Congress-NC wins Ladakh in first poll following Article 370 repeal

In the inaugural election conducted in Jammu and Kashmir subsequent to the repeal of Article 370 in 2019, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Council elections in Kargil witnessed the triumph of the Congress and the National Conference alliance over the BJP. As the tally of votes for the 26-seat Ladakh Council continued, the Congress and the National Conference significantly outpaced the BJP. The Congress won ten of the twenty-six seats, while the National Conference won twelve, making it the party with the most members. Only two seats were gained by the BJP, while two were won by independent candidates. Congress credits Ladakh council poll success to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’

Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, expressed heartenment at the victories of secular parties such as the Congress and the NC in Kargil. The election was not contested by the PDP. “It is encouraging to see secular parties such as the NC and Congress secure a victory in Kargil.” “The people of Ladakh have spoken in the first election since 2019,” Mehbooba Mufti wrote, as early indications pointed to a decisive victory for the alliance.

As of the third round of voting for the fifth LAHDC elections, approximately 65% of eligible electors participated in the Kargil district.

In response to a Supreme Court directive, the Ladakh administration unveiled a revised timetable for the fifth LAHDC elections in the Kargil region earlier last month.

Following the restoration of the National Conference’s party symbol for the forthcoming election by the Supreme Court, the Union Territory administration’s prior election notification was vacated on the grounds that National Conference candidates were unable to submit nominations. On October 4, elections were conducted for 26 seats of the 30-member LAHDC, as stated in the notification.

The current council is presided over by Feroz Ahmad Khan of the NC. The Congress and the NC collaborated prior to the election, resulting in the fielding of 22 candidates. NC put forth 17. Both parties stated that the arrangement was limited to regions where the BJP faced a formidable opponent.

Having won one seat in the previous election and subsequently three with the addition of two PDP councillors, the BJP fielded seventeen candidates this time around. In the race for four seats, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) vied for support alongside twenty-five independent candidates.

Omar Abdullah, leader of the National Conference, congratulated the people of Ladakh on their victory and warned the BJP that this should serve as a wake-up call. “Instead of hiding behind the Raj Bhawan and unelected representatives, it is time to recognize the legitimate desire of the people of Jammu and Kashmir for a democratically elected government.” “The voices of the people must be heard and respected in a democratic society,” Omar tweeted.

JCO among 9 soldiers killed in Ladakh army truck gorge.

On Saturday evening, officials reported that a junior commissioned officer (JCO) was killed and another was injured when an army truck, part of a three-vehicle reconnaissance patrol, veered off the road and plummeted into a deep gorge near Kiari in the Leh district.

Lt. Col. PS Sidhu, a defence spokesperson based in Leh, stated, “The convoy was moving from Leh to Kiari when the truck went off-road.”

He added, “Nine soldiers, including a JCO, were killed and another was injured in the tragic incident.”

The spokesperson reported that the incident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m.

The Leh SSP, PD Nitya, stated, “At 16:45 (6:45 pm), an army vehicle carrying 10 army personnel, including the driver, was involved in an accident 6 kilometres from Kiari.”

“The vehicle left the roadway and rolled into a steep ravine. “As soon as the reports reached the local police, a team of officers rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation,” she added.

The SSP reported that all of the injured were moved to the army’s intelligence centre.

“Unfortunately, eight personnel were killed on-site. While being transported to the hospital in Leh, a soldier succumbed to his injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities to nine. “Another soldier is in critical condition,” she reported.

“An ALS (Ashok Leyland Stallion) vehicle travelling in a convoy from Leh to Nyoma veered into the valley between 5:45 and 6 p.m., seven kilometres short of Kiari. There were a total of 10 passengers in the vehicle; nine perished and one was injured. The injured personnel have been transported to the hospital, according to a statement issued by the Indian Army.

Reportedly, 311 Medium Regiment (artillery) comprised the army crew aboard the ill-fated truck.

At least three officers, two JCOs, and thirty-four enlisted men were travelling in a Maruti Gipsy, a lorry, and an ambulance as part of a convoy of three vehicles.

Army has not yet released a list of deceased personnel.

SC to hear batch of pleas challenging repeal of Article 370 starting today

The SC is scheduled to begin hearing petitions challenging the repeal of Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, on August 2.

Beginning on Wednesday, a five-judge constitution committee led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will conduct daily hearings.

The bench, which also consists of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant, set the deadline for written submissions and convenience compilations as July 27 on July 11.

The five-judge bench stated that hearings will be conducted on a daily basis, except on Mondays and Fridays, which are days when the supreme court hears diverse cases. On these days, only new petitions for admission hearings are considered; regular matters are not heard.

It appointed two solicitors, one from the petitioners’ side and one from the government’s side, to prepare a convenience compilation and file it by July 27, and made it plain that no documents will be accepted after that date. A convenience note provides the court with an overview of the entire case so that it can swiftly comprehend the facts.

It had stated that the Centre’s affidavit regarding the state of Jammu and Kashmir after the 5 August 2019 notification repealing Article 370 would have no consequence on the constitutional issue to be decided by the five-judge bench.

On that day, the former state of Jammu and Kashmir was divested of its special status and split into two union territories.

Several petitions challenging the repeal of Article 370 and the 2019 Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, which divided the former state into Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, were referred to a Constitution tribunal in 2019.

India’s first frozen-lake marathon in Ladakh.

A senior government official said Sunday that the army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will implement a “adequate action plan” for India’s first “frozen-lake marathon” at Ladakh Pangong Tso at 13,862 feet on February 20.

Lukung’s 21-kilometer marathon will culminate at Maan village. Officials claimed 75 selected competitors from India and abroad will attempt to break the world’s highest “frozen-lake marathon” Guinness record.

They called the marathon the “Last Run” to draw attention to climate change.

The ASFL, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council-Leh, Tourism Department, and Leh district administration are organising it.

“Tourists typically visit Ladakh during the winter for Chadar Trek (in Zanskar) and snow leopard sightings, and we are hopeful that the frozen-lake marathon would help enhance tourism in other places, notably in Changthang,” Suse said.

He stated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Vibrant Village Scheme” will enhance habitats along the Line of Actual Control through tourism.
