The White House announced on Friday that Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) will be discussed at the alliance’s upcoming summit, but it won’t come out as a member.

Jake Sullivan, White House National Security Advisor, stated that next week’s summit in Vilnius will highlight NATO’s willingness to contemplate Ukraine’s membership, a “milestone” in and of itself, according to Sullivan.

Sullivan stated, “The NATO Summit will delve into the question of NATO’s relationship with Ukraine, including both the question of Ukraine’s path towards future membership and the question of a multi-year-old ongoing partnership.”

“The path to NATO membership for Ukraine will be discussed at the summit, but Kyiv still needs to take additional steps before membership, and Ukraine will not join NATO as a result of this summit,” he added.

Sullivan noted that Ukraine would have the opportunity to discuss the necessary reforms for Kyiv to meet NATO standards.

While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is prepared to attend the summit to establish that his nation should join the alliance when its conflict with Russia ends, Sullivan stated that the White House anticipates Sweden’s NATO membership to be approved in the near future.

Additionally, he stated that Turkey and Hungary may “possibly” abandon their opposition at the upcoming summit.

“If not, we believe it will happen in the not-too-distant future,” Sullivan said, adding that there was “fundamental goodwill” toward Sweden’s move within the alliance.

Last year, Sweden and Finland ended decades of military neutrality and submitted applications to join NATO in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In April, Finland became an official member of the alliance, but Turkey and Hungary prevented Sweden from joining due to the need for unanimity in support of new members.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is preventing Sweden from joining the European Union due to a long-standing disagreement over Stockholm’s decision to allow alleged Kurdish militants to reside in the Nordic country.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi today, as he meets with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval to discuss future multifaceted bilateral cooperation, including a USD 2.7 billion semiconductor chip manufacturing facility in India by Idaho-based Micron Technology, the sharing of high-performance quantum computing technology, and the finalization of US aircraft engine manufacturing in India. Sullivan will also meet with Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar.

Sullivan’s trip to India coincides with Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to the United States the following week, with both natural allies poised to advance bilateral cooperation to the next level. In the wake of increasing Chinese assertiveness over Taiwan and the South China Sea, the US NSA will also debate the situation in the Indo-Pacific, accompanied by US Indo-Pacific Coordinator at the National Security Council Kurt Campbell. The recent incident in which a Chinese warship made a hazardous and deliberate pass across the bows of a U.S. guided missile destroyer in the South China Sea has sparked significant concern among Quad nations.

It is believed that the Pentagon and NSA Sullivan have pressed the agenda to make PM Modi’s upcoming visit to the United States historic, while the US State Department bureaucracy, with its legacy from the past, resisted intensifying defense and high-tech cooperation with India. Even with their closest ally, the United States has never shared aircraft engine technology for fabrication in a third country, including “hot engine” technology. Despite the State Department’s efforts to create obstacles, the Pentagon and National Security Council under Sullivan have insured that India can manufacture the GE F-414 engine in its entirety. It is the same powerplant that will power the Indian Air Force’s backbone, the DRDO-designed and -developed Tejas Mark II fighter. India is also interested in acquiring high-tech ammunition, such as loiter bombs, air-to-air missiles, and long-range guided artillery bombs, from key US defense contractors.

While chipmakers such as Micron Technology have decided to invest in manufacturing in India, the Modi government is attempting to entice leading semiconductor chipmakers such as Intel Corporation to establish a global supply chain independent of China and Taiwan.

Both NSAs will also address the sharing of US technology with India on quantum computing for processing the billions of data collected across the country, as well as the protection of India’s critical infrastructure from cyber attacks by China and Pakistan.

In addition, cooperation will expand in the domains of telecommunications, 6G technologies, rare earth metals mining, and space. During the meeting on initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) in Washington on January 31, 2023, the two NSAs covered all of the above grounds for cooperation, and last week’s first India-US Strategic Trade Dialogue meeting discussed the necessary rule amendments to translate these deals into reality.

The High Commission of India reported that the meeting between India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his British counterpart Tim Barrow took place in London. Also present at the meeting was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak. Mr. Doval’s trip to London follows closely on the heels of his Tuesday meeting in Washington with his American colleague, Jake Sullivan.

“A kind offer by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to join us for a little moment. NSA conversation that took place at the Cabinet Office between Sir Tim Barrow and M. Doval. We place a high value on the Prime Minister’s commitment that his administration will provide full assistance to further develop our strategic cooperation in the areas of trade, defence, and science and technology. The Indian High Commission tweeted that they were “looking forward to the visit of Sir Tim to India in the near future.”
The relationship between India and the United Kingdom (UK) can be described as one of comprehensive strategic cooperation. Additionally, the two countries have finished six rounds of negotiations for a trade pact and will start the seventh and final round of talks very soon.

Rishi Sunak had indicated soon after he became prime minister that he would take a different approach to trade deals than his predecessor, Liz Truss. Although Liz Truss was only prime minister for a few weeks, she set the tone for Britain’s negotiations as trade minister. Rishi Sunak has indicated that he will take a different approach to trade deals.
“My approach will be one where we don’t sacrifice quality for haste,” said Rishi Sunak, adding that he remained “dedicated to” securing a deal with India. “My approach will be one where we don’t sacrifice quality for speed.” “I want to make sure that all of our commercial transactions go well.
