Anuj Gupta, Head of Commodity & Currency at HDFC Securities, explained why white metal should be considered instead of gold for Diwali 2023, saying, “Both metals work as inflation hedges and are investors’ have in case of any global uncertainty.” However, because silver has a larger industrial application, it is likely to outperform gold in the event of a supply shortage. As a result, long-term investors should invest in silver if they must pick between the two precious metals.”

According to market expert Sugandha Sachdeva, “Silver is poised to outperform gold, with expectations of reaching levels of around 85,000 per kg initially and potentially soaring to far-reaching levels of around 95,000 per kg.” With crucial support at 65,500 per kg, it is vital to note that silver tends to be more volatile than gold, indicating its larger beta.”

On Diwali 2022, the gold price was 50,580 per 10 gm, whereas the gold rate today is 59,654 per 10 gm on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). This means that gold has returned an 18% return from Diwali 2022. Similarly, on Diwali last year, silver was priced at 57,748 per kg, while it is now priced at 70,025 per kg on the MCX. As a result, this precious white metal has gained 21.25 percent since last Diwali,” said Anuj Gupta of HDFC Securities.

Spot gold was flat at $1,887.79 per ounce on Friday at 2:22 p.m. ET (1822 GMT), down 1.4% for the week. According to Reuters, US gold futures closed the day 0.1% higher at $1,916.5. Because of the dollar’s 0.2% decrease, which capped losses for the day, gold became more affordable for holders of other currencies.

When the US dollar fell from its highs on Friday, gold prices in India surged on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), mirroring the rise in worldwide prices.

According to Gupta, gold prices are under pressure as the US dollar has risen in anticipation of a US Federal Reserve rate hike. The yellow metal has reached its lowest level in five months, while the US dollar has reached a nine-week high.

“However, we anticipate a rebound in the price of precious metals as the market has reached oversold territory.” Friday’s gold prices on the international market have firm support at $1860. If it holds above $1900 and closes above $1910, we can anticipate a rebound in the price of gold. On the MCX, gold prices have immediate support at 58,000 per 10 GM, while they have firm support at 57,500 per 10 GM. On the upside, gold faces imminent resistance between 58,700 and 59,200,” Gupta added.

Airport customs officials seized approximately 56.97 kg of contraband gold in 2018-19, 51.73 kg in 2019-20, 26.62 kg in 2020-21, 47.67 kg in 2021-22, and 52 kg in 2022-23. From January to July of 2023, traffickers were caught with over 30 kilogrammes of gold, according to a customs department official at Lucknow airport.

Prior to the establishment of international flights from Lucknow, the majority of gold smuggling passed through Mumbai. Officials say that after strictness at larger airports such as Mumbai and Delhi, smugglers found smaller airports such as Lucknow and Varanasi more practicable.

Greater amounts of the yellow metal are smuggled from Gulf states because gold prices are substantially lower there.

Gold costs between 45 and 50 crore per kilogramme in Gulf nations. If carried into India legally, 3% GST is added to 7.5% customs duty and 2.5% agriculture infrastructure and development cess, bringing the price per kilogramme to approximately 60 lakh. However, when it is smuggled, traffickers make a net profit of 5 to 7 lakh per kilogramme, according to officials.

The majority of illicit gold originates in Saudi Arabia, Muscat, Dubai, and occasionally Bangkok. Experts estimate that only 10 to 15% of the total amount of gold being transported could be seized.

The mode of operation of smugglers is constantly evolving. A senior customs official stated, “The majority of individuals apprehended with gold are couriers for major traffickers. They are trained before being dispatched with the shipment. The traffickers are intelligent; they are aware that they will only be arrested if they are transporting more than 50 lakh in gold. To avoid detention, the majority of them carry approximately 750 g of gold, which falls under the 50 lakh threshold.”

What drives the price of gold?

Historically, the price of gold has been influenced by a handful of major factors. Dollar value has been negatively correlated with gold prices. Therefore, a powerful dollar index causes gold prices to decline. Second, when there is geopolitical uncertainty, investors prefer the safety of gold, which increases gold’s value. We witnessed this in the 1970s and again following the Lehman crisis in 2008. When currencies are devalued due to excessive money printing, gold emerges as an alternative currency. Interestingly, while India and China account for the majority of gold demand, traditional jewelry demand has rarely influenced the price of gold.

 
How is gold poised to perform in 2017?

Let’s examine the future of gold in light of the aforementioned considerations. To begin, WGC estimates that 2017 will be a better year for gold demand than 2016 was. But this interest isn’t expected to keep gold’s price at current levels for long. Second, how strong is the dollar? The Federal Reserve has indicated that there may be two additional rate increases in 2017. The dollar will strengthen and bond yields will rise under a hawkish rate scenario. Although the dollar probably won’t see a wild rally as it did in the past, the Dollar Index should still do well.

As for my third point, we must wonder if governments would continue to devalue their currencies by flooding the market with even more cash. The Federal Reserve of the United States currently has $4.5 trillion in bonds, while the European Central Bank holds €4.1 trillion in bonds. After 2008, central banks injected liquidity into the economy by mopping up bonds, which led to the creation of this huge bond portfolio. The US narrative is changing toward monetary tightening, though, and this will necessitate a steady winding down of this bond portfolio. The European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan may do the same in the future. So, geopolitical unpredictability is the sole real reason for a spike in gold prices. The continued global uncertainty may be a result of the United States’ bombing of targets in Syria and Afghanistan and North Korea’s threatening rhetoric. For this reason, the safe-haven appeal of gold will ensure its continued demand.

So how do Indian investors go about investing in gold?

First, there’s a small disclaimer to make. Unlike equities, bonds, and real estate, gold defies easy categorization. Gold is, at most, an insurance policy against the world’s instability. As a result, no more than 8–12% of a portfolio’s value should be invested in gold, depending on the state of international politics. But how do you put your money into gold?

While buying gold in the form of bars or jewelry has been the norm in the past, more modern, evidence-based alternatives are beginning to emerge. Try out a few of them

Why do people diversify if it doesn’t make sense?

Two distinct forms of risk allow for effective diversification. Unique assets, industries, or topics provide the unsystematic risk. By pooling together assets with either negative or low correlations, this can be lowered to almost nothing. These include things like the possibility of a rise in interest rates or bond yields, the possibility of labor unrest in some sectors, the possibility of a downturn in the commodity cycle, and so on. However, systemic risk affects every type of investment. All investments should be avoided during times of political unpredictability, slowing GDP growth, or increased global geopolitical risk.

The above graph allows us to make three important inferences. To begin, diversification can only be used for unsystematic risk. What makes themes distinct from industries? In reality, though, themes can extend to many other fields. Let’s take rate sensitivity as an example.
