Tuesday at 2.51 p.m., a magnitude 6.2 earthquake with its epicentre in Nepal caused disturbances throughout north India, including Delhi-NCR, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. Initial estimates by the National Center for Seismology placed the depth of the earthquake at 5 kilometers.

“A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck west Nepal. Approximately 200 kilometers southeast of Joshimath. This is at a shallow depth, so strong tremors have been felt throughout northern India, according to NCS office director JL Gautam.

“A vast area is likely to experience tremors when the depth is great but the magnitude is relatively low. However, the converse is also true, as is the case here, where the depth is shallow but the magnitude is so great that vibrations were felt. It lasted between ten and fifteen seconds,” explained Gautam.

“There are numerous faults in the Himalayas. It is a tectonically active region. “We are investigating which errors are involved,” Gautam said.

According to NCS data, the 6.2-magnitude quake was preceded by a 4.6-magnitude quake at 2.25 p.m. and followed by two additional aftershocks at 3.06 p.m. (3.6 magnitude) and 3.19 p.m. (3.1 magnitude).

The Himalayan region, seismically one of the most active continental regions, experienced at least four magnitude 8 earthquakes during an active phase from 1897 to 1952, according to a paper titled “Himalayan Earthquakes and Developing an Earthquake Resilient Society” published in Journal of Geological Society of India in 2020.

The region is currently in a seismic quiescence phase, and sufficient strains have accumulated, but it is still difficult to predict when and where the next major earthquake will occur.

After a bilateral conference at Hyderabad House in Delhi on Thursday afternoon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, signed seven bilateral agreements. Modi stated that during his first visit to Nepal in 2014, shortly after he became prime minister for the first time, he provided a ‘HIT formula’ to strengthen India-Nepal relations and that today’s agreements would help that relationship become a’super HIT’.

“I recall… in 2014, nine years ago, I made my first trip to Nepal. At the time, I proposed a ‘hit’ formula for India-Nepal relations: highways, interstates, and transstates. I stated that we will establish contacts that will prevent our borders from becoming barriers. Today, the Prime Minister of Nepal and I have made a number of crucial decisions to make our partnership a smashing success,” said Modi.

We will continue to endeavor to elevate India-Nepal relations to the Himalayas.

On his first bilateral voyage abroad since assuming office in December of last year, the Nepalese prime minister announced that he had extended a ‘cordial invitation’ to Modi to visit his country.

“I am making my fourth trip to India. Ancient is the relationship between India and Nepal. Today, we discussed ways to strengthen the connections between the two countries. We also launched many innovative initiatives together,” Dahal said.

The two prime ministers signed a number of important agreements, including new rail links to enhance physical connectivity and a long-term agreement that is expected to strengthen the electricity-generating sectors of each nation.

This is consistent with the expectations for the Nepalese prime minister’s visit.

The power sector

Sources privy to the discussions identified cooperation in the power sector as a “key focus area” and noted that Nepal exports over 450 MW of electricity to India.

Indian firms have expressed interest in constructing hydropower projects in Nepal, and several participated in a summit held in Nepal in April.

India has constructed a number of hydroelectric facilities, such as Pokhara (1 MW), Trisuli (21 MW), Western Gandak (15 MW), and Devighat (14.1 MW), among others.

In addition, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd and the Nepal Electricity Authority have signed agreements for the development and implementation of the 490.2 MW Arun-4 hydropower project.

It is anticipated that the initiative will generate electricity for Nepal, India, and Bangladesh. SJVN owns 51% of the market, while the NEA holds 49%.

Invited to invest in the West Seti Hydropower Project are Indian companies.

Talks on trains and transit

Modi and Dahal virtually inaugurated integrated checkpoints in Rupaidiha, India, and Nepalgunj, Nepal, and a cargo train from Bihar to Nepal. The Nepalese premier was also anticipated to discuss the opening of additional air routes.

The Ramayana Circuit

Ancient and robust religious and cultural connections exist between India and Nepal. “We have decided to expedite projects related to the Ramayana Circuit, one of 15 tourism circuits identified for development, to further strengthen this,” Modi said.

Nepal’s importance

Nepal is vital to India’s overall strategic interests in the region, and the leaders of the two nations have frequently remarked on the age-old ‘roti beti’ relationship, which refers to cross-border marriages between citizens of the two nations.

Over 1,850 kilometers of its frontier is shared with five Indian states: Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Nepal, which is landlocked, relies significantly on India for the transportation of goods and services, and India provides Nepal with access to the sea.

The India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1950 is the foundation of the countries’ special relations.

During the annual Sindoor (vermilion) Jatra, the Newa community of Thimi Nepal, paints the city red as the town gathers in the front yard of the Balkumari temple to celebrate the Nepali Lunar new year.

On the second day of the nepali lunar new year, devotees carry 32 palanquins filled with idols of various deities while chanting and dancing to traditional beats. The dawn of red begins when devotees make three circuits around the Balkumari Temple in palanquins.

All participants, including children, adolescents, elders, and the elderly, smear vermilion on each other’s faces and hurl it in the air in jest. The Newar community in Madhyapur celebrates on the second day of the Nepali month Baisakh. The festival also signifies the beginning of spring, Thimi.

“This is Thimi’s historic festival in which 32 palanquins are paraded throughout the city. It coincides with the Nepali Lunar New Year, which is celebrated by thousands of devotees and revelers, said Pushpa Ratna Ranjit, one of the Sindoor Jatra revelers, to media.

A day prior to the observance of Sindoor Jatra, the residents of Thimi engage in Gunsin Chhoyekegu, also known as the burning of forest wood. The following day, palanquins known locally as “Khat” are transported to Vishnuvir during the day. Deities are transported overnight from Layakhu to Kwachhen (Dakshin Barahi) on Khats.

On Nepali Lunar New Year’s Day, devotees present offerings to Goddess Balkumari and pray to her. They swarm to her temple in ancient Thimi. Since time immemorial, she has been Bhairab’s spouse. They are both guardian gods of the Kathmandu Valley.

Evenings are spent performing good deeds, such as lighting oil lanterns. Some even rest them for hours on their legs, abdomen, forehead, and arms. The following day, musicians play Dhimay Baja (traditional drums and cymbals) to enliven the ambiance and encourage the revelers.

“The celebration literally begins on New Year’s Day. The Siddhikali Jatra is observed on the first day, and on the second day, the Balkumari is the primary location of the fair. When the fair falls on a Saturday, the palanquins are transported to Dakshin Barahi, where a similar fair is held and toured,” Sanu Batra, an additional participant, told media.

The vermilion powder that is smeared on each other and flung into the air at the beginning of the year represents prosperity. The music and vermillion powder fill the area with vibrancy and merriment as devotees spin their community chariots in celebration.

Nepal Presidential election:On Thursday, Nepal will elect a new president. The Election Commission announced on Wednesday that all election preparations are complete and that results are expected at 7 p.m. (Local Time).

“All preparations- technical, human resources, and other managerial-related – have been completed in anticipation of the voting for the election of the President to be held in Lhotse Hall of the Parliament Building in New Baneshwor,” said Mahesh Sharma Paudel, the Election Officer.

The Election Commission has set up two separate polling stations for federal parliamentarians, while the polling station for provincial assembly members is located in the hall.

Voting will begin at 10 AM (local time) today and end at 3 PM (Local Time). There are two candidates in the running: senior leader of the Nepali Congress Ram Chandra Poudel and vice-chair of the CPN (UML) Subash Chandra Nembang.

The Office of the Election Officer has announced that vote counting will begin at 3 p.m. (NST) on Thursday after voting concludes and that the results will be announced by 7 p.m. (NST). Meanwhile, legislators from all provinces have arrived in Kathmandu for the election.

The Electoral College consists of 884 members, including 275 members of the House of Representatives, 59 members of the National Assembly, and 550 members of the seven provincial assemblies.

If no seat in the federal parliament or provincial assembly is vacant, there will be a total weightage of 52,786 votes in the Electoral College. To be elected, a candidate must receive a majority of the votes cast.

The weight of a federal parliament member’s vote is 79, while that of a provincial assembly member is 48.

The pro-monarchy party will not vote. Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), known for its pro-monarchy stance, has decided to boycott Thursday’s Nepal Presidential Election.

A meeting of the party’s central working committee on Wednesday decided to abstain from voting today.

Mohan Shrestha, spokesman for the RPP, confirmed that the central working committee has chosen to remain neutral in the upcoming presidential election.

“It has been unanimously decided not to participate in the presidential election and to remain neutral,” Shrestha said.

Ram Chandra Paudel, the senior leader of the Nepali Congress, is supported by eight parties in today’s election, whereas Subash Chandra Nembang, the sole candidate of the CPN-UML, is expected to receive support from independent lawmakers.

RPP had neither endorsed nor proposed a presidential candidate. Paudel and Nembang had subsequently met with RPP Chairman Rajendra Lingden and other office-bearers at the RPP office to solicit their votes in the election.

But on the eve of the Nepal presidential election, RPP has decided to abstain from voting. During Wednesday’s five-hour meeting, the majority of the central working committee members opined that the party should not participate in the presidential election because the party’s agenda is the monarchy.

According to a Friday media report, the Nepali government has banned the import of fresh roses from nations such as India and China ahead of Valentine’s Day.

In a Thursday notification, the Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture instructed subordinate border offices not to provide import permits for rose blossoms due to the risk of plant diseases.

The he centre banned the import of rose blossoms citing exceptional grounds in a written directive to 15 customs offices on the borders of Nepal, India, and China. Valentine’s Day is annually observed on February 14.

The notification prohibits the importation of roses from Kakadbhitta in the east to Gadda Chowki in the west and any northern customs stations.

The notification stated, “All offices under the centre are requested not to provide rose flower import licences unless there is an alternative arrangement for specific circumstances.”

The Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Centre stated that the import has been temporarily halted owing to the risk of plant diseases.

The center’s information officer, Mahesh Chandra Acharya, stated that the import was immediately halted due to the likelihood of diseases and insects in the produce.

Issuing a notice, the Ministry of Agriculture has decided to stop the import of fresh rose flowers in the country until further notice.

Nepal Floriculture Association stated that there could be shortage of rose flowers in this Valentine’s Day.

“It is evident that roses and other plants are prone to illness. “For the time being, imports have been halted because there has been no adequate research on these diseases,” Acharya explained.

Since the meeting of the technical committee has not yet occurred, further decisions will not be made until after the meeting, according to Acharya.

In the first six months of the current fiscal year, Nepal imported 10,612 kg of rose blossoms valued 1.3 million, as reported by the Customs Department.

JB Tamang, the programme coordinator of the Nepal Floriculture Association (NFA), stated that the government’s action will now result in a rose shortage on the market.

According to the Nepal Flower Association, over 300,000 rose sticks are sold in Nepal around Valentine’s Day. He stated that approximately 20,000 rose blooms are created in Nepal.

According to traders, about 80 percent of the demand for red roses is met by imports, as reported by the Kathmandu Post.

On Valentine’s Day, the NFA reports that demand for long-stem red roses explodes to 150,000 stems. The majority of local flower producers can produce between 30,000 and 40,000 stems, while the remainder must be imported from India. Delhi, Bangalore, and Kolkata are Nepal’s leading suppliers of red roses.

The widow of a pilot who flew for the same airline and died in a plane crash 16 years ago was the co-pilot of the Yeti Airlines flight that crashed in Nepal on Sunday.

In 2010, Anju Khatiwada went to work for Yeti Airlines, just like her husband had done before her. Dipak Pokhrel also worked for the Nepali airline, but he died when the small passenger plane he was flying crashed just before landing.

Khatiwada was the co-pilot of the flight from Kathmandu that crashed as it approached the city of Pokhara on Sunday. At least 68 people died in the Himalayan country’s worst plane crash in 30 years.

So far, none of the 72 people on board have been found alive.

“Her husband, Dipak Pokhrel, died in 2006 when a Yeti Airlines Twin Otter plane crashed in Jumla,” a spokesman for the airline told Reuters, referring to Khatiwada. “After her husband died, she used the money from the insurance to train to be a pilot.”

Khatiwada was a pilot with more than 6,400 hours of flight time. Bartaula said that Khatiwada had flown the popular tourist route from Kathmandu, the country’s capital, to Pokhara, its second-largest city.

The body of Kamal KC, who was the captain of the plane and had flown for more than 21,900 hours, has been found and identified.

Bartaula said that Kathiwada has not been found, but it is thought that she is dead.

“On Sunday, she was flying the plane with an instructor pilot, which is how the airline usually works,” a Yeti Airlines employee who knew Khatiwada said.

“She was always ready to do any job, and she had already flown to Pokhara,” said the official, who didn’t want to give his name because he wasn’t allowed to talk to the media.

Reuters couldn’t get in touch with any of her family members right away.

According to eyewitness accounts and a video of the crash that was posted on social media, Khatiwada’s ATR-72 plane rolled from side to side before it crashed in a gorge near Pokhara Airport and caught fire.

The plane’s cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were found on Monday. They may help investigators figure out why the plane crashed in clear weather.

Since 2000, nearly 350 people have died in Nepal in plane or helicopter crashes. The country has eight of the 14 highest mountains in the world, including Everest, and sudden changes in the weather can make things dangerous.
