Prescription medicine is an effective method for treating and managing type 2 diabetes, as well as for accelerating weight loss in those who also suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) or high cholesterol.

Wegovy (semaglutide) and Ozempic (semaglutide) may be prescribed by doctors for this reason. Both of these drugs are well-known brand names in the field of obesity treatment.

You or someone you care about may have been prescribed Wegovy or Ozempic, but you may still have questions about which drug is best.

This article compares and contrasts Wegovy and Ozempic, two similar but not identical drugs, focusing on their approved indications (conditions for which a medicine can be used) and off-label applications, in an effort to answer these questions.

Overview of Wegovy and Ozempic

Both Wegovy and Ozempic belong to the class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists, and are available only with a doctor’s prescription. GLP-1 is a hormone that increases insulin production and satiety. The same active ingredient, semaglutide, is found in each of these medicines.

MedlinePlus. Injection of semaglutide.

The FDA has approved both Wegovy and Ozempic, albeit for distinct uses and at different doses.

Clinical trials showing that semaglutide, then known under the brand name Ozempic, efficiently controlled blood sugar in individuals with type 2 diabetes led to the drug’s initial FDA approval in 2017. Semaglutide’s weight-loss benefits have also been demonstrated.

Differences: Wegovy vs. Ozempic

Both Ozempic and Wegovy have certain commonalities and have some significant distinctions. The primary areas of distinction are the recognized uses and average doses recommended by the FDA.

Which Is More Effective?

Separate clinical trials have examined both Wegovy and Ozempic in depth, with findings reflecting the following:

Wegovy helped adults without diabetes lose 12.4% more weight than those who took a placebo during the study’s trial period.

In a separate research, persons with diabetes who took Wegovy saw a 6.2% reduction in their starting body weight compared to those who took a placebo.9

Ozempic’s efficacy and safety in treating type 2 diabetes were studied in clinical studies, and the drug’s ability to cause weight loss was a welcome side effect.

Side Effects & Safety

Since the active element in both Wegovy and Ozempic is the same, using both at the same time can have dangerous consequences.

ALSO READ: Understanding Morbid Obesity

\Both Wegovy and Ozempic come with a boxed warning, the FDA’s strongest warning for potentially life-threatening adverse effects, due to the extremely high risk of thyroid C-cell tumors.

Thyroid C-cell malignancies were observed in rodent investigations using both drugs. The link between semaglutide and human C-cell thyroid cancers, such as medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), has not been established.

What Medications Interact With Wegovy or Ozempic?

The following drugs may interact negatively with both Wegovy and Ozempic, as is the case with most medications:

You shouldn’t take both Wegovy and Ozempic at once because taking two GLP-1 agonists at once can be dangerous. Rybelsus (semaglutide) and Victoza (liraglutide)12 are two further examples of GLP-1 agonists.

Combining either Ozempic or Wegovy with Glyset (miglitol) or insulin can cause dangerously low blood sugar levels.5 If your healthcare practitioner recommends these drugs for you, they will teach you on monitoring your blood sugar often until you observe how the treatments effect you.

Both Wegovy and Ozempic slow gastric emptying (how quickly food moves through your digestive system), which can affect how well other drugs work. These interactions highlight the need of discussing all of your existing medications with your healthcare physician prior to beginning treatment with Wegovy or Ozempic.

Phentermine, sold under the trade names Lomaira or Adipex-P, is a prescription medicine used in combination with a healthy diet and exercise to help with weight loss in patients with obesity.

Indirect sympathomimetics, of which it is a member, act by boosting the brain’s concentration of certain neurotransmitters, particularly norepinephrine, to reduce hunger.

What Is Phentermine?

People who are obese or who are overweight and have additional health conditions are frequently administered phentermine to aid in weight loss. If you have already attempted to reduce weight through diet and exercise without success, it may be suggested as a further step.

ALSO READ: Understanding Morbid Obesity

Your doctor may first calculate your body mass index (BMI) to see if phentermine is necessary for you. If your doctor determines that phentermine will

Phentermine and Topiramate

Combining the appetite suppressant phentermine with the anticonvulsant topiramate has been tried. Qysmia is the brand name for this combination drug. This combination has been approved for long-term weight management, unlike phentermine as a monotherapy.

How Does Phentermine Work in the Body?

Indirect sympathomimetics, like phentermine, are a type of medicine. By stimulating the sympathetic nervous system, sympathomimetic drugs work. The receptors that indirect sympathomimetics influence are varied.

Appetite suppression by phentermine occurs in the central nervous system. Studies have demonstrated that it acts on the hypothalamus. Appetite-suppressing neurotransmitters like norepinephrine are released from brain cells when phentermine is taken.

If you are able to curb your appetite, you will eat less calories overall, which could lead to weight loss. A low-calorie diet and consistent physical activity are recommended in conjunction with this drug.

How to Take Phentermine

Tablets and extended-release capsules both exist for phentermine. Both oral capsules and tablets should be swallowed whole.

Lomaira is commonly taken as 8 milligrams (mg) three times day 30 minutes before meals.

Weight loss in adults is often accomplished by taking 15-37.5 mg of Adipex-P (a brand name for phentermine) once daily, either before or two hours after breakfast. Taking this medicine late in the day could make sleeping difficult.

Reviewing the data on the prevalence of obesity in children over the years reveals a definite upward trend:

In 1971–1974, just 5% of children aged 2–5 fulfilled the current definition of obesity; by 2017–2018, 13.4% of children in this age range were obese.

Compared to the 1971-1974 survey, which found obesity in only 4% of children aged 6-11, the 2017-2018 study found that 20.3% of children in this age range were obese.

The percentage of obese children aged 12-19 increased from 6.1% in the 1971-1974 survey to 21.2% in the 2017-2018 one.

Thankfully, the rate of childhood obesity has not skyrocketed in recent years.

There’s good reason for the increased focus on obesity recently; the problem is getting so bad that the American Obesity Foundation has declared a “obesity pandemic.”

From 1999 to 2020, the rate of occurrence increased from 30.5 percent to 41.9 percent. During the same years, morbid obesity (also known as extreme obesity and class 3 obesity) grew from 4.7% to 9.2%.

In response to these developments, the American Medical Association classified obesity as a complex, chronic disease in 2013. The report also recognized the “enormous humanitarian and economic impact of obesity as requiring the medical care, research, and education attention of other major global medical diseases.”

Obesity vs. Morbid Obesity

Body mass index (BMI) is used to diagnose both obesity and morbid obesity. A person’s index is calculated by dividing their height by their weight. Simply said, it is your body mass index, calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by the square of your height (in meters).

The U.S. government’s disease-prevention headquarters. Concerning the body mass index of adults.

The body mass index (BMI) is an inaccurate and outmoded metric. It does not account for individual differences in anatomy, culture, sexual orientation, or chronological age.

Definitions Matter

Despite their usefulness in determining who is obese or seriously obese, there are other motivations for creating such categories and classifications. Patients’ eligibility for surgical and pharmaceutical aids in weight loss is also assessed using these categories.

A BMI of 40 or higher is considered diagnostic of morbid obesity, which may make a patient eligible for bariatric surgery or specific anti-obesity drugs.

Cancer, cardiovascular disease, heartburn, obstructive sleep apnea, and Type 2 diabetes are all linked to obesity, and such measurements can suggest a person’s susceptibility for these diseases. In general, as one’s body mass index (BMI) rises, so does one’s risk of developing one of these diseases.

Risks and Complications of Morbid Obesity

Obese people are aware that their condition can affect even fundamental functions like breathing and moving around. This implies they may tire quickly from even a short stroll and fall behind the pace of others.

Obesity and morbid obesity are associated with a wide range of serious to fatal consequences. However, it is not always easy to make a clear distinction. However, not all complications are as obvious as arthritis. Weight gain of just 2 pounds raises one’s risk of developing arthritis by 9-13%.9

Obesity complications likely to increase when body mass index (BMI) increases from class 1 to class 3. (And a patient may feel even worse as a result.)

Treatment of Morbid Obesity

Consider receiving a morbid obesity diagnosis as the first, but crucial, step toward mitigating these risks and enhancing your health and quality of life.

A bariatric healthcare specialist, psychologist, exercise physiologist, and licensed dietitian and nutritionist could all be part of a treatment team. This team will work together to build a safe and specific weight-loss plan for you.

It’s possible that the plan will incorporate more than one strategy, including modifications to eating and exercise habits, the use of prescription drugs, and perhaps surgical procedures to help with weight loss. The best results are often achieved by combining different strategies, as shown by the available research. “Successful” means losing weight healthily and continuing to do so over time.

Changing Behavior

As part of your effort to alter your habits, you should begin eating healthier and engaging in more physical activity. The first steps are to commit to a healthy lifestyle by making a plan to lose weight and sticking to it.

This diary can assist discover triggers that may cause you to overeat and avoid them, reward new actions (such starting a fitness activity), and perhaps acquire new ideas regarding body image. Establishing a regular sleep routine and cultivating a support system (including family, friends, and coworkers) can also be helpful.

Dieting

A low-calorie diet entails prioritizing healthier options over less-healthy ones and cutting out greasy, processed meals entirely. The majority of people who successfully lose weight do so by cutting their caloric intake by 500 to 1,000 calories per day.

Exercising

Finding your optimal level of physical activity is usually the easy part; the real challenge is in maintaining that level over time. The aspect that could take some experimenting is locating a satisfying outlet.

After all, those with morbid obesity may have trouble with physical activity. Because of this, you may find that (at least initially) your exercise consists of reserving a parking spot more and further from the entrances and riding an under-desk bike for brief intervals multiple times per day.

An unhealthy and excessive quantity of bodily fat is known as obesity.Even though it impacts over 40% of Americans, the legitimacy of obesity as a medical condition is still up for grabs.

Long considered a self-inflicted health problem, in 2013, the American Medical Association (AMA) joined other medical institutions and organizations in labeling obesity a chronic disease. At issue is whether or not obesity is a lifestyle-related condition that can be diagnosed and treated. Obesity is now considered an illness due to the serious health problems it causes and the numerous risk factors that contribute to it.

This article provides an overview of obesity, including its description and classification, the risks of considering it as a matter of personal choice, its root causes, and the methods now used to treat and manage it.

Obesity: A Diagnosable Disease Classified by BMI

Healthcare providers typically diagnose and describe obesity using body mass index (BMI), a measure of the fat composition of your body. Simply divide your weight in kilograms (kg) by the square of your height in meters to get your body mass index (BMI). According to this scale, there are four distinct categories of weight:

Brief History of Classifying Obesity

In many parts of the world and throughout history, being overweight was seen as a sign of good health. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician who lived from 460 to 370 B.C., was the first to correlate obesity to an increased risk of disease and death. The criteria we use to define obesity have changed over time.

Conventional wisdom held that poor dietary habits and an inactive lifestyle were the sole causes of obesity. However, medical boards and other health bodies began treating obesity as a chronic condition once the WHO made that declaration in 1997. Neurological disorders are thought to result from a combination of environmental, genetic, biochemical, and behavioral factors, according to medical professionals.

Obesity Stigma

The cultural zeitgeist is affected by the debate over whether obesity is a condition or an illness. There has been a growth in prejudice and generalizations about those who are overweight or obese in the United States. There is a false stigma that links obesity with lack of motivation and discipline.

ALSO READ: Best Yoga Poses of Winter Season

Individuals who are overweight may internalize these biases and experience discrimination as a result. The stigma associated with it can cause people to eat more, not exercise, and negatively affect their mood.

Causes: How Do People Develop Obesity?

Consuming more calories (energy) than your body requires to function is a major contributor to obesity. Triglycerides are stored as extra fats, carbs, alcohol, and protein in fatty tissue.

Fat, or adiposity, develops as a result of this buildup over time. Obesity can also be caused by lifestyle choices including what you eat and drink.

Environmental

How you live, work, and play all play a role in how much weight you ultimately gain. Obesity rates are higher in communities that lack amenities like walkability, parks, green spaces, and gyms as well as those where people of lower socioeconomic class have less access to fresh foods (food deserts).

Also at a higher risk are people who live in locations where fast food restaurants are plentiful, as well as those who live in rural areas or areas lacking sidewalks and bike lanes.

Genetic

Obesity risk is influenced by a number of factors, including genetics. Depending on the study, genes account for 40% to 70% of the variance in body mass index.

Obesity is influenced by around 50 different genes. Rarely, gene mutations, primarily in the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R), are the lone cause of obesity, a condition known as monogenic obesity.

Biological

How your brain and body handle hunger and energy expenditure are other contributing factors to being overweight. The hormone leptin, for instance, is made in adipose (fat) cells, and its activity has been linked to body weight. The thalamus in the brain is where this hormone, critical for maintaining energy balance, exerts its effects on hunger and fullness.

Behavioral

Obesity is also influenced by one’s way of life. A diet heavy in saturated fats, salts, and sweets adds to the illness, along with a lack of sleep or exercise, smoking, and alcohol intake.

Both controllable and uncontrollable variables contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle; for example, consuming a lot of fast food or spending too much time in front of a screen. In addition, negative mental health influences eating and exercise habits, which contributes to weight gain associated with stress and other negative emotional states.

The use of a scale alone is insufficient for a diagnosis of obesity. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference measurement, physical exams, and lab tests to check for comorbidities are just some of the tools and diagnostic tests used in a comprehensive evaluation of a person’s weight status.

Self-Checks/At-Home Testing

Over the past four decades, obesity has escalated to become a critical problem all over the world. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warn that “obesity is a serious concern” since it is linked to worse mental health outcomes, lower quality of life, and the top causes of mortality in the United States and around the world.

The best approach to treating obesity is to catch it early and start doing something about it. Research shows that people are more successful at losing weight after receiving a diagnosis of obesity.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

The body mass index is the most popular tool used by doctors to make a diagnosis of obesity. To calculate a person’s body mass index (BMI), we divide their weight (in kilograms) by the square of their height (in meters).

Healthy weight for individuals aged 20 and up is defined as a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9.

Waist Circumference Measurement

If you fall anywhere between a healthy BMI and an overweight BMI, keeping an eye on your waist circumference may be helpful because it is a predictor of risk that stands on its own regardless of your overall weight.

At the very least once a year, you should check your waist size. A high-risk individual can screen for obesity by taking their own waist measurement. Waist circumference criteria are not valid for patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35, hence it is important to consider additional metrics (such as BMI) as well. Furthermore, waist circumference may not be an accurate measure of abdominal fat for people of different sexes, ages, and races.

Labs and Tests

Understanding the importance of getting a professional opinion when making a diagnosis of obesity in a child, adolescent, or adult is crucial.

Lab tests may be a part of the diagnostic process for overweight and obesity to determine the severity of the condition and rule out any underlying diseases. Your risk factors for obesity-related disorders and your existing symptoms will play a role in the laboratory tests your doctor orders.

Diagnosing Childhood Obesity

A doctor will compare a child’s weight and height to those of other children of the same age and gender to determine whether or not the youngster is obese. A child with a body mass index (BMI) that places him or her in the 90th percentile weighs more than 90 percent of children of the same age and sex.

Children who are overweight or obese can be identified using the CDC’s growth charts. An overweight child is one who falls between the 85th and 94th percentiles, while an obese child is one who falls between the 95th and 99th percentiles.

Differential Diagnosis

The weight of an individual is only one of many indicators that must be taken into account when making an accurate diagnosis of obesity. The difference between a correct diagnosis that leads to early intervention and a misdiagnosis of a person’s weight status can hinge on knowing what to expect and how to assure an accurate weight examination.

An unhealthy and excessive quantity of bodily fat is known as obesity. There is still much controversy about whether or not obesity is a disease, despite the fact that it affects slightly over 40% of the U.S. population.

For a long time, obesity was seen as something that people brought on themselves, but in 2013, the American Medical Association (AMA) officially recognized obesity as a chronic disease.

At issue is whether or not obesity is an illness that can be diagnosed and treated, rather than a product of a person’s own actions. Obesity is now considered an illness since it is linked to so many negative health outcomes.

This article provides an overview of obesity, including its description and classification, the risks of considering it as a matter of personal choice, its root causes, and the methods now used to treat and manage it.

Controversy Over

However, there are serious caveats to using BMI. The American Medical Association changed its mind on this instrument in 2023, citing its age, flaws, and troubled past. This is because BMI ignores critical criteria including race/ethnicity, age, gender, and body composition when determining obesity risk.

The American Medical Association (AMA) suggests that doctors take BMI into account along with other indicators of obesity such waist size and body fat percentage.

Brief History of Classifying Obesity

For a lot of people, a lot of the time, all across the world, being overweight was a sign of excellent health. Obesity, however, has been related to increased morbidity and mortality from various causes ever since the time of Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician who lived from 460 to 370 B.C.3 Our understanding of what constitutes obesity and how to categorize it has developed throughout time.

ALSO READ: What’s Treatment for Obesity Like?

Conventional wisdom held that poor dietary habits and an inactive lifestyle were the sole causes of obesity. However, medical boards and other health bodies began treating obesity as a chronic condition once the WHO made that declaration in 1997. A variety of environmental, genetic, biochemical, and behavioral factors are thought to contribute to this group of neurological illnesses.

The cultural zeitgeist is affected by the debate over whether obesity is a condition or an illness. There has been a growth in prejudice and generalizations about those who are overweight or obese in the United States. Incorrectly, being overweight is seen as a sign of laziness or lack of self-control.

Individuals who are overweight may internalize these biases and experience discrimination as a result. The stigma associated with it may cause people to eat more, not exercise, and suffer psychologically.

Some may think that by shaming somebody for being overweight, they might “pressure” them into reducing weight, however this may have unintended consequences. The treatment of obesity is hampered when it is seen as the result of a person’s own actions rather than as a condition caused by environmental variables.

Causes: How Do People Develop Obesity?

When a person consumes more calories (energy) than their body uses, they become overweight. Excess calories from fats, carbs, alcohol, and protein are all stored as triglycerides in adipose tissue if they are not consumed.

Adiposity (also known as body fat) is the result of this buildup over time. The kinds of meals and beverages you consume can also play a role in making you overweight.

Environmental

Your surroundings have a powerful impact on your weight, influencing both your eating habits and your level of physical activity. Obesity rates have been found to be higher in places with lower incomes, a lack of access to fresh foods (food deserts, areas where healthy food is scare), and a lack of walkability, parks, green spaces, and gyms.

People living in locations with lots of fast food restaurants, people who work long hours, and people who live in rural areas or areas without sidewalks and bike routes are all at a higher risk.

Your genetic makeup influences your risk for obesity in addition to environmental and lifestyle factors. Genes affect your metabolism and account for 40% to 70% of the weight variability, according to studies.

Obesity is associated with more than 50 genes. Monogenic obesity, wherein a single gene rather than multiple genes and environmental variables contribute to weight gain, occurs on extremely rare occasions and is typically caused by mutations in the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R).

Biological

How your brain and body handle hunger and energy expenditure are other contributing factors to being overweight. Adipose (fat) cells are responsible for producing the hormone leptin, and its activity has been linked to body weight. The thalamus in the brain is where this hormone, critical for maintaining energy balance, exerts its effects on hunger and fullness.

Behavioral

Obesity is exacerbated by a number of lifestyle factors. Saturated fats, salts, and sweets, along with a lack of sleep or exercise, smoking, and alcohol use, all contribute to the illness.

Both controllable and uncontrollable variables contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle; for example, consuming a lot of fast food or spending too much time in front of a screen. In addition, negative mental health influences eating and exercise habits, which can exacerbate stress and other negative emotional states.

Drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro are available for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. But you’ve probably heard of them because they’re constantly discussed in the media in relation to losing weight.

GLP-1 agonists are a relatively recent class of medications that includes Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, and Saxenda. Depending on the medicine, these once-weekly injections are the most effective diabetes and weight management treatments now on the market, resulting in average weight loss anywhere from 6% to 20%. The only FDA-approved drugs for weight loss are Wegovy and Saxanda.

Some of these medications have also been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing heart and kidney problems. They function differently from other weight reduction medications in that they reduce hunger, sluggish digestion, and quicken satiety.

The use of GLP-1 agonists is not without risk. Due to their mechanism of action, they frequently produce stomach upset, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and even constipation.

Demand rose after social media posts from celebrities who said they were using the medications to quickly shed pounds. At first, this caused Wegovy to become scarce. People started using Ozempic for purposes other than treating type 2 diabetes, making it a “off-label” drug.

There are still problems with the distribution network for these medicines. As a result, even for individuals with diabetes who are already taking the medicine, insurance companies are increasingly refusing claims.

Keep in mind that the excitement is well-earned. Over 40% of U.S. adults are obese, and another 30% are overweight, thus medications like semaglutide, which is found in both Ozempic and Wegovy, are both effective and important. Their increasing acceptance has opened the door to a new generation of weight loss medications.

Excess fat cells in the body are the root cause of obesity, a chronic illness. Having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher is commonly used as a definition, despite the limits of this metric.1 In 2020, 41.9% of U.S. adults were overweight or obese.

Because it increases the risk of multiple serious medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, obesity is now recognized as a true disease.

Organization whose mission is to prevent disease. The realities of adult obesity.

There is a plethora of treatment options available to assist with weight loss. Overweight patients can benefit from a variety of treatments, such as changes in diet and exercise habits, pharmaceuticals, surgical interventions, and more.

ALSO READ: Protein Only Helps In Muscle Development Myth Or Fact? Expert Reveals

To help you decide which treatment is best for you, this article will discuss them all.

Dietary Changes

The importance of dietary changes in facilitating weight loss cannot be overstated. When your caloric intake exceeds your energy expenditure, weight gain occurs. Your doctor may suggest making adjustments to your diet to lower the energy (calorie) density while still meeting your nutritional needs.3 If they feel that you would benefit from the services of a registered dietitian (RD), they may suggest one.

The Mediterranean and Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension (DASH) diets, both of which emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean protein, are two examples of evidence-based approaches to dietary patterns that a healthcare physician may recommend.

Physical Activity

Altering your diet and engaging in increased physical activity can contribute to weight loss. Therefore, in addition to dietary adjustments, doctors typically advise patients to start an exercise routine.

Walking or jogging at a brisk pace counts as moderate-intensity activity, and adults need 150 to 300 minutes of it each week. Another option is to engage in vigorous activity for 75–150 minutes per week, whether it be running, weightlifting, soccer, or jumping rope. Activities of low and high intensity can be combined.

Behavioral Modifications

Lifestyle improvements and the rejection of weight-related stigmas can be made easier with the help of behavioral modifications and therapy. How much you eat, how often you eat, and the emotions you connect with food all play a role in your weight. Weight loss, healthy eating, and exercise are all targets of behavioral modification treatment.6

Weight Loss Medications

Certain drugs may be prescribed by a doctor to aid in the management of obesity. They are ineffective if not combined with other strategies like changing one’s diet, getting more exercise, and changing one’s attitude. Several of these, such as Xenical (orlistat), Qsymia (phentermine-topiramate), and Contrave (naltrexone-bupropion), are sold in the United States.

Hormonal Treatment

When you feel full, your body sends a signal to your brain via hormones secreted in your intestines. Increasing these levels with injections, in conjunction with other therapies, can decrease calorie intake and modify dietary preferences. In the United States, hormone therapies including Saxenda (liraglutide), Wegovy (semaglutide), and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are now approved.

Surgery

When alternative treatments for obesity have failed, a doctor may suggest surgery as an option. Obesity surgeries may cause calorie restriction by decreasing the quantity of food that can be digested at one sitting. Gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, and gastric band operations, in addition to dietary and activity improvements, can result in significant weight loss.

Devices

with order to aid with weight loss, doctors will surgically implant a number of gadgets to limit food intake. Several FDA-approved devices in the United States function in a manner analogous to that of gastric bypass operations. As an alternative to more invasive surgical procedures, many people choose weight loss aids, and if their goals change, they may often be removed or the process reversed.

In the United States, childhood obesity rates are rising. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia show that “the number of children and adolescents with obesity has more than tripled since the 1970s.”

There are a number of variables that must be considered while attempting to treat pediatric obesity.

Medical issues (such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other obesity-related illnesses) that emerge simultaneously with the child’s age

Possible methods of treating childhood obesity are:

Alterations to the kid’s feeding routine

An uptick in the kid’s level of physical activity

Surgery or medication for weight loss (under certain conditions).

Behavioural therapy

What Is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

The body mass index (BMI) is widely used to diagnose and monitor obesity in children, adolescents, and adults. Using the child’s height and weight ratio, the BMI calculates the child’s fat content. A child’s BMI is used by their physician (or other healthcare professional) to determine where they stand on the growth chart.

The body mass index has been around for a while, but it’s an old and inaccurate method. It ignores individual differences in anatomy, culture, sexuality, and age.

The medical community continues to use BMI despite its bias because it is a rapid and cheap approach to assess a patient’s health and prospective outcomes.

Parent-Only (PO) Treatment

The best results in treating pediatric obesity have been connected to interventions that incorporate all of these aspects.

Researchers looked at outcomes with and without children in therapy to determine if they were as important to the treatment process.

ALSO READ: Amsterdam Escapade: A 5-Day Dutch Adventure

In terms of the key therapy modalities (nutrition, education, and behavioral re-enforcing techniques), the results demonstrated that parent-only (PO) treatment programs were equal to those that involved both the parent and the kid.

The research team stated, “Overall, this project suggests that a PO [parent-only] treatment could provide similar results to PC [parent and child treatment] in child weight loss and other relevant outcomes, and potentially could be more cost-effective and easier to disseminate.”

Multi-Disciplinary Treatment

Using a multi-pronged strategy, researchers in 2015 found a significant reduction in body mass index (BMI) among children who had undergone extensive treatment for obesity.

Advice on what to eat

Instruction in Physical Activity

Behavior modification and exercise instruction in a group setting

Psychological consultations and treatments

Group physical activity sessions conducted by a physiotherapist (a specialist in physical activity) Weekly in-home coaching to help locate play places for children and assist in removing low-nutrient items from the home environment

Weight Loss Surgery

Adolescents, but not younger kids, can get surgery to help them lose weight. The risks associated with weight reduction surgery are similar to those associated with other surgical procedures. Surgery may be less dangerous than obesity in the long run for teenagers who are unable to lose weight and reduce their body mass index through dietary and lifestyle adjustments.

The teenager will discuss the possibility of surgical weight loss with their doctor. A pediatric endocrinologist (who specializes in disorders like diabetes) or dietitian may be contacted as well.

Adolescents who have tried everything else without success may find some initial success with weight loss surgery, but this is only a starting point. In the long run, you’ll need to commit to a healthy eating plan and an exercise routine.

General Tips for Parents

A healthcare physician who has determined that a child or adolescent is overweight will likely provide a diet and set of goals for greater activity and healthy weight loss.

Most experts agree on the following set of guidelines:It is the parents’ responsibility to decide what and when their children eat, not the kids’.

Eat lots of fresh produce, lean protein, healthy fats (like avocados and olive oil), and whole grains to maintain good health.

Remove from the diet: foods high in saturated and trans fats, sugary baked goods, high caloric/high sugar drinks (fruit juice included), processed foods, and fried foods.

Fresh fruits, nuts, and high-fiber whole foods (like popcorn) are examples of nutritious snack options.

When feasible, parents should eat at home and steer clear of eateries, especially fast food joints.

Family meals should be relaxed occasions where parents and kids can talk freely to one another.

Children shouldn’t be allowed to snack in front of the TV or other electronic devices (including cellphones and tablets). The Mayo Clinic warns against eating in front of screens, as it might lead to rapid eating and overeating.
