Viral cases rising: India is experiencing an increase in viral cases as a result of H3N2, Covid-19, and swine flu. While the majority of cases are due to H3N2, data indicates that swine flu and covid cases are also on the rise in the United States.

According to the government, approximately 79% of all influenza viruses isolated from patients with severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) or influenza-like illness are H3N2 (ILI). Influenza B Victoria (14%), a subtype of Influenza B, is the second most prevalent virus subtype, and Influenza A H1N1, also known as swine flu (7%), is the third most prevalent influenza virus subtype.

According to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), states have reported 955 cases of H1N1 as of February 28. The preponderance of H1N1 cases, also known as swine flu, have been reported in Tamil Nadu (545), Maharashtra (170), Gujarat (170), Kerala (42) and Punjab, according to the Union Health Ministry (28).

According to IDSP-IHIP (integrated health information platform) data, the number of reported cases of acute respiratory illness/influenza (ARI/ILI)-like illness increased from 3.97 million in January to 4.36 million in February. An official was quoted by the Times of India as saying that 1.33 lakh ARI/ILI cases were reported in the first nine days of March.

The health ministry verified last week that two people had died from H3N2 infection, a subtype of influenza. A virus known to induce seasonal influenza. Moreover, Covid cases are increasing in many regions of the nation, including Delhi, which reported a Covid positivity rate of 3.24 percent, with 13 of 401 samples testing positive.

In a letter to states and territories, Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan stated that operational guidelines for integrated surveillance of respiratory pathogens presenting with influenza-like illness or severe acute respiratory infection must be adhered to.

Bhushan also requested an assessment of the hospital’s preparedness, including the availability of medications and medical oxygen, as well as vaccination coverage against Covid-19 and influenza. Bhushan wrote, “While the Covid-19 trajectory has decreased markedly over the past few months, the gradual increase in Covid-19 test positivity rates in some states is a cause for concern that requires immediate attention.”

In the meantime, physicians advise people to wear masks due to the fact that swine flu, Influenza A subtype H3N2, and Covid-19 are transmitted primarily through virus droplets.

Beijing China has declared a “decisive victory” over Covid-19, calling it a “miracle” and saying that it has the lowest death rate in the world. However, there are still questions about how many people actually died from the infection, since the virus infected more than 80% of the country’s 1.4 billion people after restrictions were lifted in December.

State media said that China has moved from “victory” over the pandemic to “endemic,” or living with the virus, because of the announcement.

“At a meeting on Thursday, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) central committee said that China has won a major and decisive victory in preventing and controlling Covid-19 since November 2022,” the official news agency Xinhua quoted the meeting as saying.

President Xi Jinping led the meeting, and the top leaders of the country were there.

The report from Xinhua said, “China has made a miracle in human history by getting through a pandemic as a country with a lot of people.”

The ruling CPC ended the “zero-Covid” policy all of a sudden in December, getting rid of harsh lockdowns, mass tests, and tracing people’s contacts.

The three-pronged approach kept Covid-19 from spreading too much on the mainland, but the policies hurt the economy by slowing growth and lowering consumption, and the lockdowns made people angry.

By 2022, the “zero-Covid” policy was no longer possible because the Omicron variant was so easy to spread.

In November, people in many parts of China protested against the government’s strict anti-Covid policies. This was likely a big reason why the restrictions were lifted, even though it wasn’t mentioned in the official statement claiming “victory” over Covid-19.

The statement also didn’t say how many people had died because of the disease.

Official records show that just over 83,000 Covid-19 people died in China between December 8 and February 9.

Wu Zunyou, the head epidemiologist at China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said on China’s version of Twitter, Weibo, in January that it was unlikely that Covid-19 would make a big comeback in China in the next two or three months because 80% of people have already been infected.

In December, when China was in the middle of its worst Omicron-driven Covid-19 outbreak, the government said it would only count deaths from pneumonia or respiratory failure as part of the official Covid-19 death toll.

The change in definition made people doubt the official number of deaths even more.

Also read: India’s first frozen-lake marathon in Ladakh.

Thursday’s statement glossed over the fact that hospitals were full in December and that hundreds of millions of people have been stuck for weeks in lockdowns that have been in place since 2020.

“…China’s response to Covid-19 has gone smoothly in a short amount of time, with more than 200 million people getting medical care, nearly 800,000 severe cases getting the right care, and the country’s Covid-19 death rate remaining the lowest in the world,” the meeting said.

“After the infection waves in December and January, Chinese society is now back to normal and people have left the pandemic status, which is also what the public expected,” an unnamed expert from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention told the state-run tabloid Global Times.

The expert said, “It also means that we have started a process in which the disease will become a common respiratory infection that won’t get extra attention from the public and that people will take as normal.”

“It’s a sign that the disease is on its way to becoming widespread,” he said.

The meeting called for “continued efforts to strengthen the production and supply of medicines and medical materials, and to work hard to fix shortcomings at the primary level in terms of capacity, medicine supply, equipment, and other areas.”

Doctors are using this century-old vaccine

BCG has been recognised to cause an immune system state of general preparedness ever since it was first used to treat tuberculosis little over 100 years ago. Two new trials were added to the clinicaltrials.gov database in March 2020 as the UK was getting ready to fall into lockdown. The researchers suggested that Covid should be studied for its ability to defend against the old tuberculosis vaccine BCG.

Why did these researchers think BCG may have an impact on this radically different pathogen? Vaccines frequently trigger extremely precise immune responses against the disease they are intended to prevent.

In reality, BCG has been recognised to have “non-specific protective benefits” practically since its introduction as a treatment for tuberculosis just over 100 years ago. In other words, it is capable of preventing illnesses outside TB.

BCG, also known as Bacillus Calmette-Guérin, was created in France by two surgeons, Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin. The bacteria that causes tuberculosis in cattle was repeatedly grown (on potato slices) between 1908 and 1921 by Calmette and Guérin until it was no longer contagious to animals. It also defended these same animals when they were later confronted with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the human counterpart.

With low adverse effects and high levels of protection against tuberculosis, BCG was administered to children within a few years. Data from trials in Sweden helped to partially substantiate Calmette’s 1931 hypothesis that BCG also decreased death from infectious diseases other than tuberculosis.

In spite of some instances of “healthy vaccinee bias” (those who are healthier are more likely to get vaccinated), a recent reanalysis of the Swedish data found that the findings did confirm a general protective effect of BCG. Later investigations and studies also shown that BCG has general preventive benefits against lung illnesses unrelated to tuberculosis.

The fact that BCG is a live microbe with a complex outer cell wall is crucial to its capacity to produce a general state of preparedness in the immune system, a phenomenon known as “trained immunity.” The immune system’s oldest (from an evolutionary standpoint) components, known as the innate response, are able to recognise specific components of this cell wall. This interaction trains innate immune cells to react to all microorganisms more efficiently.

vaccine for cancer

BCG has advantages beyond just treating infectious diseases. The use of living or dead bacteria as a cancer treatment was invented in the 19th century. Early in the 20th century, researchers began noticing how mycobacteria, in particular, affected cancer. This led to the development of BCG, which is administered directly to the bladder and is used to treat non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, in which the cancer cells are restricted to the bladder’s inner lining. It continues to be the accepted course of action for this kind of malignancy.

BCG immunotherapy trials have had varying degrees of success in treating other cancer forms. A lack of any benefit against general malignancies was noted in several investigations. Others proposed an impact on paediatric leukaemia or possibly a significant, long-term impact on lung cancer. Positive results have been seen when BCG is administered directly into melanoma lesions as opposed to the conventional upper arm injection, which has shown less success in treating melanoma.

The immune system uses many of the same tools that are successful against bacteria and viruses that enjoy living inside our cells to effectively attack cancer cells. Additionally, the trained immunity effect conferred by BCG activates these same weapons either directly or indirectly. BCG is “immunostimulatory,” in other words.

Therefore, it may come as a shock to learn that some of the non-specific protective benefits of BCG are effective against conditions when the immune system is overactive or mistakenly firing at the incorrect targets. Take type 1 diabetes and the autoimmune diseases multiple sclerosis as examples. In some instances, BCG is working in the other direction to depress the immune system.

According to studies, BCG can lessen and stop the immune system’s role in multiple sclerosis-related nerve damage. It can also fight off renegade immune cells that target diabetic patients’ pancreas’ ability to produce insulin. The power of BCG to boost populations of specific immune-dampening T-cells and its capacity to reprogramme cellular metabolism are thought to play critical roles in both type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

with addition to Covid

And what about the Covid BCG vaccine? The picture is still ambiguous. An overall protective effect was not discovered in a recent meta-analysis, which combines and analyses data from several research. However, some success has been recorded in specific experiments. A decreased risk of Covid, for instance, six months following immunisation. Or, even more strikingly, a 92% efficacy in persons with long-term type 1 diabetes who received BCG for the purpose of preventing Covid.

It has long been recognised that BCG tends to offer varied protection. Its “day job” as a tuberculosis vaccine and its general protective benefits are both true of it. For this heterogeneity, a number of explanations have been put up. The immune system may react incorrectly to BCG if it has already been exposed to other microbes, such as bacteria from the same family as BCG or parasitic worms. Less successful immune responses to BCG may potentially be caused by variations in recipients’ genetic backgrounds.

It will undoubtedly be possible to use this most adaptable of vaccinations effectively in the future with a greater understanding of the conditions under which BCG operates most consistently to deliver its particular and non-specific effects.

Covid-19 updates: A study in The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia journal found that the booster dose of the Covishield vaccine, which is made in India by Serum Institute of India Pvt Ltd, gives the best immune response to new threats of a Covid infection. The study says that the best immune response comes from a Covishield booster dose, no matter what the patient’s main vaccine is. This could be Covishield or Covaxin.

The study shows that boosting a person’s vaccine response with Covishield made them make better antibodies that bind and work than if they got a booster shot of any other vaccine.

Even though both homologous and heterologous boosting with Covishield or Covaxin in people who have already been given Covishield or Covaxin are immunogenic and safe, this news is still surprising.

With more people getting Covid-19 and new strains of the highly contagious virus coming out, it has been noticed that the primary SARS-CoV-2 vaccination wears off over time, making it harder for people to fight the new strains of coronavirus.

At this point, you must get a second dose of the vaccine. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that booster doses should be given.

Scientists from the Christian Medical College in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, and the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, worked together on the study.

The study tried to find out about the safety and effectiveness of homologous heterologous vaccination by giving people booster doses of Covishield and Covaxin, which are the two most common vaccines given to most Indians.

People who had already gotten two shots of the vaccines were used in the study.

The study looked at four different ways to get a booster dose: getting the first shot with Covishield, then getting a homologous booster or a heterologous Covaxin booster, or getting the first shot with Covaxin, then getting a homologous booster or a heterologous Covishield booster.

The participants were given two doses of Covishield or Covaxin 12–36 weeks before the study. They were then given a boost of either Covishield or Covaxin in a 1:1 ratio.

The main outcome was anti-spike IgG seropositivity 28 days after the booster. Other outcomes included anti-spike IgG levels and an evaluation of safety and reactogenicity. The study said that the results of a 90-day “intention-to-treat” analysis were shown.

In the Covishield-primed group of 200 people, the seropositivity in the heterologous Covaxin arm 28 days after the booster was 98%, which was the same as the homologous Covishield arm, which was also 98%, according to the study.

According to the weekly report provided by the World Health Organization on January 15th, China reported the greatest number of COVID-19 hospitalisations since the beginning of the pandemic.

But the WHO said it was waiting for “specific province data disaggregated by week of reporting” before adding in the approximately 60,000 extra COVID-related hospital deaths reported by China last week.

According to the WHO study based on statistics supplied by Beijing, the number of persons hospitalised in China with the condition increased by 70% over the previous week, reaching 63,307.
It has been over three years since the first cases of COVID-19 were reported, and this is China’s highest weekly total since then.

Cases have spiked across the nation of 1.4 billion since early December, when Beijing abruptly abandoned its stringent three-year anti-virus programme of frequent testing, travel limits, and mass lockdowns in response to huge demonstrations in late November.

The World Health Organization and others have claimed that China is under-reporting the severity of the outbreak and have repeatedly demanded more information from the country, particularly regarding deaths, excess mortality, and genetic sequences.

The number of people hospitalised in China due to COVID-19 reached its greatest level since the beginning of the pandemic in the week leading up to January 15. This was the highest level since the pandemic began. According to a weekly report that was issued on January 19 by the World Health Organization (WHO), in contrast to the previous week, there were 70% more people hospitalised in China for the sickness, bringing the total number of patients hospitalised due to the illness to 63,307.

This is the highest weekly statistic that China has released since the first reports of COVID-19 surfaced more than three years ago. At the same time, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that it did not include the over 60,000 additional COVID-related hospital deaths that were reported by China in the previous week because it was waiting for accurate provincial figures that were broken down by week of reporting.

Beijing abruptly abandoned its stringent anti-virus system of frequent testing, travel restrictions, and widespread lockdowns in the early days of December, following massive demonstrations that occurred before the end of November. The system had been in place for three years. Since then, the number of reported cases has increased among the nation’s 1.4 billion people.

According to the WHO, China has been under-reporting the scale of the outbreak. The WHO has repeatedly asked more complete statistics, including information on deaths, excess mortality, and genetic sequences. China’s failure to comply with these requests has led to the outbreak.

https://twitter.com/MegaNewsUpdates/status/1616256718396063745

According to Mike Ryan, the emergency director for the WHO, it is possible that the actual number of instances of Covid in China is substantially higher than what is indicated by the official figures. Without any prior notice, hospitals rushed to find beds and blood, pharmacies rushed to get medications, and government officials rushed to set up special clinics. The zero-Covid lockout was unexpectedly lifted. According to the estimates of the professionals, there could be more than a million fatalities of covids in China in 2023.

Recent years have seen a significant uptick in China’s overall immunisation coverage rate. The question of whether or not the subsequent weeks would allow for the administration of sufficient immunisations to prevent the effects of an Omicron wave remained unanswered.

China is dealing with an alarming rise in the number of Covid cases, which has caused worry around the world. A new study says that by the end of January, almost all Beijing residents will likely have the virus.

According to a study that was published in the journal Nature Medicine, “about 92% of Beijing’s 22 million people will be infected by the end of January, and almost 76% were infected by December 22.”

Also read: China says that in 35 days, nearly 60,000 people have died because of covid.

The study also said that the virus’s reproduction rate had gone up to 3.44, which means that one person with the virus can spread it to 3.44 other people. Notably, a top official said last week that Covid was found in almost 90% of China’s third most populous province. According to AFP, Kan Quancheng, who is in charge of the health commission for central Henan province, told a press conference that as of January 6, 2023, 89.0% of people in the province are infected with Covid.
An expert said before that more than 70% of the people in Shanghai are already infected with Covid, which is a scary number given the rise in cases in China.

Chen Erzhen, vice president at Ruijin Hospital and a member of Shanghai’s Covid expert advisory panel, told Dajiangdong Studio, which is owned by state media People’s Daily, that the epidemic is now very widespread in Shanghai and may have reached 70% of the population. This is 20 to 30 times more than in April and May.

China’s health officials said on Saturday that almost 60,000 people have died from Covid in just over a month. This is the first major death count that the government has given out since it eased restrictions on the virus in early December.
Jiao Yahui, head of the Bureau of Medical Administration under the National Health Commission, told a press conference that between December 8, 2022 and January 12, this year, 59,938 deaths in China were linked to Covid.

The number only includes deaths that were recorded at medical facilities, so the real number is probably higher.

It includes 5,503 deaths caused directly by the virus because people couldn’t breathe, and 54,435 deaths caused by diseases other than Covid. Jiao said. Since China got rid of its “zero-Covid” policy in early December, people have said that it hasn’t told the truth about how many people have died from viruses.Wednesday, health officials said it wasn’t important to talk about the exact number.

Beijing had changed how it counted Covid deaths before, saying that it would only count people who died because of the virus’s effect on their breathing. But the World Health Organization said this was wrong because the new definition was “too narrow.”

We think of COVID-19 as a human pandemic, but it is much more than that. The virus that causes the disease, called SARS-CoV-2, can spread to a growing number of wild and domesticated animals.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the virus has been found in more than 100 domestic cats and dogs as well as captive tigers, lions, gorillas, snow leopards, otters, and spotted hyenas. Zoo workers in the U.S. have found a single positive case in a binturong, coati, cougar, domestic ferret, fishing cat, lynx, mandrill, and squirrel monkey.

The USDA says that only three wild species in the United States—the mink, the mule deer, and the white-tailed deer—have tested positive. In other parts of the world, wild black-tailed marmosets, big hairy armadillos, and a leopard have all been found to have it.

But tests on wild animals aren’t done very often, and new research is starting to show that COVID-19 has probably affected a lot more species than we thought. Joseph Hoyt, a disease ecologist at Virginia Tech, says, “I think the disease has spread to many more wild animals than was thought before.”

How does SARS-CoV-2 get into so many different kinds of animals, and what are the effects?

The link between receptors
A complicated receptor called ACE-2, which is found in all mammals, is a big part of the problem. This receptor is important for controlling blood pressure and other functions of the body.

Once the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein gets into the body, it starts infecting host cells by binding to the ACE-2 receptor, which is found in humans and many other mammals’ upper airways and sinuses.

Craig Wilen, a virologist at Yale University, says that the physical structure of the ACE-2 receptor doesn’t change as much between vertebrate species as it does with other similar proteins. Even so, there are enough small differences that scientists at first thought it was very unlikely that some mammals would get infected.

But this idea has changed because animals that were once thought to be less likely to get sick turned out to be anything but. It now looks like many, if not most, ACE-2 receptors in mammals are vulnerable and don’t act as a barrier for the virus.

Rick Bushman, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine who studies how microbes interact with their hosts, says, “It seems good enough, even if it’s not a perfect match.”

Instead, there are probably a lot of other things at play that make people vulnerable, but almost nothing is known about them.

A vast range

We already know that the virus can infect and spread in wild mink and white-tailed deer, and there is at least one confirmed case of the virus going from humans to the animals and then back to humans for each species. Aside from mink, it looks like domestic ferrets and golden hamsters can also easily pass the virus to each other when they are in the same cage.

In addition to the animals already mentioned, an upcoming study published ahead of print in BioRxiv found probable cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in wild deer mice, raccoons, opossums, grey squirrels, white-footed mice, striped skunks, and more.

Carla Finkielstein, a co-author of the paper, was surprised when Hoyt and conservation biologist Amanda Goldberg found evidence that Virginia opossums were infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Finkielstein says, “We were worried, because that means it’s jumping” to mammals that are not closely related. “From a biological point of view, opossums are very different from us,” says Goldberg. Opossums are marsupials that give birth to babies about the size of honeybees. The babies stay in their mothers’ pouches and feed from teats. More than 150 million years ago, marsupials became different from placental mammals, which are many common mammals.

They thought that if SARS-CoV-2 could infect opossums, it was likely that it could also infect a huge number of other mammals. In fact, the team did find antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in a large number of six species of urban wildlife in southwestern Virginia. They also obtained positive PCR hits—which are indicative of but don’t prove infection—in two of these species and in another four others, including red foxes and bobcats.
