In the Haldwani jail, 44 prisoners found HIV positive, and one female inmate has also tested positive, according to Dr. Paramjit Singh, ART Center Incharge at Sushila Tiwari Hospital.

According to Dr. Singh, the number of HIV positive prisoners in detention is steadily increasing, causing concern among the haldwani jail administration.

Regarding the treatment of the detainees, Dr. Singh stated, “An ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) center for HIV patients has been established, where infected patients are treated, and my team examines the prisoners in the jail on a regular basis.”

According to the guidelines of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), any HIV-positive prisoner receives complimentary treatment and medication, Dr. Singh explained.

India has been elected to the Commission on Narcotic Drugs and the Programme Coordinating Board of the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), according to a statement issued by India’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York.

The Commission on Narcotic Drugs oversees the implementation of international drug control treaties, whereas the Programme Coordinating Board of UNAIDS supports and guides the international response to HIV/AIDS.

India was also elected for a four-year term to the United Nations’ highest statistical body.

“The Statistical Commission is the highest entity dealing with international statistical activities and is in charge of establishing statistical standards. The last time India was a member of the Statistical Commission was in 2004, according to the statement.

“Therefore, India rejoins the Statistical Commission after a twenty-year absence. India’s vast experience in the field of official statistics, particularly with regard to its diversity and demography, will be an asset to the Statistical Commission’s operations, according to the statement.

In response to the election, India’s permanent mission to the United Nations stated that the support they received demonstrates the faith the international community has in India’s expertise in these entities.

In the spirit of advancing multilateral solutions to global challenges, and guided by the ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ or ‘The World is One Family’ philosophy, India will endeavor to make its contributions in these and other international organizations.

Jaishankar also responded to India’s election to the statistical body.

Jaishankar announced on Twitter that India has been elected to the highest UN statistical body for a four-year term commencing January 1, 2024. Congratulations to Team @IndiaUNNewYork for performing so well in a competitive election.”
