The Narendra Modi government has put in place a new food security plan that will start on January 1, 2023. Based on a decision made by the cabinet last week, the government plans to give 81.35 crore NFSA beneficiaries free food grains in 2023.

Under the scheme, the government of India will give free food grains to all NFSA beneficiaries, such as Antyodaya Ann Yojana (AAY) households and Priority Household (PHH) persons, for the next year through a network of 5.33 lakhs Fair Price Shops all over the country.

The new integrated scheme will replace two current food subsidy programmes run by the Department of Food and Public Distribution: (a) Food Subsidy to FCI for NFSA and (b) Food Subsidy for decentralised procurement states, which deal with the procurement, allocation, and delivery of free foodgrains to the states under NFSA.

A cabinet release said that the Scheme would also make sure that the National Food Security Act (NFSA) was used in an effective and uniform way.

“The government of India has a social and legal obligation to give the people of the country a dignified life. It does this by making sure they have access to food and nutritional security by making sure there are enough good food grains available. “To keep this promise to the most vulnerable 67% of the population, or 81.35 crore people, who are covered by NFSA, the cabinet decided to launch a new Central Sector scheme to fulfil the vision of “One Nation, One Price, One Ration,” according to a release from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution.

The government said that the decision would make it easier for poor people to get food grains and make them more affordable and available.

Free foodgrains will also make sure that One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) works the same way everywhere in the country and will strengthen this choice-based platform. For the year 2023, the Central Government will pay a food subsidy of more than Rs. 2 Lakh crore. A cabinet release said that the goal of the new scheme is to make sure that food security under the NFSA is clear and consistent at the beneficiary level.

Also, an order is given for all General Managers of FCI to visit three ration shops every day from January 1, 2023, to January 7, 2023, in different parts of their area of responsibility and send a report to the DFPD Nodal Officer every day in the format given for review and corrective action.

In light of the free food grains, an advisory is also sent to the States/UTs about how to provide Dealer’s Margin so that food grains can be given to the beneficiaries.
