NASA’s Cassini spacecraft recently caught a glimpse of Enceladus, an icy moon of Saturn that hides an ocean beneath its frozen surface. When you look at the beautiful picture, the tiny moon’s cracked surface might look like rivers cut into it, but scientists think they are just heated spots in the crust where ice water and gases rise from the ocean floor and feed Saturn’s E ring.

There is a chance that some of these cracks have hydrothermal vents at the bottom that lead to the ocean floor.

What is Saturn’s moon- Enceladus?

Enceladus, Saturn’s moon, is the sixth largest in size and the 19th largest in the Solar System, for those who don’t know. Enceladus is one of the most reflective things in the Solar System because its surface is made of pure ice.

Enceladus is cooler than a substance that absorbs light and gets to 198 degrees Celsius at noon because it reflects light. Even though Enceladus is small, its surface has a wide range of features, from old areas with a lot of craters to new areas where technology has changed the shape of the land.

In an elliptical orbit, the moon moves away from Saturn at a speed of about 148,000 miles per hour. Because of this, Saturn always sees the same side of the moon. Because of this, the average temperature is –330°F.

Why is Enceladus in the news?

Scientists are looking for life outside of Earth, so the news about Enceladus is important. While Enceladus’s chemistry, huge oceans, and hot core are some of the things that make it an interesting target, it is also a very small planet.

According to reports, scientists have recently thought of a way to search for life on the moon’s icy surface without having to land a space probe on the moon.

A team of Indian scientists has discovered the first evidence of solitary waves surrounding Mars. Through wave-particle interactions, these solitary waves regulate particle energization, plasma loss, and transport in the Martian magnetosphere.

Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) researchers found and reported solitary waves in the Martian magnetosphere using high-resolution electric field data acquired by the Langmuir Probe and Waves instrument on Nasa’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) satellite.

Also read: Crew Members Work on Spacewalk Preparations and Scientific Equipment

The study of 450 solitary wave pulses seen by the MAVEN spacecraft during its five orbits around Mars in February 2015 has been published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Plasma conditions on Earth and in interplanetary space support a range of electromagnetic and electrostatic waves. Using observations, theory, and simulations, plasma waves are extensively explored to improve our understanding of the ambient plasma conditions and fundamental physical processes operating in those locations.

According to researchers, the Earth resembles a big magnet, and its magnetic field shields us from the solar wind, which consists of high-velocity charged particles regularly generated by the Sun. However, Mars is an exception. Mars lacks an intrinsic magnetic field that would allow the high-velocity solar wind to interact directly with its atmosphere as an impediment to flow.

Even with a weak and thin magnetosphere like Mars’, theories imply that regular occurrences of solitary waves can be observed. However, they had remained concealed thus far. Due to the direct interaction of solar winds with the Martian atmosphere, researchers have discovered that the magnetosphere is feeble but very dynamic.

“Solitary waves are bipolar or unipolar electric field variations with constant amplitude-phase relationships. Their size and shape are less impacted by their reproduction. These pulses are predominantly observed in the dawn and afternoon twilight sectors between 1000 and 3500 kilometres above the surface of Mars “In a statement, the Ministry of Science and Technology stated.

As it is known that these waves are responsible for plasma energization and its transport in Earth’s magnetosphere, the team is investigating their involvement in the particle dynamics in the Martian magnetosphere and whether or not they play a role in the loss of atmospheric ions on Mars.

Web Desk for India Today The first indication of the existence of lone waves around Mars has been discovered by a team of Indian scientists. Through wave-particle interactions, these solitary waves, which are discrete electric field fluctuations in the Martian magnetosphere, regulate particle energization, plasma loss, and transport.

The Langmuir Probe and Waves instrument on NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) satellite gathered high-resolution electric field data that allowed researchers from the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) to identify and describe the solitary waves in the Martian magnetosphere.

The high-speed solar wind cannot directly interact with the atmosphere of Mars due to the lack of an inherent magnetic field on the Red Planet, acting as an obstruction in the flow.

According to theories, solitary waves can be frequently seen even in a weak and shallow magnetosphere, like the one on Mars. But up until now, they had stayed undercover. According to recent findings, the magnetosphere on Mars is dynamically weak but generated as a direct result of solar winds interacting directly with the planet’s atmosphere.

“Bipolar or monopolar solitary waves are unique electric field variations that exhibit constant amplitude-phase relationships. The propagation process has less of an impact on their size and shape. Around Mars, these pulses are primarily observed in the morning and afternoon-dusk sectors at altitudes of 1000-3500 km “According to a statement from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The team is further examining these waves’ role in the particle dynamics in the Martian magnetosphere and whether they have any bearing on the loss of atmospheric ions on Mars because it is known that they are responsible for plasma energization and its transport in the Earth’s magnetosphere.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists have proven for the first time that there is a planet that goes around another star. NASA has given the planet the name LHS 475 b and says that it is almost exactly the same size as Earth.

The diameter of LHS 475 b is about 99 percent of that of Earth. With Webb’s accurate light curve, the scientists were able to confirm that the planet orbits its star once every two days. But even though the planet is closer to its star than any other planet in our solar system, it orbits a red dwarf star that is less than half as hot as the Sun.

After carefully looking over the targets of interest from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, the research team decided to use the Webb telescope to look at the target location. The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRCam) on the space observatory was able to get a clear picture of the planet in just two transit observations.

“These first observations from a rocky planet about the size of Earth open up many new ways to study the atmospheres of rocky planets with Webb.” “Webb is bringing us closer and closer to a new understanding of Earth-like worlds outside our solar system, and the mission is just getting started,” said Mark Clampin, a member of the research team, in a press release. On Wednesday, the results of the study were shown to the press at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS).

NASA says that Webb is the only telescope that can figure out what the atmospheres of planets like Earth that orbit faraway stars are like. Webb is sensitive enough to pick up a variety of molecules in the atmosphere of LHS 475 b, but scientists have not yet come to any firm conclusions. In fact, the planet might not even have an atmosphere.

Even though they can’t say what is in the atmosphere of the planet yet, they can say what isn’t there. For example, they know that the planet doesn’t have a thick atmosphere made mostly of methane like Saturn’s moon Titan does.

But one of the most interesting things about the research is that it makes it possible to find more Earth-sized planets that live on land. This ability could help in the search for other planets that could support life.

NASA’s best spacecraft for finding planets has found a second world that is about the same size as Earth and may be able to keep water liquid. Both worlds orbit the same star.

Since its launch in April 2018, NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has found 285 confirmed exoplanets and more than 6,000 candidates. One of the most interesting confirmed planets is called TOI 700 d. It is about the same size as Earth and is in the habitable zone of its star. Now, scientists know that the planet has a neighbour that is just as interesting. They found this out when the Earth-orbiting telescope told them in October 2021 that it had seen something interesting.

“When we first looked at it, we thought, ‘Is this real?'” A NASA astronomer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, Emily Gilbert, told Space.com. Gilbert and her coworkers will talk about their research at the 241st meeting of the American Astronomical Society, which is being held in Seattle and online this week.

Scientists were already comparing the system to TRAPPIST-1, which is 39.5 light-years away and has seven Earth-sized planets. “It’s a really interesting way to compare the two,” Gilbert said. She said that because TRAPPIST-1 is a brighter and more active star, it will be easier to keep studying the TOI 700 system. “The TRAPPIST system is very, very close; all those planets are packed in there very, very tightly.”

Now, Gilbert and her coworkers say that TOI 700 d has an interesting third sibling. This planet, which astronomers have named TOI 700 e, isn’t quite in what is usually called the habitable zone, but this term is still changing. Astronomers have learned that Venus and Mars probably both had water on their surfaces in the past. Because of this, some have proposed a “optimistic” habitable zone, which is where TOI 700 e is located.

Gilbert and her colleagues think that TOI 700 e is about 95% the size of Earth. This means that it is probably made of rocks and goes around the sun once every 28 Earth days, which puts it between TOI 700 c and d. The new planet is also likely to be tidally locked, which means that it always shows the same side to its star.

“That’s most of what we know right now based on TESS data alone, but we do have other projects going on to learn more about this,” Gilbert said. “We haven’t seen any results yet, but good things are on the way.”
