6.3 magnitude earthquake in west Afghanistan

On Wednesday, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck west Afghanistan, resulting in the loss of life and terrorizing locals who were already traumatized by a sequence of aftershocks that claimed the lives of approximately 2,000 individuals over the weekend.

Approximately thirty kilometers (19 miles) to the north of the provincial capital of Herat, where thousands were spending their fourth night in the open after their villages were destroyed by the tremors on Saturday, the dawn quake struck.

Abdul Qudos, 32, exclaimed, “It’s abhorrent; the entire province of Herat is in terror.”

“We are so scared that even when we see the trees moving (in the wind), we think it’s another earthquake coming.”

The most recent earthquake caused at least one fatality and one hundred twenty-five injuries, according to Abdul Zahir Noorzai, ambulance superintendent for Herat Regional Hospital.

“People in these (rural) areas were residing outside their already-destroyed homes when they were struck by newly falling debris from unstable ruins,” he told AFP.

The earthquake was followed by aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.0 and 4.1, but according to an AFP reporter, the devastation to the city of Herat, which is home to over 500,000 people, was minimal.
Numerous inhabitants have taken to tents, automobiles, and gardens as temporary shelters since the magnitude 6.3 earthquake and subsequent series of intense aftershocks on Saturday.

“Because our children are so terrified, they remain awake until morning.” “They are not sleeping,” Aziz Ahmad, age 40, stated.

In the outdoor courtyard of Herat Regional Hospital, patients were receiving medical care. Wednesday morning ambulances arrived, but the majority of injuries appeared to be minor.

Although deadly earthquakes are a common occurrence in Afghanistan, the catastrophe that struck over the weekend was the most severe to impact the war-ravaged nation in over 25 years.

Casualties in a state of upheaval

According to the United Nations, volunteers have been excavating for survivors and corpses from earlier earthquakes that devastated at least six villages in the rural district of Zenda Jan and impacted over 12,000 people.

Officials at the local and national levels have provided contradictory tonnages for fatalities and injuries; however, the disaster ministry has confirmed 2,053 fatalities.

“We cannot provide exact figures for the number of fatalities and injuries at this time due to the fluid situation,” said Mullah Janan Sayeq, a spokesman for the ministry of disaster management.

The provision of extensive shelter will present a formidable task for the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan, which have strained relations with international assistance organizations and seized power in August 2021.

“There is not a single house left, not even a room where we could spend the night,” said Mohammad Naeem, 40. He told AFP that twelve of his relatives, including his mother, perished in the earthquakes on Saturday.

“We can no longer reside in this location. Evidently, our family was martyred in this location. “How were we able to survive here?”

The majority of dwellings in rural Afghanistan are constructed with mud and wooden support pillars, with little reinforcement in the form of steel or concrete.

Due to the fact that multigenerational extended families typically reside in close proximity, communities can be severely devastated by severe earthquakes.

6.2 magnitude earthquake in Nepal. Why Delhi-NCR felt strong tremors

Tuesday at 2.51 p.m., a magnitude 6.2 earthquake with its epicentre in Nepal caused disturbances throughout north India, including Delhi-NCR, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. Initial estimates by the National Center for Seismology placed the depth of the earthquake at 5 kilometers.

“A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck west Nepal. Approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Joshimath. This is at a shallow depth, so strong tremors have been felt throughout northern India, according to NCS office director JL Gautam.

“A vast area is likely to experience tremors when the depth is great but the magnitude is relatively low. However, the converse is also true, as is the case here, where the depth is shallow but the magnitude is so great that vibrations were felt. It lasted between ten and fifteen seconds,” explained Gautam.

“There are numerous faults in the Himalayas. It is a tectonically active region. “We are investigating which errors are involved,” Gautam said.

According to NCS data, the 6.2-magnitude quake was preceded by a 4.6-magnitude quake at 2.25 p.m. and followed by two additional aftershocks at 3.06 p.m. (3.6 magnitude) and 3.19 p.m. (3.1 magnitude).

The Himalayan region, seismically one of the most active continental regions, experienced at least four magnitude 8 earthquakes during an active phase from 1897 to 1952, according to a paper titled “Himalayan Earthquakes and Developing an Earthquake Resilient Society” published in Journal of Geological Society of India in 2020.

The region is currently in a seismic quiescence phase, and sufficient strains have accumulated, but it is still difficult to predict when and where the next major earthquake will occur.

Sunday, rescuers in Morocco scrambled to reach people buried beneath the debris following a powerful earthquake that killed over 2,100 people and leveled entire villages.

Here’s what we know so far:

– Strongest-ever in Morocco –

According to the US Geological Survey, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake — the strongest in the history of the North African nation — occurred Friday at 11:11 p.m. (2211 GMT) in an area of the Atlas mountain range 72 kilometers (45 miles) southwest of the city of Marrakesh.

It was also felt in the coastal communities of Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira, as well as Agadir, which was completely rebuilt in the 1960s following a devastating earthquake.

– Historic city hit –

Damage was caused by Friday’s earthquake in the popular tourist destination of Marrakesh, known for its expansive medina, or old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of ochre-colored palaces and markets.

The city’s fortifications from the 12th century partially collapsed.

Some residents have camped out on the expansive Jemaa el-Fna square for the past two nights out of concern that their dwellings may also collapse.

– Atlas villages crumple –

In the provinces of Al-Haouz and Taroudant, in the most remote communities of the High Atlas, the devastation was the worst.

Near the epicenter of the earthquake, the mud-brick villages of Tafeghaghte and Moulay Brahim were nearly completely obliterated, according to AFP reporters.

On Saturday, 70 victims out of a population of approximately 100 were interred in Tafeghaghte alone.

– Deaths mount –

According to the most recent data from Morocco’s interior ministry, the earthquake killed at least 2,122 people and injured 2,421, many of whom are in critical condition.

Al-Haouz province recorded the most fatalities with 1,351, followed by Taroudant with over 450 fatalities.

According to Paris, four French citizens were slain.

– Rescue underway –

The race is on to get teams with heavy-lifting apparatus into the worst-affected areas, including mountain villages that are difficult to reach.

The Moroccan army and Red Crescent are conducting the rescue operation.

Caroline Holt, of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, stated on Saturday that “the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours will be crucial for saving lives.”

Following an official request from Morocco, Spain has dispatched 56 rescue personnel, as well as drilling apparatus and four search dogs.

Other nations are awaiting an invitation before they can intervene.

Afghanistan’s 5.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Delhi-NCR, Jammu & Kashmir.

On Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Afghanistan, tremors were detected in parts of Delhi-NCR and nearby regions, Jammu and Kashmir, and on the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The tremors were also felt in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri, Srinagar, and Gulmarg, as well as in the Katra region, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, and in several Pakistani cities, such as Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar.

Residents purportedly fled their homes in a panic after the earthquake.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan at 36.38 degrees north latitude and 70.77 degrees east longitude, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

Nonetheless, no reported damage or casualties have been reported as of yet.

Preeti Shankar, who resides in a high-rise apartment in Noida on the eastern outskirts of the national capital, told the news agency PTI that the earthquake struck twice around 9:30 p.m.

The Hindu Kush mountain range, which rests near the intersection of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, experiences frequent earthquakes.

On Saturday, Jammu and Kashmir experienced a total of three earthquakes.

Pakistan and the Hindu Kush region experienced earthquakes at 8.36 and 10.24 am, respectively, which shook the region earlier.

NCS reported that a magnitude-5.2 earthquake struck Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir at 8:36 a.m. today, with a depth of approximately 129 kilometres.

According to NCS, its epicentre was located at 35.46 degrees latitude and 73.32 degrees longitude. The NCS tweeted, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 5.2, Occurred on August 5, 2023 at 8:36:01 IST, Latitude: 35.46 & Longitude: 73.32, Depth: 129 Km, Location: 184 km NNW of Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir.”

No reports of casualties or property damage were made in the morning.

In addition, an earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands early Thursday morning, according to the NCS.

Earthquake tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

Tremors from the earthquake were felt in several sections of the Delhi NCR, Jammu & Kashmir, and on the borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan. On the Richter scale, the earthquake is estimated to have registered a magnitude of 5.8 based on the first assessments that have been made.

It is believed that the earthquake’s epicentre is about 418 kilometres to the northwest of the Gulmarg district in Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the GFZ, the earthquake occurred 189 km below the surface.

Some people on social media expressed their belief that the earthquake’s aftershocks might be felt in New Delhi and other cities in northern India, as well as areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

An intense shaking was reported in Kabul, which is the capital of Afghanistan. The earthquake was also felt in Islamabad, as well as sections of northern Pakistan and New Delhi, according to witnesses who spoke to Reuters from each site.

Up until this point, there has been no word of any injuries or property damage.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale struck the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) in the early morning hours of Sunday.

According to the NCS, the depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the ground.

Earthquake in Jaipur: An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 strikes Rajasthan’s Jaipur

Earthquake in Jaipur:Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, was impacted by a magnitude 4.4 earthquake, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

The tremor occurred at 4:09 a.m. on July 21, 2023, roughly 9 kilometres from Jaipur at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the report.

This was followed at 4:22 am by an aftershock of magnitude 3.1, according to NCS.

Murari Lal Meena, Rajasthan’s minister of tourism and civil aviation, tweeted, “Earthquake in Jaipur. I wish for your safety!”

Former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje tweeted in response to the tremors, “Earthquake tremors have been detected throughout the state, including in Jaipur. I wish for your safety!”

Jahnvi Sharma, another citizen, uploaded a video of the earthquake. She exclaimed, “What a terrifying day to witness such a powerful earthquake in Jaipur!”

Rameshwar Singh uploaded a CCTV camera video of the Jaipur earthquake. He wrote, “See dogs on the street in deep sleep suddenly waking up.”

11 killed in Pakistan after 6.6 magnitude earthquake strikes in Afghanistan and Pakistan

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 100, according to the Associated Press. According to reports, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, and Kyrgyzstan were among the countries affected by the quake.

Last night, the earthquake was also felt in Delhi-NCR and throughout much of northern India.

National Centre for Seismology reported that a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck 133 kilometres south-southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan at 10:17 p.m. IST. The epicentre of the magnitude 6.5 earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey, was 40 kilometres (25 miles) south-southeast of Jurm in Afghanistan’s mountainous Hindukush region, which borders Pakistan and Tajikistan.

The disaster mitigation ministry of Afghanistan told Reuters that at least two persons were killed in the province of Laghman. At least nine people were killed in neighbouring Pakistan, including a 13-year-old girl whose house wall collapsed, and at least 100 others were injured.

More than 100 individuals in a state of shock were transported to hospitals in the Swat valley region of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s emergency services told the Associated Press.

“These terrified people collapsed, and some of them did so because of the earthquake’s shock,” he explained.Tuesday night, Faizi and other officials reported that nine people were murdered when roofs collapsed in various regions of northwestern Pakistan during the earthquake.

Shahbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, stated that he instructed disaster management officials to remain vigilant at all times.

STRONG TREMORS IN NORTH INDIA

Strong tremors of the earthquake were detected in several North Indian states, including Delhi-NCR. The earthquake was also felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal responded to the earthquake via Twitter: “Strong vibrations were felt throughout Delhi-NCR. Wishing you all safety.”

“The depth of the fault was more than 150 kilometers,” a senior seismologist told PTI, explaining why people in northwest India and Delhi felt the tremors for a relatively extended period of time. He further explained that people in northern India first felt the primary waves and then the secondary waves.

6.8 magnitude earthquake hits Ecuador,atleast 15 dead

On Saturday, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook southern Ecuador and northern Peru, killing at least 15 people, burying several others under wreckage, and sending rescue teams into streets littered with debris and downed power lines.

Approximately 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second-largest city, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey to have been centred just off the Pacific Coast. One victim died in Peru, while at least 13 others perished in Ecuador, where authorities also reported at least 126 injuries.

President Guillermo Lasso of Ecuador told reporters that the earthquake had “without a doubt… caused alarm among the populace.” In a statement, the office of Lasso stated that eleven of the victims perished in the coastal state of El Oro and two in the state of Azuay in the highlands.

The quake was felt throughout Peru, from its northern frontier with Ecuador to its central Pacific coast. According to Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola, a 4-year-old girl suffered fatal head injuries when her residence collapsed in the Tumbes region, near the border with Ecuador.

One of the victims in Azuay was a passenger in a vehicle that was crushed by debris from a home in the Andean community of Cuenca, according to Ecuador’s Risk Management Secretariat.

The agency also reported that a number of individuals were buried in El Oro. In Machala, a two-story residence collapsed before residents could evacuate, a pier gave way, and the walls of a building cracked, trapping an undetermined number of residents.

The agency reported that firefighters were rescuing people while the National Police assessed the damage, a task made more difficult by severed power and telephone lines.Fabricio Cruz, a resident of Machala, stated that he was in his apartment on the third floor when he felt an intense tremor and saw his television fall to the ground. He promptly departed.

A 34-year-old photographer named Cruz remarked, “I heard my neighbours shouting and there was a lot of noise.” When he looked around, he observed the collapsed roofs of neighbouring homes, he said.The government of Ecuador also reported damage to hospitals and institutions. Lasso stated that he would travel to El Oro on Saturday.

Approximately 270 kilometres (170 miles) southwest of the capital, Quito, in Guayaquil, authorities reported cracks in structures and homes, as well as some collapsed walls. Earthquake Measuring 3.7 Jolts Meghalaya, Second In N-E In Less Than 5 Hours

On February 28, an earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale happened in Meghalaya’s Tura, just a few hours after a quake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale shook Manipur.

Tremors were reported to have been felt at 6:57 in the morning, 59 kilometres to the north of Tura, according to the National Center for Seismology. It was reported that the depth of the earthquake was 29 kilometres.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.7 occurred on February 28, 2023 at 6:57:18 Indian Standard Time (IST), with coordinates of 26.04 and 90.11, a depth of 29 kilometres, and a location 59 kilometres north of Tura in Meghalaya, according to a tweet from the National Center for Seismology’s official account.

It is important to note that this is the second earthquake that has been recorded in the Northeast on the 28th of February. According to the findings of the National Center for Seismology, a moderate earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale shook the Noney district in Manipur in the early morning hours of Tuesday. The earthquake occurred at 2:46 in the morning, and it was located at a depth of 25 kilometres.

3 dead, over 200 injured as new quake hits Turkey, Syria

According to the Associated Press: In areas of Turkey that were devastated two weeks ago by a tremendous earthquake that killed tens of thousands of people, a new earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck on Monday and caused three deaths and more than 200 injuries, according to the authorities. More structures have collapsed, resulting in the entrapment of some people, and scores of injuries have also been reported in the neighbouring country of Syria.

The epicentre of Monday’s earthquake was located in the town of Defne, which is located in the province of Hatay in Turkey. This region was one of the most severely affected areas by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that occurred on February 6. It was followed by a second earthquake that had a magnitude of 5.8 and was felt as far away as Egypt. It was felt in Syria, Jordan, Cyprus, and Israel.

According to the Turkish Minister of the Interior Suleyman Soylu, there were three fatalities and 213 injuries. There was an active search and rescue operation taking place in three collapsed buildings, where it was suspected that six people were still trapped inside.

According to HaberTurk television, police in Hatay managed to free one person from a structure with three levels while also attempting to access the other three people who were still inside. It was said that among those who were trapped were movers who were assisting people in moving furniture and other possessions out of a building that had been damaged by the powerful earthquake.

According to the Syrian government’s official news agency, SANA, falling debris caused six persons to sustain injuries in Aleppo. White Helmets, a civil defence organisation in northwest Syria, reported more than 130 injuries, the majority of which were non-life threatening. These injuries included fractures and cases of people fainting out of fear, while a number of buildings that were already damaged by the earthquake collapsed.
