It is the ability to channel both into creating products and/or services that customers are willing to pay for that creates jobs. The magical linkage between the two is the ‘market connection’, the engine that drives the economy.

In the last two decades, creative use of technology has generated these market connections in a way no one could have possibly imagined. Economic activity, like traffic on a busy highway, faces bottlenecks that create gridlocks and needs the right triggers to unlock these bottlenecks.

For decades, such bottlenecks had collectively gridlocked India into a ‘middle-income trap’. Getting out of this middle-income trap needed strategic breakthroughs in terms of both technology and policy.

In order for India to mature, the following two goals had to be met:

a) increasing income and consumption; and b) creating items and services that varied customer segments would value at prices that would provide a profit for the producers of these goods and services.

Both would compliment each other and hence were equally important.

In the last two decades, three factors came together that have the potential to help India break out of its middle-income trap: Aadhaar, cellphones, and broadband. While each was remarkable in its own right, the combination would be transformative. The most significant innovations to emerge from this convergence would be online platforms and payments.

The use of online platforms facilitated the finding and matching of demand and supply. Plumbers, for example, can no longer rely on word of mouth to get new customers. Prior to the development of platforms, inefficiencies in matching demand and supply forced consumers to accept subpar services offered by poorly skilled individuals.

While these platforms did not produce a new product or service, they ‘industrialised’ existing ones, and industrialisation enabled seamless consumption while also creating formal mechanisms to increase services and service capabilities. And herein lies the power of ‘debottlenecking’ a severe bottleneck.

This debottlenecking enabled free market forces to take over and establish systemic patterns and scale. By removing a single significant bottleneck, a virtuous cycle of ‘revenue growth’ for service providers is activated, which leads to ‘new consumption,’ which leads to the creation of more goods and service providers.

In a nutshell, these platforms reduced barriers to consumption and production, which is a necessary lubricant for the wheels of economic activity. They also reduced feedback cycles, which are potent triggers in a free market.

Another breakthrough that changed the course of India’s development was online payments. India benefited from the late mover advantage, which was aided by certain astute strategic decisions. This digital infrastructure is basically free and serves as a terrific accelerator of product innovation for tech-savvy entrepreneurs who are familiar with Middle India.

We are at the start of a major wave of innovation, which will primarily affect healthcare, food and agriculture, logistics, and financial services. Each mega-market is set to experience significant upheaval as old barriers to entry crumble, allowing new entrants in. A new generation of startup founders is combining entrepreneurial talents, technological capacity, deep customer insights, and developing new business models to overcome old barriers to reaching and serving hundreds of millions of Indians.

TThe COVID-19 crisis has expedited the digital momentum in the critical Middle India sectors of healthcare, food and agriculture, logistics, and financial services by three to five years. It has compelled irreversible consumer, commercial, and governmental transformations that would have lasted considerably longer and taken an unpredictable path. Regulatory changes that allow cross-state selling of agricultural produce, digital health processes such as video consultation at hospitals, and digital onboarding and streamlining of financial transactions are just a few of the behavioral and regulatory changes that have occurred in recent months.

Despite the best intentions and understanding, digital infrastructure has enabled innovators to construct enterprises that were previously unimaginable. I believe that founders who truly understand the newly emerging consumers from Middle India and can harness technology to provide low-cost solutions through efficient business models may build highly differentiated and scalable enterprises.

Middle India consumes in ‘Chotaa packs’ and purchases from reliable suppliers. A low cost of distribution is required for success in middle India. Chinni Krishnan, a farmer turned entrepreneur from Cuddalore, was the first to truly comprehend the mindset of the Indian consumer and began selling things like shampoo and talcum powder in small sachets. The concept was a big success. He was sure that sachets will be the future after watching people who had never used a product before experiment with it due of the cost of a small pack size. The term’sachet’ is a metaphor for’small pack size’ and a solution to the desires of individuals at the bottom and middle of the pyramid. Trust, cheap customer acquisition and distribution expenses, and a real product that fulfills a real need at an affordable price would be critical to success in middle India.

An observational study shows that there is no link between the Covid-19 vaccines used in India (Covishield and Covaxin) and a higher chance of heart attacks. The study focuses on how the shots protect people.

The study, which was just released in the journal PLOS One, looked at how the COVID-19 vaccine affected death rates after a heart attack or acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

The study looked back at information about 1,578 people who were admitted to the G B Pant hospital in Delhi between August 2021 and August 2022. As many as 1,086 people (68.8%) were protected against COVID-19, but 492 people (31.2% of the total) were not.

96% of the people who were vaccinated had gotten two doses of the vaccine, while 4% had only received one dose.

“Our research showed that India’s medicines are safe. In India, there was no link between getting a shot and having a heart attack. In fact, the study found that people who had been vaccinated were less likely to die after a heart attack. The study’s leader, Mohit Gupta from G B Pant Hospital, told PTI that this was the case.

Most of the side effects (AEs) of COVID-19 vaccines have been mild, temporary, and went away on their own. Concerns have been made, though, about the effects of these vaccines on the heart and blood vessels.

The authors pointed out that any side effect can have disastrous results, especially in countries with a lot of people, like India.

All of the patients who were registered had their vaccination status recorded, including the type of vaccine, the date of vaccination, and any side effects.

The researchers found that the study did not show a specific clustering of AMI at any particular time after vaccination. This suggests that there was no significant link between COVID-19 jabs and heart attacks.

At the 30-day follow-up, 201 (12.7%) of the patients died from all causes. The adjusted chances of death were much lower in the vaccinated group.

At six months of follow-up, the AMI group that had been vaccinated had a lower chance of dying than the AMI group that hadn’t been vaccinated.

The study found that when COVID-19 vaccines were given 30 days and six months after an AMI, deaths from all causes went down.

The researchers said that the chance of dying within 30 days was higher for people who were older, had diabetes, or smoked.

India records 3,095 fresh Covid cases: India reported 3,095 new cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, the highest daily increase in infections since 2023. The number of active cases is 15,208, as reported by the city health department.

In the last few days, the country has seen an increase in the number of new Covid cases alongside a steep rise in the number of H3N2 influenza cases. On Wednesday, 2,151 new cases of Covid-19 were reported. Currently, 0.03 percent of cases are active, while the recovery rate stands at 98.78 percent.

1,390 recoveries in the past twenty-four hours brought the total number of recoveries to 4,41,69,711 (over 4 crore). Two patients perished from the infection in Goa and Gujarat, respectively.

According to data shared by the city’s health department, Delhi recorded 295 new Covid cases with a positivity rate of 12.48 percent on Thursday. On Wednesday, the city recorded 300 cases for the first time since August 31, as well as two fatalities and a positivity rate of 13.89%.

Officials say that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will conduct a meeting today (Friday) to review the Covid-19 situation in the wake of an increase in cases in the nation’s capital. The Health Minister, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and other senior officials will attend the meeting.

In the meantime, Uttar Pradesh, which has seen an increase in Covid cases, has placed all frontline personnel and public and private hospitals in “alert mode.” The government of Yogi Adityanath has ordered that all affirmative samples be sent for genome sequencing.

Bharadwaj met with Health department officials on Thursday to assess the situation, after which he announced Kejriwal would conduct a review.According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the increase in influenza cases is caused by the Influenza A subtype H3N2 virus.

New XBB.1.16 Covid sub-variant: A new variant of Covid-19 is on the rise. Four of the five states that have detected XBB.1.16 over the past three weeks have reported an increase in the number of cases.Officials from the Ministry of Health have stated that there is no evidence of a rise in disease severity, hospitalization, or mortality.

XBB.1.16 is considered an interesting covid sub-variant due to its increased transmissibility, which enables it to displace other dominant variants. The variant was found in 204 patient samples in March, up from 138 in February and just two in January, according to data from India’s Covid-19 genome sequencing consortium, INSACOG.

Cases of the new variant have been reported from Pune, Mumbai, Thane, Sangli, Ahmednagar, Amravati, and Nandurbar. Of the total 344 XBB.1.16 sequences isolated to date, the maximum number (105) has been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Mumbai, Thane, Sangli, Ahmednagar, Amravati, and Nandurbar.

This was followed by 93 Telangana sequences, 57 Karnataka sequences, 54 Gujarat sequences, and 19 Delhi sequences. After XBB.1.16, XBB.1.5 and XBB.2.3 are the subvariants with the highest prevalence among patient samples, according to INSACOG data.

“As a pandemic infection typically approaches endemicity, the number of variants increases. Is Covid-19 now an epidemic? We are not stating that, but it is on its way,” said a senior Health Ministry official who requested anonymity.Eight states have reported an increase in Covid-19 cases: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra increased from 377 the week ending March 9 to 790 the week ending March 16 and to 1,650 the week ending March 23. During the same time period, the positivity rate — the proportion of samples that test positive — increased from 1.05 percent to 4.49 percent.

This positivity rate is significantly higher than the national average of 1% for the same week.In Gujarat, there were 115 cases during the week that ended on March 9, 346 during the week that ended on March 16, and 1,093 during the week that ended on March 23.During the same time frame, the positivity rate in the state increased from 0.32 percent to 2 percent.

The number of Covid-19 cases in Kerala increased from 445 the week ending March 9 to 601 the week ending March 16 and 979 the week ending March 23. The state’s positivity rate increased from 2.02 percent to 4.17 percent.

The number of reported cases in Karnataka rose from 539 the week ending March 9 to 603 the week ending March 6 and 692 the week ending March 23. The state’s rate of positivity rose from 2.33 percent to 3.08 percent.

Friday, the World Health Organization reported that the Covid-19 pandemic could reach a point this year where it poses a risk comparable to influenza. The WHO is optimistic that it will be able to declare an end to the emergency in 2023, as it is increasingly optimistic about the end of the pandemic phase of the virus.

Last weekend marked three years since the UN health agency first referred to the situation as a pandemic; however, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus insists countries should have acted several weeks earlier.Michael Ryan, WHO’s director of emergencies, told a press conference, “I think we’re approaching the point where we can look at Covid-19 in the same way as seasonal influenza.”

“A health hazard, a contagion that will continue to cause death. But a virus that does not disrupt our society or hospital systems, and I believe that will arrive this year, as Tedros predicted.”The WHO director-general stated that the world is in a significantly stronger position than at any point during the pandemic.”I am confident that we will be able to declare the end of Covid-19 as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) this year,” he said.

On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared a PHEIC, its highest level of alert, when, outside of China, fewer than 100 cases and no fatalities had been reported. But it wasn’t until March 11 of that year, when Tedros described the deteriorating situation as a pandemic, that many countries appeared to recognise the peril.

“We declared a global health emergency to motivate countries to take decisive action, but not all did,” he said on Friday.”Three years later, nearly seven million deaths have been attributed to Covid-19, although we know the actual number is much higher.”

He was delighted that for the first time in the past four weeks, the weekly number of reported deaths has been less than when he first described Covid-19 as a pandemic. However, he stated that more than 5,000 fatalities per week was excessive for a disease that can be prevented and treated.

Centre writes to 6 states amid increase in Covid-19 cases: Citing a possible localized spread of the virus, the Centre on Thursday asked six states — Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka — to implement a risk assessment-based approach to prevent and contain the increase in COVID-19 infections.

In a letter to these states, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan stated, “A few states have reported a higher number of cases, indicating the possibility of a localized spread of infection.”

Bhushan advised these states to investigate the situation with COVID-19 on a micro-level and maintain a focus on implementing the necessary measures for prompt and effective management of the disease, while also ensuring effective compliance with the Ministry of Health’s various advisories.Additionally | 4 Australian tourists test positive for Covid in Rajasthan; India reports 618 new infections and 5 fatalities

Instructing the states to maintain a vigilant vigil, he reported that the number of COVID-19 cases in India has declined significantly over the past few months.Nonetheless, a rise in cases has been observed in certain regions of the country over the past few weeks, with 2,082 cases reported in the week ending March 8 and 3,264 cases reported in the week ending March 15.

Bhushan wrote, “It is necessary to follow a risk assessment-based strategy to prevent and contain the infection without losing the progress made in the fight against the pandemic.”

He emphasized the importance of routinely monitoring new and emerging clusters of new COVID-19 cases, influenza-like illness (ILI), and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases in all health facilities or through specialized fever clinics to detect early warning signals of the spread of infection.

He also stressed on genomic sequencing for prescribed samples of international passengers, collection of samples from sentinel sites (identified health facilities), and local clusters of cases, proactive promotion to increase administration of precaution dose for all eligible beneficiaries and following Covid-appropriate behaviour particularly in enclosed spaces and in crowded spaces.

Bhushan stated, “It is imperative that the state maintain a vigilant vigilance and, if necessary, take preventative measures in any areas of concern to prevent the spread of new infections.”

By analysing samples from COVID-19 convalescent individuals, the researchers found that some had antibodies specific for the coldspots, the study said.#Coldspots #COVID19 pic.twitter.com/sylhvoTYjp

In the study, two PhD students at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Switzerland and affiliated with the Universit della Svizzera italiana looked at more than 10 million coronavirus sequences. They found that some parts of the virus spike, which is the part of the virus that helps it infect human cells, were remarkably stable.

One of the researchers, Virginia Crivelli, said, “We call these ‘coldspots.’ Most of the virus changes quickly, but we found 15 places where it doesn’t.”

The study said that when researchers looked at samples from people who had recovered from COVID-19, they found that some of them had antibodies that were only found in the coldspots.

The other researcher, Filippo Bianchini, said, “These antibodies are very rare, but thanks to a new method, we were able to find them.”

The study said that the antibodies stopped covid virus infection in the lab, even with the most recent versions of viruses that are a concern. They also stopped disease in preclinical models.

“It’s likely that new coronaviruses that can make people sick will appear. Davide Robbiani, the head of the IRB and the study’s senior author, said, “Our results suggest that it may already be possible to make countermeasures that are effective against both current and future coronaviruses.”

The first COVID-19 intranasal vaccination, iNCOVACC, was introduced today by Ministers of Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya. The vaccine, created by Indian company Bharat Biotech, will cost the government 325 per dosage while private hospitals will have to pay 800.

The primary 2-dose schedule and the heterologous booster dose were approved for the company in December 2022. Prior to that, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) had authorised the intranasal vaccine’s limited usage in emergency cases for people 18 years of age and older.

The vaccination must be administered in two doses separated by 28 days.

As per the head of the nation’s vaccine task force told last month, a week after the nasal vaccine was introduced on the CoWin platform, that people who have already received a precautionary or booster dose cannot receive the nasal vaccine.

Visit the CoWin website to schedule an appointment for the intranasal vaccine dose, according to the vaccine manufacturer Bharat Biotech.

In collaboration with Washington University in St. Louis, which created the recombinant adenoviral vectored construct and tested its efficacy in preclinical studies, iNCOVACC was created.

Bharat Biotech developed products involving preclinical safety assessment, large-scale manufacturing scale up, formulation and delivery device development, as well as human clinical trials.
