Reportedly, Google CEO Sundar Pichai is facing internal criticism for how the company introduced Bard, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that Pichai himself announced on February 7 and is viewed as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Google employees have taken to Memegen, the popular internal forum of the tech giant, to criticise the CEO, describing Bard’s introduction as ‘rushed,’ ‘botched,’ and even ‘un-Googley.’

“Dear Sundar, the Bard launch and the layoffs were hurried, incompetent, and shortsighted. Please return to a long-term perspective,” read a message, which was followed by numerous updates from employees.

Another message stated that Pichai and the leadership deserved a “PerfNI,” referring to the company’s lowest performance rating. “In their pursuit of sharpening their focus, they are comically myopic and un-Googley,” it continued.

What transpired during Google Bard’s announcement?

On Monday of last week, Pichai introduced Google Bard to the world, a day before rival Microsoft announced it will integrate language-based AI capabilities into its Bing search engine.

Prabhakar Raghavan, the head of search, presented slides describing the capabilities of the chatbot during Wednesday’s formal unveiling of Bard. However, listeners expected to hear more. In addition, many employees were unaware that such an event was occurring. One presenter neglected to bring the required phone for the demonstration.

This was in addition to a Google-published online promotional video in which the software tool provided an incorrect response.

What is Bard?

A new experimental AI chatbot named “Bard” has been unveiled by Google. This conversational service appears to be intended to compete with the tool called ChatGPT, which is supported by Microsoft.

Bard was announced less than two weeks after Microsoft revealed it was investing enormous sums of money in OpenAI, the San Francisco-based company that created ChatGPT and other technologies that can create new visuals and readable text.

The San Francisco company OpenAI’s ChatGPT has made a splash for its ability to compose essays, poems, or programming code on demand in a matter of seconds, igniting widespread concerns about cheating or the extinction of entire professions.

With hopes that it will adapt the programme to its Office suite and Bing search engine, Microsoft stated last month that it was supporting OpenAI and that it has started integrating ChatGPT features into its Teams platform.

In a blog post introducing Bard, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated, “Bard aspires to combine the depth of human knowledge with the strength, humour, and imagination of our massive language models.”

The fact that Google made its announcement on the eve of Microsoft’s AI-related launch event is just another indication that the two tech titans will compete for control of the technology, also known as generative AI.

“Generative AI is a game changer,” independent tech expert Rob Enderle told AFP, “and it has the ability to disrupt the competitive dynamic for search and information, just like the development of the internet sank the networking giants that came before (AOL, CompuServe, etc.).””

He continued, “Google still largely depends on the fact that their search engine is the most popular; this might change that, consigning them to history.”

What is Bard?

Using the strength, intelligence, and creativity of our massive language models, Bard aims to bring together the diversity of knowledge found throughout the world.

Google’s Bard has been in development for a number of years and is based on LaMDA, the company’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications technology.

He went on to say that the software “draws on information from the web to produce new, high-quality responses,” suggesting that it would provide responses that were current, something ChatGPT is unable to achieve.

Additionally, it states that the service will carry out other, more routine duties like offering party planning advice or lunch suggestions based on the leftovers in a refrigerator.

A child should be able to understand the difficult concepts discussed by Google’s chatbot when it comes to topics like space discoveries.

Pichai noted that “Bard can be an outlet for creativity and a launchpad for curiosity.”

We will make Bard more publicly available in the upcoming weeks, he added in his letter. It’s early; we’ll start, then iterate and improve.”

Before the advent of ChatGPT, which was made available in late November, Google had been hesitant to introduce its own language-based AI out of concern about the reputational risk of making a premature release.

A group of Google workers working on artificial intelligence technologies, according to a report by CNBC last week, “has been urged to prioritise working on a solution to ChatGPT.”

Bard was a service that was being developed under the “Atlas” project by Google as part of its “code red” initiative to compete with ChatGPT, which has gained tens of millions of users since its release to the public late last year while also raising questions in educational institutions about its capability to write entire essays for students.

Researchers have shown that the system can spew out false information or rubbish on a potentially huge scale utilising language models similar to Bard or ChatGPT. In November, Meta, the owner of Facebook, was compelled to remove the release of its own massive language model called Galactica after three days because users immediately began sharing its biassed and inaccurate results on social media. Google also said that customers would soon see AI-powered improvements in its search engine, which is crucial for its impending battle with Microsoft.
