Worldwide, the month of october is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in an effort to raise public consciousness about the importance of breast health and to disseminate information about the signs and symptoms of the disease. The American Cancer Society kicked up this worldwide initiative in 1985 to increase funding for breast cancer research.

According to recent research, the incidence of breast cancer among Indian women, particularly in metropolitan areas, is on the rise. Approximately 100,000 new cases of breast cancer are detected every year in India, as pointed out by Dr. Shiveta Razdan, a consultant in breast oncology at Amrita Hospital in Faridabad. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, and the mortality rate is 10.6 percent. Unfortunately, many cases are detected a decade earlier and more aggressively in India than they are in the West.

There is a lot of false information floating around the internet about breast cancer. Dr. Divya Singh, director of the Maaiya Social Change Front Foundation and a senior surgeon at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, was the person we consulted for advice on how to handle this matter.

1 Myth: Only women can get breast cancer

In spite of the fact that women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer, it is essential to remember that men can also have this disease. As a matter of fact, men have a mortality risk that is 25 percent greater than women do as a result of lower awareness levels and a tendency to miss breast lumps, which can potentially lead to delayed treatment.

2 Myth: Breast cancer is more common in women with bigger breasts

There is no correlation between breast size and the likelihood of developing cancer, despite the fact that checking larger breasts can be more difficult at times. Although being overweight and having dense breasts both contribute to an increased risk of breast cancer, a strong family history of the disease and certain lifestyle choices are the most important risk factors.

PLIXIO Aluminum Tabletop Laptop Stand

3 Myth: Only older women get breast cancer

Breast cancer can strike women of any age, even younger women, despite the fact that the chance of developing the disease increases with advancing years. Due to the fact that breast cancer in younger women has a tendency to be more aggressive, it is essential to diagnose the disease at an early stage by routine screenings and self-exams.

4 Myth: Breast cancer is always linked with family history

Although a history of breast cancer in your family can put you at a higher risk for developing the disease yourself, the vast majority of people who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no such family history. According to the statistics, only approximately 10 percent of people who are diagnosed with breast cancer have a history of having this disease in their family. Having a history of breast cancer in your family may require you to begin tests at an earlier age or more frequently, but it does not necessarily mean you will acquire the disease yourself.

5 Myth: Breast cancer lumps are always painful

Not every case of breast cancer results in discomfort. In many instances, there is little discomfort, particularly in the earlier phases. Although the lack of breast pain does not rule out the possibility of breast cancer, breast pain or discomfort might be an indication of the disease.

6 Myth: Wearing a bra can cause breast cancer

Cancer is not caused by bras or any other type of apparel. It is believed that wearing a bra, particularly one with underwires, might limit the passage of lymph fluid out of the breast, which can lead to the accumulation of harmful compounds in the tissue. This is especially true for women who have larger breasts. However, this theory is not supported by any evidence.

7 Myth: A mammogram can cause breast cancer or spread it

Mammograms are widely considered to be among the most reliable methods for the early identification of breast cancer. Mammograms do require very small quantities of radiation; nevertheless, the danger of being harmed as a result of this radiation exposure is exceptionally minimal.

8 Myth: A lump in the breast is always cancerous

Although a medical practitioner should examine any new lump in the breast, it is important to remember that not all breast lumps are indicative of cancer. The majority of breast lumps, also known as cysts or fibroadenomas, are noncancerous and benign. The type of the lump can be determined by the performance of tests by a healthcare provider.

Health Benefits of Apple: Apples are the most popular produce around the globe. States such as Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in India have apple cultivation as one of their primary industries. Individuals can eat the fruit in its natural state or prepare a refreshment or entrée with it. However, in addition to their delicious, succulent flavor and various colors, they are a nutritious fruit.

If you want to learn more about the nutritional value and benefits of consuming apples, do not stop reading in the middle! Here are given few Health Benefits of Apple.

What Are the Health Benefits of Apples?

Apples are an excellent source of the antioxidants known as polyphenols, as well as vitamins B6, B1, and E. Individuals should ingest apples with their skins intact because the skin contains the majority of polyphenols and half of the fiber. The following are some of the additional health benefits of pears.

1. Good for Heart

Apples are renowned for their ability to reduce the risk of cardiac disease for numerous reasons. The presence of soluble fibres in apples, which are known to lower blood cholesterol levels, is one reason. Apples also contain the antioxidative flavonoid epicatechin, which reduces blood pressure. In addition, studies indicate that a high flavonoid intake reduces the risk of stroke, and apples are loaded with flavonoids. Eating white-fleshed fruits such as apples and pears reduces the risk of having a stroke, according to a second study.

2. Supports Weight Loss

Apples are rich in water and fiber, which helps to satisfy the stomach. When the body is satiated, the likelihood of consuming decreases. Therefore, pears aid in weight loss. Apples are also known for their ability to substantially reduce Body Mass Index, a risk factor for cardiac disease. Furthermore, apple polyphenols are known to have anti-obesity properties.

In addition, according to one study, consuming a whole apple instead of apple juice or apple purée increases feelings of satiety for up to four hours. This is due to the fact that whole apples slow the rate at which a person’s stomach discharges its contents.

3. Promotes Gut Health

Pectin, a form of fiber that functions as a prebiotic, is also present in apples, which contributes to the promotion of digestive health. Having a healthy intestinal microbiota is essential for optimal health, as it is involved in many bodily functions. Because dietary fiber cannot be metabolized, pectin reaches the colon and promotes the proliferation of beneficial bacteria.

By consuming an apple, individuals can increase the ratio of the two most common varieties of gut bacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. In addition, recent research suggests that daily apple consumption may protect against the development of chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

4. Lowers the Risk of Diabetes

Consumption of white-fleshed fruits like apples and pears has reportedly resulted in the reduction of type 2 diabetes by 18%. This is because apples contain high amounts of polyphenols, quercetin and phloridzin, resulting in reducing diabetes. Phloridzin is known for reducing sugar uptake in the intestines and contributing to a reduced blood sugar intake while reducing diabetes risk. On the other hand, Quercetin present in apples has anti-inflammatory effects that might reduce insulin resistance, a big risk factor for diabetes.

5. Helps to Prevent Cancer

Apples are rich in antioxidants that offer protection against malignancies of the breast, digestive tract, and lungs. Polyphenols found in apples are also believed to inhibit the multiplication of malignant cells. In addition, a study on women has revealed that apple consumption reduces the risk of cancer-related mortality.

Apples’ fiber content may also contribute to their cancer-fighting properties. Another study has shown that the pectin fibre found in apples can inhibit the development of cancerous cells and ultimately destroy them. Before reaching a conclusion, researchers are conducting additional studies to determine the precise relationship between apples and cancer prevention.

6. Helps Protect the Brain

The quercetin found in apples may protect the brain from oxidative stress-induced injury. Antioxidants present in quercetin may protect the nerves and brain from oxidative injury, according to rodent research. Additionally, it can prevent brain lesions that can lead to dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, quercetin may modulate inflammatory and oxidative stress markers and prevent nerve injury caused by stress.

Health Benefits of Apples: Apples are crisp, sweet (or sour), and satiating. As part of a nutrient-dense diet, they can aid in the prevention of significant diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and more.

You are familiar with the proverb, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” It turns out that statement is more accurate than you might expect. Millions of people perish each year from chronic diseases, and studies indicate that apples have potent health benefits, particularly in the fight against these conditions. The components found in apples are so potent that, according to a 2022 study published in Antioxidants, researchers are searching for ways to include apples in anti-inflammatory health care products. Following are the 5 Health Benefits of Apples.

Apple Nutrition

The nutrition varies slightly between the different apple varieties, but not all that much. Here’s the nutrition breakdown for one medium apple, per the USDA.

95 calories

0 g protein

0 g fat

25 g carbohydrates

4 g fiber

8 mg vitamin C

98 IU vitamin A

195 mg potassium

Apples are high in water content (approximately 85%) and fiber (a medium apple contains 4 grams of fiber, or about 16% of the daily value), both of which are necessary for feeling satisfied. Apples also contribute to a feeling of fullness by requiring time to consume. Quick-digesting foods tend to leave you ravenous, so you end up consuming more.

In addition, apples have a low glycemic index, which prevents a rise in blood sugar levels after consumption. So, while a fragrant Red Delicious or a sunny Honeycrisp may taste incredibly sweet, your body is able to manage the sugar.

And because apples are both sweet and substantial, eating an apple as a refreshment can be an effective way to satisfy cravings. Just make sure to consume the entire fruit, including the rind, as the peel also contains fiber and nutrients. In fact, a study published in Foods in 2022 revealed that the peel of Fuji apples contributes 41% of the apple’s total flavonoid content and 31% of the apple’s total phenolic content (both flavonoids and phenols have antioxidant properties).

Health Benefits of Apples

1. Protects Your Heart

Apples are beneficial to the heart in multiple ways, according to multiple studies. In a comprehensive review published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition in 2020, researchers analyzed 16 studies on apple consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Consumption of whole apples was associated with a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, stroke, severe abdominal aortic calcification, and death from any cause.

In particular, these researchers discovered that eating whole apples decreased total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol), systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, and plasma inflammatory mediators. The consumption of apples can increase HDL cholesterol, the beneficial form of cholesterol. These findings are based on a daily apple consumption of 100 g to 150 g, which is approximately two medium-sized apples.

2. Boosts Brain Health

In a 2018 study published in Nutrients, Swedish researchers found that those who adhered to a diet known as the Nordic Prudent Dietary Pattern (NPDP) had superior cognitive function than those who consumed more rich and processed foods. The NPDP recommends consuming an abundance of non-root vegetables, as well as pears, apricots, and, you guessed it, apples.

In a study published in Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy in 2022, older adults who followed the MIND diet — a combination of the Mediterranean diet and the DASH diet, which both emphasize consuming fresh fruits and vegetables — had a reduced risk of developing dementia. Experts note that additional research is necessary, but the results are encouraging.

Research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2020 found that people with a low intake of foods with high levels of antioxidant-like components had higher rates of Alzheimer’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. In particular, a limited ingestion of flavonoid polymers, which are found in apples, pears, and tea, was associated with a twofold increased risk of developing ADRD. Similar results were discovered concerning AD.

One medium apple contains less than 100 calories, so it should come as no surprise that apples aid in weight loss. A review published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2018 demonstrates numerous associations between apple consumption and weight loss.

In addition to feeding healthy intestinal flora, apple compounds may reduce the risk of certain obesity-related complications. Prebiotics in apples have been shown to nourish healthy intestinal flora. For instance, a 2021 lab study published in Agriculture investigated whether apple peel (and banana and mango peel) components could function as prebiotics. The results suggest that all of these peels increased beneficial gut flora by providing them with sustenance.

A 2019 meta-analysis published in Current Developments in Nutrition with a total of 339,383 participants from multiple studies suggests that consuming apples, pears, or a combination of the two on a regular basis can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

An intriguing study published in Foods in 2022 suggests that consuming an apple before a meal can reduce postprandial blood glucose levels in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (pre-diabetes). And according to a review published in Food & Function in 2017, consuming apples and pears may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 18%. Even consuming one apple or pear per week reduced the risk by 3 percent.

A systematic review published in BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health in 2021 suggests that a high intake of apples and other fruits (such as pears, blueberries, citrus, and grapes) is associated with a 7% lower incidence of type 2 diabetes.

Apple consumption is associated with a reduced incidence of multiple malignancies. A 2021 review published in Nutrients, for instance, examined studies and concluded that apple consumption appears to be associated with a decreased risk of lung, bladder, breast, pancreatic, colorectal, pharynx, esophagus, ovarian, renal, and prostate malignancies. This fruit contains a great deal of protection!

In addition to preventing malignancies, apple phytochemicals can also delay the progression of cancer, according to researchers. Just make sure to consume the entire fruit, including the peel, which contains many of the cancer-fighting antioxidants.
