level of play expected of him in professional sports.
In the sport of cricket, he is one of the select few players who possesses the potential to pull victories out of the jaws of loss.

2. Mayank Agarwal

We have seen throughout the course of the 15 seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL) how much having a strong core of players from India proves to be beneficial over the course of a season that is somewhat long.
IPL champion teams have always featured a strong representation of Indian players throughout the tournament’s history. This has proven to be quite important, especially considering that each team is required to have at least seven players with Indian ancestry.

When one considers the roster of the Punjab Kings, the only major Indian players are Shikhar Dhawan, Arshdeep Singh, and, to a certain extent, Rahul Chahar.
Aside from that, though, their team has a very limited amount of experience in playing games with an Indian flavour.

They had the option of going back to their old captain, Mayank Agarwal, who would have brought the lineup the much-required experience. However, they decided not to do so.
He played for Punjab and had a solid season overall, although he did not fulfil his potential as a top-order batsman for the team.

They probably passed up an opportunity by not getting him back at a lower price. If they had him in the lineup, they could have taken out one of the batters who were imported from overseas.

If they had invested part of the money they received from the sale of Sam Curran on Agarwal, they would have been in a position to buy either an additional high-caliber spinner or a speed demon fast bowler.
They could have chosen the Karnataka batter and saved themselves half of the money they spent on Curran.
Despite this, the opener is scheduled to make an appearance for the Sunrisers Hyderabad during this season.

3. Adam Zampa

At this year’s IPL auction, Rajasthan Royals paid INR 1.5 crore for Adam Zampa.
He would have been a great addition to Punjab Kings’ team.

The Punjab Kings only have one main spinner, which is not a good thing because Chennai and Delhi have fast wickets that require two spinners most of the time.
Punjab would have benefited a lot from Zampa’s experience, and he could have played ahead of Rahul Chahar as the best spinner.

Zampa has been very good at T20 cricket, both for his team and for the rest of the world.
In the current Big Bash league, he has done well. He has taken 13 wickets in 13 games, with an economy rate of 7.21, and he is also leading his team.

His wicket-taking skills and the ability to choose the right variation for opponents are two of the most important things he brings.
Punjab could have put together a great team for the next game if they had a spin bowler like Zampa in their lineup.
