Good oral hygiene, regular dental cleanings, and professional teeth whitening are the most effective methods for obtaining whiter teeth. However, did you realize that certain foods can also help whiten your teeth?

Here is a list of seven food and drinks That Whiten Teeth and Improve Oral Health.

Top 7 Foods and Drinks That Whiten Teeth and Improve Oral Health

1. Strawberries

Strawberries contain a high concentration of malic acid, which is commonly found in certain types of toothpaste. Malic acid functions as a natural astringent and aids in the removal of tooth discoloration.

It is essential to note that strawberries contain citric acid, which weakens enamel. Therefore, you should delay at least 30 minutes before brushing your teeth after consuming strawberries and other acidic foods.

2. Apples, Celery and Carrots

Apples, celery, and carrots are crunchy fruits and vegetables that can remove plaque and bacteria, stimulate saliva production, and provide vitamin and mineral sources that strengthen teeth.

3. Leafy Greens

Folic acid (also known as vitamin B9), which is essential for cell growth and repair, is found in leafy greens such as spinach, romaine lettuce, and kale. Folic acid can reduce inflammation in the gums and make teeth more resistant to plaque and bacteria.

4. Cheese

When enamel erodes due to acidic and sugary foods, parched mouth, and other factors, the underlying dentin may become exposed, causing your teeth to appear yellower. The calcium in cheese strengthens tooth enamel and bones. Casein, a type of protein found in cheese, serves an important role in repairing tooth enamel. Additionally, the act of chewing (cheese) increases salivation, which helps displace pathogens in the mouth and keep the mouth clean. Choose aged, soft-ripened, and blue cheeses while avoiding processed cheeses (such as American and nacho cheese).

5. Sugar-free Gum

Chewing sugar-free gum between meals and munchies stimulates salivation and aids in neutralizing and rinsing away the acids that form in the mouth as food breaks down. This protects your teeth, promotes excellent oral health, and maintains their cleanliness.

6. Water

Saliva, which consists of approximately 99 percent water, is essential to dental health. Water displaces sugary beverages that erode tooth enamel and induce cavities. In addition, water contains proteins and minerals (such as fluoride) that prevent dental decay and gum disease by protecting tooth enamel and preventing tooth decay. To maintain a whiter, livelier smile, rinse your mouth with water after consuming pigment-rich foods or liquids.

7. Baking Soda

If you ever run out of toothpaste, baking soda is a suitable substitute. Due to its alkalinity and moderate abrasiveness, baking soda helps remove plaque and discoloration from the surface of teeth. Brush your teeth for two minutes with a paste made from baking soda and water.

Fruits and vegetables have beneficial effects not only on your overall health, but also on your teeth! Certain fruits can even cause tooth decay due to their acidic or sugary content. However, there are some fruits that improve oral health and taste great. By consuming these three fruits, you can enhance your oral health.

Apples

Eating pears can aid in tooth cleansing and freshen breath. Apples’ fibrous content cleans teeth by functioning as a toothbrush to remove plaque from teeth and other food particles. The acidity of an apple kills the microorganisms responsible for bad breath. Leave the apple’s skin intact, as it contains fiber that is beneficial to oral health and helps keep teeth and gums clean.

Kiwi

Kiwi is frequently misidentified as a citrus fruit, but it is actually a berry. Calcium, a supermineral for teeth, is abundant in kiwis, and they also contain fiber. Calcium neutralizes corrosive substances and strengthens the enamel’s defenses.

Strawberries

Strawberries, another fibrous berry, are excellent for teeth and gums. Strawberries are loaded with vitamin C, which aids in the body’s production of collagen, an essential protein for sustaining the health of your gums. A half cup of strawberries, or between four and six berries, provides approximately 70% of the daily vitamin C requirement.

Remember: Limit Citrus & Rinse with Water

Citrate-rich foods and beverages erode tooth enamel through a process known as demineralization. In severe cases of demineralization, acid will reach the dentin, the delicate layer beneath the enamel. These advanced cases result in sensitivity and discomfort in the teeth. Rinse your mouth with water for 30 seconds after consuming something with a high citric acid content to remove some of the acid.

1. Fruits That Don’t Stick to Your Teeth

Apples, pears, and grapes are the best fruits for your pearly whites because they don’t adhere to your teeth, according to Nammy Patel, DDS, of Green Dentistry in San Francisco. “As long as the food doesn’t stick to your teeth, you’re fine,” she explains.

Bananas are an example of a fruit that will adhere to your teeth, according to Dr. Patel. The presence of food in the crevices and spaces between teeth provides oral bacteria with food to flourish, which can increase your risk for tooth decay and cavities.

She claims that these fruits do not truly clean your teeth. Therefore, they cannot remove plaque that has formed or already exists during the day. You must use your trusted toothbrush to thoroughly clean your teeth.

2. Fruits That Keep You Full

Apples and pears are also excellent for your health due to their high fiber content. According to the USDA, a medium apple contains 5 grams of fiber and a medium pear contains 6 grams of fiber. And fiber is a master at keeping you satisfied.

“When you consume satiating foods, you are less likely to snack throughout the day,” explains Dr. Patel. She explains that this maintains the pH of your mouth lower, resulting in fewer cavities.

While grapes will not adhere to your teeth, they lack fiber. One cup of grapes contains only one gram of fiber. You know your body and what foods make you feel full the best, but apples and pears may be more effective than other fruits at keeping you full.

The most tooth-healthy dietary pattern? “Eating three meals per day and two apples for snacks is preferable to grazing all day,” says Dr. Patel.

One unexpected advantage of consuming more fruits like apples and pears is that they may improve periodontal health.

But, you argue, fruit contains sugar — it’s called nature’s treat for a reason. Wouldn’t that be detrimental to your oral health?

So, consider this: In a randomized study published in January 2018 in BDJ Open, 30 healthy participants were divided into two groups. One added fruit while the other added nuts to their nutrition.

In spite of the fact that those in the fruit group consumed more fructose (a form of sugar found in fruit) than those in the nut group, their gums became healthier over the course of the two-month study.

It may have something to do with the micronutrients in these foods, as previous research indicates that consuming fruits and vegetables is linked to stronger gums.

Here are some disclaimers: First, 30 participants is a tiny sample size, and the results will need to be replicated with a larger sample size. Second, they were urged to consume large quantities of each fruit. Similar to seven pears for a 140-pound individual. It is unlikely that you consume that much food at home.

Still, consuming one or two apples per day is harmless and may even strengthen your smile.
