Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the road between Mumbai and Goa will be built like the motorways between Mumbai and Pune and the Samruddhi Corridor, which just opened.

Shinde spoke at the end of the “Malvani Mahotsav” on Sunday, January 22. He said that the motorway between Mumbai and Goa will be built from scratch and will have controlled access.

He also said that the road along the coast to Sindhudurg in the Konkan region of the state will be made wider.

The Mumbai-Goa highway is already being built by the union government as part of a larger, 1,622-kilometer-long economic corridor between Mumbai and Kanyakumari.

It runs parallel to the Western Ghats along the western coast of India. It passes through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Mumbai – Goa Highway

The idea for the four-lane coastal highway between Mumbai and Goa came up in 2016, and it was supposed to be finished in 2018. The first work took longer than expected because they had to buy land and get permission from the railroads and the forest department. The highway between Mumbai and Goa is being built in eleven stages. The coastal highway along the water is based on the beautiful road in the United States that goes from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

The 590 km between Mumbai and Goa takes about 12 hours to drive, but the four-laned coastal highway will cut that time to just seven hours. Tourists driving from Mumbai to Goa on the coastal highway will be able to see parts of the Konkan region that they haven’t seen before.

It remains to be seen if the Chief Minister’s plan for a greenfield motorway will happen or if the government will think about making the new four-lane highway into an motorway.
