Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader CT Ravi met with party legislator ST Somashekar on Saturday, amidst rumours of the latter defecting to the Congress, and warned the governing party in Karnataka against any “misadventure”

Ravi, who spoke with Yeshwanthpur MLA Somashekar for more than an hour, stated that the party is prepared to resolve any of the leader’s concerns.

“It is true that he is somewhat dissatisfied, but the situation is not insurmountable. Ravi told reporters in Bengaluru, “From the party’s perspective, we are prepared to resolve the issue, and there is no question of him leaving the party.”

In response to rumours that some party leaders were in conversations with the Congress, the state BJP leadership has been reaching out to party leaders. On Friday, veteran BJP leader BS Yediyurappa gathered Bengaluru-based party legislators. However, Somashekar and Bhyrati Basavaraj, the legislator from KR Pura, were noticeably absent from the meeting.

Yediyurappa had stated following the meeting, “No one will leave the party; we are all intact.” There are one or two individuals. We have also spoken with them. I anticipate that nobody will exit the party.”

This week, Somashekar lauded DK Shivakumar, the state Congress chief and deputy chief minister, as his “political guru,” fueling speculation about his future plans.

Ravi, the former national general secretary of the BJP, also warned the Congress of severe retaliation if it attempted to capture opposition party leaders.

“I would like to inform the members of Congress that you won the election, securing 135 seats, and independents are also supporting your government, so you should concentrate on providing effective administration. If you attempt to do too much, we are familiar with Operation Hasta — the hand, which is the symbol of Congress — (similar to Operation Lotus). “You are aware of the repercussions if we engage in this conduct,” Ravi said.

Congress has a clear majority, so it need not worry about numbers. However, if it attempts to play too much, the situation will deteriorate, so the ruling party should avoid putting itself in such a position.

“You (Congress) have a clear majority, so provide the good governance for which the people voted you into office. If you attempt to do something unnecessary, we are not the type of people who will remain mute, and if we take action — I can say this much — you will not be able to recover… If they (Congress) cross the line, I cannot say what we will do, but you can see and sense it,” he continued.

Ravi’s remarks came amid rumours that the Congress was considering inducting leaders from other parties in the southern state prior to the Lok Sabha elections of 2024.

According to Congress insiders, the party is particularly eager to improve its standing in the Bengaluru North constituency. “It is presently unclear whether any talks have taken place, but these MLAs have provided hints. If three [BJP] MLAs, Byrathi Basavaraj, ST Somashekar, and Munirathna, join the Congress, it would increase the party’s chances of winning in Bengaluru North, a senior Congress leader said on condition of anonymity. The current focus of our efforts is on the Lok Sabha elections.

In the meantime, the agriculture minister of the state, N Cheluvarayaswamy, stated that 10 to 15 opposition leaders from the Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP will join the Congress in the coming days.

“Their names and numbers will be revealed later,” he told reporters, adding that both current and former legislators are likely to join the Congress.

When asked about the possible return of those who had left the party and joined the BJP, causing the collapse of the then-Congress-JD(S) government, the minister stated that discussions regarding their entry into the party were currently ongoing.

Friday, state Congress chief Shivakumar stated that the party’s doors were open to those wishing to rejoin. “In politics, anything can happen,” he said in response to a question about whether the party would accept those who desired to return.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, and a host of other leaders will travel to Karnataka for the swearing-in ceremony of Congress leader Siddaramaiah as the state’s chief minister, demonstrating opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien tweeted on Friday that while West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will not be attending the swearing-in ceremony, she has designated party leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar for the event.

In addition to Kumar, Congress leaders have verified the presence of Stalin, Nationalist Congress Party supremo Sharad Pawar, and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Shiv Sena (UBT), Samajwadi Party, People’s Democratic Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist Liberation), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Rashtriya Lok Dal, Kerala Congress.

However, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala criticized the Congress for not inviting Pinarayi Vijayan to the inauguration ceremony. In Kannur, Kerala, LDF Convenor EP Jayarajan stated, “Congress’s action has demonstrated that it is incapable of achieving its mission of uniting the secular democratic forces of the country against the BJP’s ‘fascist’ politics.”

In Kerala, the Congress heads the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF).

Nitish Kumar, who has also been emphasizing opposition unity to take on the BJP next year, has been invited to the swearing-in ceremony by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. “It (the Karnataka assembly election) was a significant election. In addition, I have a longstanding rapport with him (Siddaramaiah). I’m leaving tomorrow,” he told reporters in Darbhanga, Bihar, on Friday.

Kumar did not respond to reporters’ queries regarding the anticipated meeting of opposition leaders in Bihar. “Allow me to return from the event tomorrow. We will make a decision at the appropriate time,” said the JD(U) supremo, who had previously indicated that the meeting could occur after the election in the southern state.

M Veerappa Moily, a senior Congress leader and former Union Minister, told the news agency PTI, “It (the swearing-in ceremony) could also serve as a springboard for opposition unity and a display of strength and solidarity.”

Ramakrishna Upadhya, a political analyst, stated that the victory in the Karnataka Assembly elections “is a shot in the arm for the Congress after losing so many elections.” The victory is indeed a morale stimulant for Congress, allowing it to assert itself ahead of the elections in 2024.

Senior journalist and political observer Vishweshwar Bhat told PTI, “It is a cunning move by the Congress to restore its nationwide presence by inviting opposition leaders to attend the ceremony. The Congress is also sending signals for opposition unity from Karnataka.”

Thursday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) revoked the order to rename curd packets as “dahi” after Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, two non-Hindi speaking southern states, opposed the move and labeled it “Hindi imposition.”

The FSSAI instructed the Tamil Nadu Federation of Milk Producers to alter the labels on their curd packets from “curd” in English and “thayir” in Tamil to “dahi” in Hindi. The directive also applied to butter and cheese, among other dairy products. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and milk producers who said “no” to “dahi” opposed the FSSAI directive.

The milk producers of Tamil Nadu and neighboring Karnataka also wrote to the FSSAI, requesting permission to continue using their regional dialects, as the majority of consumers prefer them.In an order issued on March 30, the food safety authority authorized the use of the term curd alongside any other designation (regional common name) in parentheses on product labels.

“Accordingly, curd may also be labeled as follows: curd (dahi), curd (mosaru), curd (zaamut daud), or curd (thayir),” the FSSAI said in a statement.Stalin condemned the “imposition of Hindi” on curd labels on Wednesday and said those culpable would be “expelled” from the southern regions of the country.

Stalin posted a news article on his Twitter account about FSSAI ordering Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to conspicuously label curd as “dahi.” The Bengaluru-dated report stated that the FSSAI instructed the KMF to use the Kannada term “mosaru” for curd.

Also Read | Many feared trapped after Indore temple stepwell falls

Stalin, citing the report, had stated, “The unrepentant imposition of Hindi has gone so far as to require us to designate even a curd packet in Hindi, relegating Tamil and Kannada in our own states. Such blatant disregard for our native languages will result in the permanent expulsion of those culpable from the South.”

Karnataka assembly elections: The Congress has announced 124 candidates for the impending assembly elections in Karnataka, which are scheduled for May. Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah will compete in the Varuna constituency, while Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar will run in Kanakapura.

Son of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyank Kharge will run from Chitapur. MB Patil and Dinesh Gundurao have received nominations for the Babaleswar and Gandhinagar constituencies, respectively. The party has dismissed incumbent MLA Venkataramanappa in favor of a new candidate.

Former BJP MLC Puttanna received the Rajajinagar nomination, while former Union Minister KH Muniyappa will run for the Devanahalli seat.

The current representative of Varuna in Mysuru is Yathindra Siddaramaiah, the son of Siddaramaiah. Siddaramaiah, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party, presently represents the Badami segment of Bagalkote district in the state’s northern region. DK Shivakaumar is currently serving as an MLA for Kanakapura.

He was on the verge of deciding to run from Kolar. Siddaramaiah had been preparing the ground for Kolar for the past few months, as it was one of his target constituencies. Siddaramaiah listed Badami, Varuna, and Kolar as the three constituencies he would choose from in his formal application to the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) in February.

Previously, Siddaramaiah indicated that he may compete for assembly in his former home constituency of Varuna. His reluctance to choose a district is said to have delayed the release of the party’s initial list of candidates. In 2018, he was defeated by Chamundeshwari in Mysuru, but he defeated Badami in Bagalkot.

In the coming days, the Election Commission is anticipated to release the polling schedule for the upcoming May assembly elections.

(Anna Bhagya). Recently, Rahul Gandhi announced in Belagavi, Karnataka, the “Yuva Nidhi” scheme, which provides a monthly allowance to destitute youth in Karnataka.
