France has agreed to arm the air independent propulsion (AIP) equipped submarine with a naval cruise missile with double the range of the SCALP air-to-ground missile carried by Indian Air Force (IAF) Rafale fighters. This is in addition to the offer to build three more Scorpene class submarines for the Indian Navy at the Mazagon Dockyards in Mumbai.

The naval version of the SCALP missile has a range of over one thousand kilometres when launched from a submarine and up to fourteen hundred kilometres when launched from a warship. The subsonic cruise missile is propelled by a turbojet and remains subsurface while approaching the target before ascending into the air and destroying any potential enemy threat on the ground. The French Navy has been using the missile on its frigates since 2017 and on its submarines of the Barracuda class beginning in 2022. After minor modifications to the torpedo tubes, the missile can also be used on Scorpene-class submarines.

While Indian Navy officials and diplomats have observed the performance of the Naval SCALP in France, it is believed that the missile manufacturer is willing to produce the cruise weapon in India in accordance with the “Make in India” initiative. The decision to construct three additional submarines at MDL was made because the complete process for the Indian Navy’s Project 75 I will take at least 15 years. In 1999, when Atal Bihari Vajapee was the prime minister and George Fernandes was the defence minister, the decision was made to produce six Scorpene (Kalveri)-class submarines. This allows us to estimate the delay. The sixth submarine will be delivered to the Indian Navy in 2024, a quarter century after Prime Minister Vajpayee’s Cabinet Committee on Security approved the 30-year submarine programme.

Given the rapid expansion of the Chinese Navy, which is expected to patrol the waters of the Indian Ocean by 2025, the Indian Navy has no choice but to counter the PLAN challenge in the Indo-Pacific, as it cannot allow Beijing to control the sea lanes from the Gulf of Aden to the South China Sea with the assistance of India’s former bitter rival Pakistan.

From the content of bilateral ties with France, it is evident that PM Modi’s visit will catapult the strategic relationship into high motion, with President Emmanuel Macron and his companies merely waiting for India to request the technology it desires.

ALSO READ :One killed, four injured after Russia carries out ‘massive’ overnight attack on Kyiv

Politically, it is quite intriguing that the US and France have offered PM Modi a state visit on the eve of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, whereas they offered the same to UPA Prime Minister Manmohan Singh immediately after the Congress won 206 seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The fact that both President Biden and President Macron have honoured Prime Minister Modi demonstrates their confidence in the Indian leader in 2024.

Both Biden and Macron have close personal relationships with Prime Minister Modi, who prefers to speak his mind without compromising India’s strategic autonomy, be it on the Ukraine conflict or China’s expansion.

Indian Navy shared images of MRSAM on Twitter and wrote, “IndianNavy effectively conducted MRSAM firing from #INSVisakhapatnam validating the capability to engage Anti-Ship Missiles.”
According to a report , the army issued a press release in February stating, “The MRSAM weapon system, also known as the ‘Abhra’ Weapon System, is a state-of-the-art medium-range air defence weapon system that is a joint venture between DRDO and Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) with active participation from Indian public and private defence industry partners, including MSMEs.”

What is MRSAM?

The Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile, an air defence system developed by DRDO and IAI, requires active participation from private-sector actors and small- and medium-sized enterprises. The Indian Air Force received the first Launching Unit of the MRSAM System on September 9, 2021.In December 2020, the DRDO launched the Army Variant of the MRSAM system off the coast of Odisha from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur.

The cutting-edge missile system can strike multiple targets at a range of 70 kilometres in extreme saturation scenarios. The missile system is comprised of the Combat Management System (CMS), the Mobile Launcher Systems (MLS), the Advanced Long Range Radar, the Mobile Power System (MPS), the Radar Power System (RPS), the Reloader Vehicle (RV), and the Field Service Vehicle. The missile system is powered by a rocket motor and control system that was developed domestically (FSV).

Isro joins hands with Indian Navy

As India gets ready to launch astronauts into space, the Indian Space Research Organization and the Indian Navy have teamed up to further the Gaganyaan Mission.

The crew module’s initial recovery tests were completed by Isro and the Indian Navy. The module will splash down in the ocean after returning to Earth’s atmosphere from orbit.

In order to get ready for crew module recovery operations for the Gaganyaan mission, the Indian Navy’s Water Survival Test Facility (WSTF) at Kochi hosted the initial recovery experiments. The Navy will be in charge of the recovery mission, which will take place in Indian waters.

The Indian Navy’s cutting-edge Water Survival Test Facility offers aircrews realistic training for escape from a lost aircraft under various simulated situations and accident scenarios. It is ideal for crew recovery trials since it simulates various sea state conditions, environmental variables, and day/night situations.

A Crew Module Recovery Model (CMRM) was employed for the testing that had a similar mass, centre of gravity, outside dimensions, and externals to the real crew module. During the tests, the series of procedures needed to recover the crew module were performed.

“The safe rescue of the crew must be completed as quickly as possible because it is the last task that must be completed for any successful human mission. As a result, numerous trials must be conducted to thoroughly train the recovery procedures for various scenarios “In a statement, Isro added.

The Standard Operating Procedures (SoP) for the recovery of the crew and crew module during the mission would hopefully be finalised as a result of the trials, according to the Indian Space Research Organization. The recovery trials will first be conducted in a confined pool, then in a harbour, and finally in the open ocean.

While the initial trial has been conducted in a closed pool, different phases of recovery trials starting with the recovery of the Crew module to the flight crew training are planned at the Navy’s facility.

“These trials assist in validating the SoP, and training recovery teams as well as the flight crew. They provide valuable inputs for the utilization of recovery accessories. The feedback from the recovery team/trainers helps improve the recovery operations SoP, design various recovery accessories, and finalize the training plan,” Isro added.

Indian Airforce successfully test fired BrahMos air launched missile in the Bay of Bengal. It can target targets up to 400 km away. The Air Force said in its official statement – This missile has been tested from Sukhoi Su-30 fighter aircraft. The Defense Department said that during the test, the missile hit the target ship in the middle. It is the anti-ship version of the air-launched version of the missile.

Now know what was achieved from the test

The Indian Navy will be able to destroy enemy ships up to 400 km away from its warship. Sukhoi will fly with this missile from the warship and will easily target the enemy ship.

military strength increased

With the test of this missile, the Airforce has achieved the achievement of targeting land and sea targets from a long distance. If ever there is a situation of war, then Sukhoi and this missile will strengthen the strategic plan of the Indian Air Force. Defense Ministry said- This test is a joint achievement of Airforce, Navy, DRDO, BAPL and HAL.

In early May this year, India successfully test-fired the BrahMos air-launched missile from the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. This was the first test of BrahMos missile from Sukhoi.

Test by test the power of big BrahMos

The initial range of BrahMos was to hit targets 290 kilometers away. Which first increased to 350 km and now after the test on Thursday, it was successful in hitting targets up to 400 km away.

How did BrahMos get its name?

BrahMos has been developed under a joint agreement between India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia’s Federal State Unitary Enterprise NPOM. BrahMos is a medium range stealth ramjet supersonic cruise missile. This missile can be launched from a ship, submarine, aircraft or land.

According to Defense Department officials, BrahMos is named after the mighty weapon of Lord Brahma, the Brahmastra. However, some reports have also claimed that the missile has been named after two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva River of Russia. It is believed to be the fastest in the world as an anti-ship cruise missile.

BrahMos at a glance

BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile, which can be launched from submarine, ship, aircraft or land.
BrahMos is based on Russia’s P-800 Oceanic cruise missile technology. This missile has been handed over to all the three wings of the Indian Army, Army, Navy and Airforce.
Several versions of the BrahMos missile exist. Land-launched, ship-launched, submarine-launched air-launched versions of BrahMos have been tested.
BrahMos can destroy its target at a speed of Mach 2 speed (2500 km / h) at a range of 290 km when fired from land or sea.
The BrahMos missile can be launched from a submarine from a depth of 40-50 meters from inside the water. The submarine-launched BrahMos missile was tested in 2013.

What is the difference between cruise and ballistic missile?

A missile is a guided aerial range weapon capable of self-propelled flight, usually powered by a jet engine or rocket motor. Missiles are also called guided missiles or guided rockets. Simply put, missile means throwing, burning or sending an explosive towards a target. There are broadly two types of missiles. Cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

cruise missile

A cruise missile is a type of unmanned self-guided missile. These missiles fly very close to the ground like high speed planes. For this, route markings are fed into their navigation systems. That is why they have been named cruise missiles.

It flies within the Earth’s atmosphere with the help of jet engine technology. Their speed is very fast.Cruise missiles can be divided into subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic cruise missiles according to their capability. For example, India’s BrahMos is a supersonic missile and BrahMos 2 is a hypersonic missile.

The cruise missile flies very low, just 10 meters above the ground. Cruise missiles move parallel to the Earth’s surface and their targets are very accurate.
Due to flying at low altitude, it does not come under the radar. They can be launched from land, air, submarines and warships.

Cruise missiles are smaller in size than ballistic missiles and carry lighter warheads. Cruise missiles are used for both conventional and nuclear warheads.

ballistic missile

This missile goes up rapidly after being released and then hits its target while coming down rapidly due to gravity.
Ballistic missile is released from a large sea vessel or a special place with resources. India has ballistic missiles named Prithvi, Agni and Dhanush.

Ballistic missiles are larger in size than cruise missiles. These missiles can carry heavier warheads than cruise missiles.

After the ballistic missile is released, it follows a crescent-shaped path in the air. As soon as they lose contact with the rocket, the bomb in them falls to the ground due to gravity.
Once these missiles are released, their path cannot be changed.
Ballistic missiles are typically used to carry nuclear warheads, although they can also carry conventional warheads.

Indian missiles fell in Pakistan

On March 9, an Indian missile fell 124 kilometers inside Pakistan near its city Channu Miyan. India says that this happened due to a technical glitch. On the other hand, Pakistan claims that it was a supersonic missile without weapons.

Pakistani military spokesman Major General Babar Iftikar said in his statement, a high-speed flying object crashed near its city Mian Channu. This object crashed at an altitude of 40 thousand feet and after flying 124 kilometers inside Pakistani airspace at Mach 3 speed.

Amidst the India-China border dispute, the Defense Ministry has decided to deploy the Pralay missile along the border with China and Pakistan. On Sunday, the Ministry has approved the project to buy 120 Pralay ballistic missiles for the Armed Forces.
