Selected Miss Universe Erica Robin, hailing from Karachi, Pakistan was selected as one of five finalists at the inaugural Miss Universe competition held in the Maldives. She is currently preparing to attend the finals of the pageant in El Salvador in November. This achievement will be momentous, as it signifies Pakistan’s first selection of a representative in the 72-year history of the Miss Universe beauty pageant. Erica’s response when asked what one thing she wished to accomplish for her nation was, “I wish to dispel the notion that Pakistan is a backward nation.”

On Twitter, models, writers, and journalists, including journalist Mariana Babar, lauded Erica as “beauty and intelligence.” However, the Jamaat-e-Islami party’s Senator Mushtaq Ahmed referred to the event as “shameful,” and caretaker prime minister Anwar ul-Haq Kakar directed the nation’s intelligence agency to investigate the individuals responsible for organizing the Miss Universe Pakistan competition, specifically those who appeared to represent the country without obtaining official government authorization. This transpired subsequent to a vitriolic discourse on social media platforms, wherein detractors claimed that Erica was representing a nation that did not wish to be represented. Kakar, meanwhile, condemned the Maldives pageant’s organization as a “horrendous deed” and a “insult and exploitation of the women of Pakistan.”

Pakistani Islamic scholar Taqi Usmani tweeted, “Five young women have been selected to represent Pakistan in the international pageant for beauty.” How far shall we proceed if this hypothesis proves to be accurate? “Perish the impression, if you will.” Ansar Abbasi, a columnist and right-wing commentator from Pakistan, questioned who sanctioned the participation of five Pakistani females in the Miss Universe pageant. Does Prime Minister Kakar (@anwaar_kakar) consider this a cabinet or ministerial advisor decision? Whoever may represent Pakistan without the consent of the Pakistani government may do so. In response, Murtaza Solangi, the present Federal Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting and a former journalist, stated, “State and government institutions represent the government and the state of Pakistan, respectively. No non-state or non-governmental organization or person has been designated by our government to engage in such activities, and no such entity or person can ultimately represent the state or government.

In Pakistan, which is dominated by Muslims, beauty contests are uncommon. Erica stated in a BBC interview, “It is an honor to represent Pakistan.” Nonetheless, I am baffled as to the source of the backlash. I believe it is the notion that I would parade around a room full of males in a swimsuit.” Erica, who graduated from Government College of Commerce and Economics and St Patrick’s High School, commenced her professional modeling career in January 2020. Several publications, including Diva Magazine Pakistan, published her photographs.

She asserted she had committed no wrongdoing and stated, “By representing Pakistan on a global stage, I am not in violation of any laws.” “I am making an effort to dispel any preconceived notions that may exist regarding it.” She had further stated in an interview with Voice of America, “I will refrain from undertaking any actions that could damage the nation’s reputation.”

Pakistan’s interim Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Friday raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in his address to the UN General Assembly, saying that Kashmir is the key to peace between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Pakistan consistently raises the issue of Jammu and Kashmir at various UN forums, regardless of the meeting’s agenda or topic of discussion.

In his address to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly’s General Debate, Kakar stated that Pakistan desires peaceful and productive relations with all of its neighbors, including India.

He stated, “Kashmir is the key to harmony between Pakistan and India.”

“Peace and development are interdependent. Pakistan is located in the world’s least economically integrated region. Pakistan believes that regions grow together, so it seeks tranquil and productive relations with all of its neighbors, including India, he said.

Kakar stated that the United Nations Security Council must ensure the implementation of its Kashmir resolutions and that the United Nations Military Observer Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) must be “reinforced.”

“Global powers must persuade New Delhi to embrace Pakistan’s offer of mutual restraint on strategic and conventional weapons,” he stated.

India has informed Pakistan that it desires normal neighborly relations in the absence of terrorism, hostility, and violence.

Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were, are, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India, as New Delhi has repeatedly emphasized.

India has also urged Pakistan to address its domestic issues instead of bringing up the Kashmir dispute and leveling baseless accusations against New Delhi.

On August 5, 2019, New Delhi abrogated Article 370 of the Constitution to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

Regarding Afghanistan, Kakar stated that stability is a strategic imperative for Pakistan.

“Pakistan shares the worries of the rest of the world about Afghanistan, especially when it comes to the rights of women and girls.” However, we support continuing to provide humanitarian help to the poor people of Afghanistan, especially Afghan girls and women, who are the most at risk. We also support bringing the Afghan economy back to life and putting the connectivity projects with Central Asia into action, he said.

“The most important thing for Pakistan is to stop and fight all forms of terrorism from and within Afghanistan.” Pakistan is against the terrorist acts that the TTP, Daesh, and other groups working out of Afghanistan have done across the border in Pakistan. To stop these strikes, we have asked Kabul to help and work with us. But we are also doing what we need to do to stop this crime that is being supported from outside our country, he said.

As Pakistan continues to face economic difficulties, the International Monetary Fund has made it more difficult for the country to manage by rejecting any proposal for tariff adjustments or additional subsidies, Geo News reported.

This occurred despite claims by authorities that August bill collection was in line with expectations.

Pakistan has requested that upcoming quarterly tariff adjustments (QTAs) and Fuel Price Adjustments (FPAs) of (PKR) 7.50 per unit be staggered over the next four to six months, Geo News reported, citing a report from The News International. This is in response to the IMF’s serious objections to the government’s proposal to provide relief to the poor against inflated power bills.

“However, Pakistan has requested the IMF to stagger the implementation of the QTA and FPA over a period of four to six months, so it may also require some additional costs on which both parties will have to agree,” confirmed top official sources to The News.

Despite QTA’s mandate to raise rates by (PKR) 5 per unit in the current month and FPAs by (PKR) 2.72 per unit, the electricity sector’s problems have persisted, according to the sources. In total, a price increase of over 7 (PKR) per unit is anticipated. According to Geo News, citing The News, the QTAs will be calculated using losses from the April-June period as a consequence of lower unit consumption, cost escalation of interest payments, and exchange rate fluctuations.

Pakistan increased the base rate for electricity by 7.5 Pakistani Rupees (PKR) per unit at the beginning of July due to the country’s economic crisis.

According to ARY News, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) authorized the federal government to increase the base electricity tariff by PKR 4.96/unit on July 14.

In addition, Dawn reported that Pakistan’s provisional government has already requested the power regulator to begin charging an additional PKR 5.40 per unit quarterly tariff adjustment over six winter months beginning in October, as opposed to the permitted three months.

As a result of the IMF program, current depreciation accounts for nearly 70 percent of the current power tariff, and the government has no control options available at this time. In addition, a 10-12% increase in interest rates is expected, and the government and the SBP’s hands are bound by the fund program.

Thursday, nine soldiers were slain in a volatile region of western Pakistan when a suicide bomber rammed his motorcycle into their military convoy and detonated it, according to the army and officials.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in neighboring Afghanistan two years ago, there has been a dramatic increase in border region assaults in Pakistan.

A motorcycle-borne suicide bomber detonated himself 61 kilometers (38 miles) from the frontier in Pakistan’s Bannu district, according to the army’s media arm.

The border region has long been a hotbed of militant activity, with hardline groups such as Pakistan’s homegrown Taliban group, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), using the largely unpoliced border to elude detection and stage attacks.

“The suicide bomber was riding a motorcycle and rammed his bike into a truck in a military convoy,” provincial minister Feroze Jamal Shah told AFP.

The Pakistani army stated that five additional soldiers were injured in the attack near the town of Jani Khel, but Shah placed the number at twenty.

Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, caretaker prime minister, described the incident as “a cowardly terrorist act.”

The TTP is the greatest menace in the region, and Islamabad claims that its fighters have found refuge in Afghanistan.

The group has waged a campaign against security personnel, including police officers, in recent months.

In January, a suicide bomber with ties to the TTP blew himself up in a mosque inside a police compound in Peshawar, northwest Pakistan, murdering more than 80 officers.

The Islamic State group has also been active in the country, claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing at a political party gathering last month that killed at least 54 people, including 23 minors.

Pakistan was once plagued by near-daily bombings, but beginning in 2014, a significant military clearance operation in the former tribal areas restored order to a large extent.

After the passage of legislation in 2018, the seven bordering Afghanistan districts, including Bannu, were brought under the jurisdiction of Pakistani authorities.

The return of Taliban authorities to Afghanistan, according to analysts, has emboldened militants in the formerly tribal regions.

In the meantime, Pakistan is dealing with a deteriorating security situation, an economic decline, and political turmoil, with elections for a new government scheduled for the coming months, but no official date yet established.

Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif invitesTurkey to join the ambitious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on Wednesday, transforming it into a trilateral arrangement so that all three cordial nations could reap its benefits.

Sharif made these remarks during the christening of the fourth MILGEM-class corvette warship PNS Tariq, which was inducted into the Pakistan Navy fleet at the Karachi Shipyard.

Initiated in 2018, the MILGEM project envisioned the construction of two corvettes in Pakistan and two in Turkey for the Pakistan Navy. Vice President of Turkey Cevdet Yilmaz also attended the ceremony.

Shehbaz stated that turning the multibillion-dollar infrastructure project into a trilateral agreement would bring regional prosperity and empower people through the finest facilities, including education and health care.

The prime minister emphasised, “I believe all three countries can benefit from the potential of the CPEC, which has been a tremendous success.”

Pakistan and China describe their relationship as “all-weather,” whereas Pakistan and Turkey, both Muslim-majority countries, have close bilateral ties.

Sharif also emphasised the need to connect Karachi’s Port Qasim to the CPEC-built Gwadar port in Balochistan.

Pakistan needed to establish linkages between the Karachi and Gwadar ports because Gwadar was about to become a business hub for the country as well as the region, as a result of the increasing demand on Port Qasim in Karachi.

The CPEC is an ambitious USD 60 billion project that, according to Islamabad, will transform Pakistan by improving its infrastructure, energy, industrialization, socioeconomic development requirements, and people’s standard of living.

The CPEC is a route of infrastructure projects spanning 3,000 kilometres between the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in China’s northwest and the Gwadar Port in the western Pakistani province of Balochistan.

India has objected to China’s construction of the CPEC pipeline through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The Uttar Pradesh Police announced on Wednesday that they had recovered two video cassettes, four mobile phones, five Pakistan-authorized passports, an unused passport with an incomplete name and address, and an identity card from Pakistani national Seema Ghulam Haider, who illegally entered India via Nepal with her four children to be with her boyfriend Sachin Meena.

In a statement shared by the news agency ANI, the Uttar Pradesh director general of police (DGP) office detailed the investigative findings of the Anti-Terrorist Squad. Haider and her associate Sachin Meena were interrogated for two consecutive days by the UP ATS, with Intelligence Bureau representatives also present.

According to UP ATS, Seema’s spouse travelled to Saudi Arabia for employment in 2019. He used to send his wife between 70,000 and 80,000 Pakistani rupees per month to cover household costs. Seema was able to purchase a 12-million-Pakistani-rupee home with the assistance of her in-laws, husband, and father-in-law, as well as her extended family, whom she had saved money from various sources. However, after three months of ownership, she sold her home to travel to India to be with her partner.

Seema flew on a tourist visa from Karachi Airport to Sharjah Airport and then to Kathmandu on March 10. In the interim, Sachin Meena arrived in Gorakhpur on March 8, followed by Kathmandu two days later. There, he signed into a hotel and reserved a room. He picked up Seema from the airport, and the two of them spent seven days there.

Seema obtained a tourist visa and travelled to Dubai with her four children Farhan alias Raj (7 12 years), Farwah alias Priyanka (6 12 years), Fariha alias Pari (5 years), and Munni (3 years) two months later. The following day, she flew to Kathmandu and arrived in the Himalayan nation of Pokhra on May 11. She spent the night in a hotel with her children.

According to the UP ATS, Seema boarded a bus from Pokhra to the Khunwa frontier in Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh, and entered India. She travelled to Lucknow, Agra, and Gautambuddha Nagar, where Sachin rented a room in Rabupura, on May 13. The police have stated that Seema Haider will be punished for illegally accessing Indian territory.

Pakistan forex crises:In light of Pakistan’s diminishing forex reserves, the government has been pressing for airport operations to be outsourced. Dawn reports that the minister of finance has already convened multiple meetings of the committee created to engage foreign operators for outsourcing.

According to Dawn, citing sources, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar instructed stakeholders to finalise formalities to outsource the operations of Islamabad International Airport (IIA) by August 12, the last day of the current government’s tenure.

Dawn is a Pakistani national newspaper that covers Pakistani politics and current events.

On Saturday, the minister presided over a meeting of the steering committee to assess the progress of airport operations outsourcing.

Dawn reported that a source with knowledge of the meeting informed her that the committee had given explicit instructions to complete the essential procedures for IIA outsourcing as a top priority.

The World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC), the transaction counsel for the outsourcing, updated the meeting on its progress, according to an official statement issued after the meeting.

Dar desires changes to aviation laws to be authorised by the end of the month. Dawn reported that the meeting agreed to expedite IIA’s outsourcing to enhance service delivery in accordance with best industry practises.

The IFC also presented to the committee, which also made decisions regarding the future outsourcing roadmap for IIA operations.

The Economic Coordination Committee decided on March 31 to initiate the 25-year outsourcing of airport operations and land assets in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. To generate foreign exchange, their functions will be managed through a public-private partnership.

Dar also provided departments with a deadline for finalising amendments to civil aviation laws and a restructuring plan for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), according to Dawn.

The amendments are being made to separate the roles of the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, the Pakistan International Airlines, and the Airports Security Force. By enacting ordinances, the goal is to eliminate overlapping responsibilities of these organisations.

The minister emphasised having amendments authorised by the legislature by July’s end. This timeline is essential because it would allow global aviation regulators to dispatch inspectors in August to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of operational systems and standards required to restore PIA’s flights to the United States, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Dawn reported that failure to achieve this deadline would result in a one-year delay before the inspections occur.

Due to a controversy surrounding pilots’ professional degrees and other aircraft safety standards, PIA has suspended flights to these destinations beginning in 2020.

Dawn reported that the Hindu community in Karachi awoke on Saturday to discover their 150-year-old holy shrine Mari Mata Temple demolished in Soldier Bazaar.

According to eyewitnesses, the operation occurred late on Friday night while the area lacked electricity. When they arrived, the diggers and bulldozers completed the task. They demolished the entire interior structure but preserved the outer ramparts and the main gate.

According to Dawn, residents reported seeing a police vehicle providing ‘cover’ for the individuals operating the bulldozers and other equipment.

Dawn is a Pakistani tabloid that was first published in 1941.

They claim that the Mari Mata Temple is located on Mukhi Chohitram Road, very close to the Soldier Bazaar police station.

Shri Ram Nath Mishra Maharaj of the nearby Shri Panch Mukhi Hanuman Mandir, another very ancient temple, informed Dawn, “It is a very ancient Mandir.”

Additionally, he stated, “It was reportedly constructed over 150 years ago. We have also heard tales of ancient treasures concealed in its courtyard,” adding that it spanned between 400 and 500 square yards and that the encroachers had been eyeing it for some time, as reported by Dawn.

“The Mandir was under the management of the Madarsi Hindu community of Karachi, and since it was said that it was a very old and dangerous structure that could collapse at any moment, the Mandir management reluctantly but temporarily relocated the majority of their deities to a small room near the storm water train until they could renovate the structure,” he added.

He added, “However, the Mari Mata Mandir was just destroyed last night.”

Meanwhile, a member of the Madrasi Hindu group claimed that Imran Hashmi and Rekha AKA Nagin Bai were forcing them to flee. There was also talk of the two individuals selling the temple to a third party for 70 million Pakistani Rupees (PKR), with the purchasers intending to construct a commercial structure there. There was also mention of fraudulent documents in the name of a specific Navaid, which facilitated the conversion of the amenity plot’s lease to a commercial lease.
