Somehow, a minor argument escalated into a big one. It became unmanageable as the intensity kept climbing. A vicious struggle has ensued, and you have both fired your shots. You find yourself standing in the kitchen as she has fled to her bedroom, leaving you to face the devastation and smoke. It’s incredible how isolating being at home can seem. The pain is constant and relentless until it’s gone, but your whole being begs you not to go. Your only want is to curl up on the couch with a pillow and blanket. Doing it is the simplest part. The simplest option isn’t necessarily the best, especially when it comes to marriage.

We males have been socialized to believe that success comes first. Typically, when we win, it’s because we force someone to do what we want them to or because we score more points than they do. Achieving more intimacy with one’s partner is the ultimate goal of every married couple. What this signifies is that our spouses are made to feel safe, cared for, heard, and appreciated. Acquire your wife’s affection, not a debate. When we were dating our spouses, it was simpler to go to such lengths, but now that we’re married, it’s game over. When times are good, your love for your wife is easy to see, but when times are tough, your love for her becomes clear. It will be disastrous for everyone involved if you both go to sleep without expressing regret, therefore you should talk to her right away.

1. Focus on the Relationship.

When it comes to relationships, being right is more essential than being right in a disagreement. Never lose sight of the end objective. Show your caring for each other more than you show your side of the argument; this doesn’t imply you can’t disagree.

2. Apologize First.

“The stronger person always apologizes first,” was a common saying of a mentor and friend. Words cannot express how much strength is required to apologize because it is the most difficult thing to do.

3. 90-10 Rule.

Hall of Fame NFL player Steve Largent taught me this rule. A dispute can only be started by two people. Regardless of your desire to acknowledge it or not, you have undoubtedly done something wrong during the debate. Perhaps they’re 90% incorrect and you’re 10% incorrect. Be the first to own up to your 10% before you expect someone else to do the same for 90% of the time.

4. Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Your Anger.

Giving anger a place to remain at night greatly increases the likelihood that it will develop into bitterness. It may be best to address the issue in the morning, but dealing with rage should be done immediately. Put down your weapons and make amends.

5. Pray for the Person.

When you pray, you put yourself in a better mental state. Praying this way leaves room for God to bless the other person with understanding, serenity, and compassion.

I was asked by a friend whether there was anything I had done recently that would annoy my wife. I had merely arranged for flowers to be brought to her at the time, so I hadn’t disturbed her either. Not a big deal. I longed to express my affection for her. In my mind, I was much ahead of everyone else. Perhaps I showed too much confidence. I usually end up flat on my face at that point. It should have been obvious to me. She posed a straightforward inquiry when her phone rang. A tense day was intensified tenfold since I failed to advise her of a crucial piece of information. She was distressed.

Sincerity

No matter how sincere you are, your wife can tell. More introspection is required if you are not sincere. Apologize not merely to end the argument or because you think it’s the proper thing to do. A sense of conviction is required. Till it comes, you should think, and maybe even pray.

Humility

Put her where she can make a difference. Make sure to incorporate your body language and tone into this as well as your words. Make her worth and dignity more important than your ego. You probably got down on one knee when you asked for someone’s hand in marriage. Perform this symbolic action with each and every apology.

Ask for Forgiveness

“Will you forgive me?” is the real question you should ask. You leave yourself up to harm when you do this. Your question is an invitation for her to get back on the correct path with you. It restores harmony and unity among all people.

Regret

When we offend our wives, we can react in one of two ways: by feeling guilty or by trying to explain it away. One fosters personal development. On the other hand, it condemns us to make the same mistakes in the future. A person’s conscience can be raised by one and destroyed by the other.

Empathy

Try to see things from her perspective. See if you can figure out how she feels and why. Accompany her there. She likely feels the most isolated of all. Tell her that’s not the case.

Day two of our honeymoon was a tumultuous one for my wife and me since I refused to dance with her. While we were in the beach town, she had a sweet desire to dance with me. Guitars strumming sweetly accompanied the glorious skies as the morning progressed. She married an introverted jerk who was more concerned with what other people thought of her than with her own actions, but my wife had no idea. In my awkwardness about dancing, I managed to annoy my new bride instead of making her happy. As a married couple, this was the first time we had a disagreement.

Disputes arise in every marriage. Disagreement, when managed well, may bring people closer together. But if you want to avoid fighting at all costs, you risk sowing the seeds of animosity, drifting away, and becoming more passive. The first walls appear. My wife didn’t try to avoid arguments throughout our honeymoon, which is a relief. Because of her, we were able to lay a firm groundwork for our marriage. What matters is how you deal with conflicts. Here are three destructive strategies for avoiding marital strife.

1. Stay silent.

In an effort to keep the peace, many husbands choose to remain silent. Some men I know who have been married for a long time don’t say anything. They remain silent when asked for their views. Be strong and independent; don’t be a helpless spouse who lets his wife walk all over him.

Avoiding arguments by being silent just invites miscommunication and, worse, resentment from your partner. Get the ball rolling instead of sitting on your hands. It may be necessary to begin by apologizing and expressing your intention to strengthen your marriage if you have been silent for an extended period. If this describes you, it’s time to lay out a strategy for having that difficult conversation with your wife.

2. Stay separate.

Separation is a common occurrence for married couples. It is not a marriage if the only reason you are together is to avoid each other. Marriage, in my opinion, should be more like a close friendship than a living arrangement. Throw out tomorrow’s trash with the tired cliche about the hubby dozing off on the couch.

It is your duty to seek out your wife, not to remain apart in the hope of rescuing the marriage. Get back together as friends if you’ve been estranged for some time. Your concern for your wife can be conveyed even in the midst of an argument. Rather of arguing only to argue, focus on how your disagreements might strengthen your marriage. If you want to keep the peace in your relationship, you need to know how to deal with arguments. You should start tackling your conflicts directly when you start acting separately. The point isn’t to hide away and pretend everything is fine; rather, it’s to overcome difficulties as a team and emerge stronger than before.

3. Hide stuff.

Confession is better than concealing. Have you made a decision on your finances? Is it an unhealthy bond between coworkers? Tell the truth. A buddy of mine told me the truth about his affair, which he had kept secret from his wife for a long time. During a one-on-one meal, he began to spill the beans about his family. My acquaintance instead of being forthright from the start chose to keep a thousand little things hidden from his wife. The marriage is going in the wrong direction if either partner feels the need to hide anything, even the slightest communication. To avoid conflict, it’s not enough to just cease hiding things. Tell the truth about your actions and promise to do the same going forward.

My wife told me, “Even when you’re here, you’re not here,” in response to my question about her job frustrations. Since it gave me a lot of leeway, I was able to be home most nights and never miss a major event. However, she identified the issue with her comment, which still makes me cringe. My demeanor, rather than my actions, was the problem.

Though we frequently reprimand our children for their attitudes, we tend to forget how crucial it is to do the same for ourselves. Whether we want it to or not, our attitudes in marriage affect the quality of our relationship. Your marriage is suffering because of these 5 understated attitudes.

1. Busyness

You would probably all respond with “I’m busy” if I were to survey everyone who read this article. Although having a lot of things to do is one thing, having a busy mentality is something entirely else. What this means is that doing things all the time gives your life purpose. Because of this, it may become difficult to give one’s whole attention to anything or anyone. When we want to become close to our wives, it’s essential to just be there for them.

Take steps to consciously slow down in your marriage if you find that being busy is one of your attitudes. For example, commit to putting away your phone for a certain amount of time each night, set aside 30 minutes for dinner, or practice asking questions and patiently waiting for her to answer.

2. Laziness

Laziness is the polar opposite of busyness. Laziness isn’t something most of us would say describes ourselves. We put in long hours both at work and at home. Supporting our families is our top priority, so we work hard. But occasionally a sluggish attitude sets in when it comes to our interactions with our wives. Perhaps you’ve been married for some time and tend to skip the less culturally significant anniversaries. Maybe planning dates has become so inconvenient that you’ve given up.

However, nothing positive emerges from emptiness. If sloth is one of your marital attitudes, you can end up making your partnership unhealthy and unfit. Make an effort. Exceed expectations. Impress her with an innovative approach. You will witness remarkable positive changes in your marriage if you combat the attitude of sloth.

3. Fearfulness

Just what is it that scares you? You don’t want to let your wife down, do you? As a husband and father, do you worry that you may fail? Do you secretly worry that you won’t have enough money to take care of your loved ones? You will be controlled by your fears. However, you won’t even realize it’s controlling you. Plus, this has the potential to ruin a marriage.

ALSO READ: Importance of Physical Fitness

Make an appointment with a counselor or keep a journal if you feel that dread is influencing your attitude toward marriage. Make an effort to recognize your fears. The first step in overcoming fear is realizing their existence.

“I don’t get it. You’re getting so worked up over what seemed like a minor argument,” I told my wife, surprising her. She believed we were discussing paint colors, but I was still bringing up our argument from five years ago, when she seemed to be ordering me what to do. Like you, I had no idea that my long-simmering resentment had become the storyline around which every argument revolved.

Disagreements are inevitable in any relationship with a lengthy history. It’s essential that when you do, you take stock of the pain you’ve felt, figure out what caused it, and forgive and be forgiven. A persistent resentment might develop if any of these things don’t take place. Keep reading for five ways that holding a grudge is ruining your marriage.

1. It builds a wall between you and your wife.

Forgiveness is like a competent mason’s work. They start work before you even have your coffee in the morning and have half a wall constructed by the time you finish yours. It’s not overt. But being close to someone is impossible while harboring resentment. As time goes on, it quietly pulls you farther and more away from your wife. Slowly but surely, you begin to lose interest in making an effort to strengthen your relationship. Looking at her makes you reflect on her words and actions and how they affected you. In a marriage, harboring resentment at one’s partner is a certain way to make them your adversary.

2. It takes away your sense of agency.

Maintaining a feeling of control over one’s relationship is vital. You must believe that your work is meaningful and that you can make a difference. But when spouses harbor resentment toward one another, it saps their agency. You can’t stop thinking about her and how she made you feel, even though there’s a chance to develop something with her. When you hold grudges, you can’t let go of the past and move on.

3. It creates a narrative that distorts future interactions.

When you keep resentment and blame inside, it’s like the tale you tell yourself about your fight with your wife. According to my account, “my wife wants to control me.” Consequently, that perspective was applied to every conversation, regardless of its veracity (which was frequently inaccurate). Because you’re constantly circling back to the past, we can’t address the current problem. Your partner will likewise go completely bonkers since she has no idea what you’re telling yourself. The world doesn’t need more terrible stories; some just must end.

4. It steals the joy.

The joy you deserve in your marriage can be taken away when you keep grudges, as they only serve to fortify walls and fuel false narratives. As long as you can’t put the past behind you, you won’t be able to appreciate the little but significant victories in your marriage. How incredible is it that there is another human being out there who is interested in your boring job, who is ready to listen to your stories over and over again, and who will go on walks with you for no apparent reason whatsoever? These are very remarkable and delightful events. When you hold a grudge, though, the story and the wall will obscure all of that.

5. It hardens your heart.

Keeping resentment and animosity inside you can eventually cause your heart to harden. If you keep telling yourself terrible things about your wife, let the wall to grow, feel powerless and react, and stop appreciating the little miracles, you will soon grow to dislike or even hate her. Intimacy will no longer be desired by you. You probably won’t want your marriage to get better. At this point, there may be no turning back. It has the potential to bring you unending sorrow, bitterness, and letdowns. Or, as you might expect, it can cause the couple to break up.

After a fight, are you able to mend a relationship? A “heated discussion” is just a polite way of saying that my wife and I had an argument last week. We like competing in a wide variety of activities, from board games to athletic events, and we are both former athletes. On our honeymoon, we were playing tennis at the resort when we nearly had an argument. She is my soulmate, without a doubt, but I will not be lenient with her since love on the tennis court and love in a marriage are very different.

Everyone has to know how to mend a broken relationship eventually. Filling the void that a fight leaves behind is the first step. We guys need to mediate conflicts at home. So, you prioritize your wife’s sentiments before your own, regardless of whether you think she’s wrong. If you want her to feel comfortable expressing herself, you must master the art of listening to her. After a fight, you don’t want to keep the distance between you; you want to close it. You can end a quarrel with your wife in one of these three ways.

1. Take the first step.

The first step is always the hardest, but anyone who has raced a marathon knows better. It is your responsibility to go to your wife first after a fight and try to make things right. This might begin with a text message expressing your gratitude to her if the argument took place over the phone. It must culminate in an apology delivered to her in person, no matter what. You need to keep in mind that you committed to your wife for the rest of your life when you’re in the midst of an argument with her. Marriage is a long journey, not a quick one. Showing that you value your wife more than proving yourself correct after an argument by initiating efforts to mend the relationship is admirable.

2. Work to understand her.

Rather than listening and attempting to comprehend her situation, you rush to find a solution, which leads to an argument with your wife. This happens when she simply wants to communicate. Your focus is more on finishing the conversation than on trying to comprehend her emotions. After she finishes expressing herself, inquire as to how it makes her feel.

This demonstrates your understanding and appreciation for her hardships. Solving the problem at its core is your ultimate objective, and this can help you get there! Until you make a sincere effort to comprehend your wife’s experiences and emotions, you will not be able to comprehend how to mend a relationship following an argument.

3. Apologize to her instead of saying you’re sorry.

Men can do better than the common practice of apologizing for actions or words they did not intend. A sincere apology conveys to your wife that you acknowledge your mistake and feel remorse. Be sure to ask your wife to forgive you once you’ve apologized. You are trying to mend fences after the fight by pleading for her clemency. Putting our egos aside and doing what’s right for our marriages isn’t going to be easy, but it’s necessary.

You might think this is really insane. When you argue with your wife, you should do it with purpose. I’m not advocating actively seeking out disagreements. You’re under no obligation to find pleasure in it. (To be honest, there would likely be another issue if you found enjoyment in confrontation.) What I mean is that you should have a plan in place before you start one.

There is a common understanding of the significance of objectives among psychologists, coaches and athletes, educators and administrators, and even the Marines. Be aware of your destination. The first step is to define your goals. Anything can be altered by it. So what if you and your wife were to get into an argument? Going out of a fight as fast as possible feels like the ultimate aim a lot of the time. I understand. There are times when it’s the best way to try to calm things down, and you also don’t want it to endure forever. However, there are a number of alternative aims that might benefit your marriage before, during, and after a disagreement.

1. Move toward your wife. Don’t keep score.

Because conflict always centers on something that is personal, it drives a wedge between us. An argument, an injury, or conflicting goals. Regardless of the difficulty, you should strive to get closer to your wife. The following is a tweet: One unhealthy approach to arguing is to keep score of each side’s arguments over the course of twelve rounds. A more effective approach is to maintain an attitude of unwavering determination to keep us connected. At least not right now. No, weariness. No one’s children. Not sexually explicit. Regarding our holiday spot for this year, we have no disagreements. I have no problem being with you. Can you tell the two? Your focus should be on finding a solution, not on getting your point over, if you’re in a fight with your wife and want to draw closer to her no matter what. Or getting higher scores.

2. Do and say what will benefit her. Don’t try to get her to change.

In our pursuit of personal gain, we reveal too much about our partners. With your behavior like this, you’re bringing nothing but misery into my life! When we argue, it’s usually because we want the other person to realize how unfair and damaging they are. While this may not always be incorrect, there is an improved objective. When you’re in a fight with your wife, try to put her needs before your own. What is the most beneficial thing she can hear? At times, that is the uncompromising reality. But when you give it as a life-sustaining aid instead of a defensive strike, it sounds quite different. When the two of you are at odds, what is it that your wife requires of you? Give that a go instead of focusing on short-term gratification. If you want your wife to feel she’s not alone, you might end up staying involved in the argument for longer. On the other hand, by getting to the heart of the matter, you may discover that the discussion improves and progresses to a more profound level.

3. Repair a breach. Don’t aggravate old wounds.

As a long-standing observation by medical professionals, the presence of calcium deposits at the site of a bone fracture enhances the healing process. If you view disagreements as cracks in your relationship, then you should strive to mend those cracks. During intense arguments, it’s easy to let out even more pent-up frustrations. Rather than asking, “What more can I say to support my argument?” shift your focus to mending the rift. That is not always the same as giving up. For wounds to heal, it is common to have to scrape and clean them painfully. Instead of purposefully pursuing retaliation, focus on healing.

The idea isn’t as far-fetched as it seems. When you and your wife are at odds, remembering these objectives might help you stay on track toward wellness, no matter how bad things become.

Telling your wife a lie is the surest way to destroy her faith in you and your marriage. As for me, I had no intention of cheating on my ex-wife. My life, my wife, and our problems were the subjects of in-depth discussions that began as occasional, clandestine chats but blossomed into regular, open dialogue. It was the last straw that broke the faith we had in one another and, by extension, our marriage.

Are you being a decent husband or are you maybe being silly when you talk to other women? What follows is some counsel I’ve gleaned from my own experiences in speaking with females other than my wife. In your interactions with females other than your spouse, please note the following three dos and don’ts.

1. Don’t ever complain to another woman about your wife or let another woman complain to you about her husband.

Why? For two reasons: one, your wife didn’t authorize you to complain about her, and second, you’re dishonoring her by doing so. You must honor and safeguard your wife’s dignity if you desire her respect for you. It is impolite to speak ill of your wife to another woman. Never allow another woman to bring shame on her husband by airing her grievances with you.

2. Stay away from topics about sex, secrets, and struggles.

Why? For the simple reason that it is none of her concern, and you dishonor your wife when you discuss such personal matters with another woman. Be respectful and careful in your interactions with other women; you should never betray your wife’s confidence or intimacy.

3. Never meet with women in private settings (especially online).

Make sure others can see you by making it public. Keep your meetings open to the public because temptation thrives in secrecy. I understand that it’s not always feasible, but I’ll provide some suggestions on how to make it work in the future.

I worked at a lock shop during the summer while I was a college student. Rock, my boss, was a stocky African-American man with a rough voice and a rippling physique. He worked tirelessly, knew everyone by name, and was a fantastic storyteller. The day someone asked him to get screws from the warehouse is one of my favorite anecdotes about him. A screw-related in-house construction project apparently necessitated the company’s efforts to cut costs and save time. Consequently, Rock was summoned by his manager to the warehouse, where he was instructed to unscrew each and every screw that secured the tall steel shelves to the walls. Using a right-to-left motion, Rock climbed a ladder and set out to work. Even when he took out a few screws, the shelves remained upright. Finally, he went up the ladder one last time and took out the last screw from the last shelf, causing it to lean and smash into the one beside it.

The remaining shelves and all the items on them collapsed like a house of dominoes. A heap of rubble greeted the manager as he dashed in. Perched awkwardly on the ladder behind the rubble, Rock clutched a single screw. After an awkward period, Rock finally spoke out and told the manager, “This is your fault.” This is also something we do in our marriages. Believing falsehoods is like unscrewing the screws in a marriage. It’s risky, it makes people make poor choices, and it causes infidelity to manifest. Extramarital affairs also do not occur at random. False beliefs and justifications lead to these consequences. However, debunking falsehoods prevents us from being sucked in by them. The domino effect can be avoided if one is aware of the telltale indications of adultery. Here are some harmful misconceptions that spouses hold that can cause them to cheat on their spouse.

My spouse should make me happy/I deserve to be happy.

Marriage is not about or intended for happiness, though it may be a component of it. Simply put, a self-centered attitude is fostered when one believes this to be true. Cultivating this mindset leads to routine partner blaming and eventual hatred. You find that the list of your spouse’s bad traits keeps growing. All it does is try to provide an excuse for being selfish so that the person can keep chasing after happiness or better opportunities. In marriage, we learn to love one another through thick and thin, to give and die to ourselves. That is the reason why it is both challenging and satisfying.

There’s nothing wrong with a little flirting.

Flirting is fun and thrilling. If you share that person’s sexual attraction for you, it will make you feel even better when they find you appealing. Everyone longs to regain that sensation. A married person’s rationalization of flirting with another person is that it is meaningless. Yet, it is. Because it teaches the heart to wander, it hurts your partner. While it’s normal to experience romantic interest in other people, it’s wrong to let those sentiments lead you to accept someone who doesn’t belong in your heart. When you flirt, it’s like jumping into a river that has a strong current but finishes with a big drop-off.

What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.

This mentality could develop when you repeatedly perform things that you know will annoy your partner. You know it’s wrong and likely feel bad about it, but you still can’t bring yourself to stop. Saying to himself, “I’m not hurting anyone,” is all this person needs to feel better. Although it is painful. Secrecy leads to estrangement. No matter the degree of separation, spouses have an innate ability to perceive it. Even if they don’t say anything, they may feel it. Disconnection can creep into a relationship the moment one partner believes a deception like this. The chasm widens until this individual finds a connection with another.

I have sexual needs.

You can’t exist without food. You do not require sex. It’s a desire of yours. Such a mindset gives sexual desires much too much control. Having sexual relations outside of marriage is also subtly justified in this way. Following a goal becomes less of a struggle once it has internal justification. On the other hand, if you believe that sexual activity is essential to a healthy marriage, then it’s a need for both partners, not just one. If your sexual desires are focused solely on you, it’s likely that they are desires rather than needs.

Our marriage problems are my spouse’s fault.

A marriage is a union between a man and a woman. Even if one person is mostly to blame, they are far from alone. This is a practical means of evading accountability. Irresponsibility, shifting blame, and self-justification all lead to a person’s coldness. Defenses are fortified and the process of separation starts. Rarely does a single individual bear the whole responsibility.

Love Actually does have some interesting plot points, but it also has a number of moments that are unsuitable. The tale of Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson’s Harry and Karen, a married couple, is a tragic one. Upon discovering that Harry has cheated on her, Karen approaches him with a thought-provoking inquiry. Her question is this: “If you were in my shoes, what would you do?” If you knew your life would get somewhat worse every day, would you stay or go away?

This is a question that every relationship dealing with the hurt of an affair must face. Since the anguish of betrayal is so profound, it is easy to fall into a state of hopelessness regarding the relationship. Many couples ruin or severely harm their relationships because they act impulsively based on their emotions. Feelings are understandable, but even if things look bad now, what will happen in the future? Is adultery fatal to a marriage? Can one really truly move on from infidelity? If yes, then what is the process? The questions and their solutions are presented here.

Rebuilding a Great Marriage

A person’s life can still improve after an affair. Actually, it might even be superior. I don’t mean that things will be a picnic when I say things will be better; moreover, I am not implying that adultery is beneficial to marital harmony. Nevertheless, it might be utilized to uncover the mindset and actions that fostered an atmosphere where having an affair was deemed desirable.

Repairing a Cracked Foundation

The foundation of a great marriage is trust and love. A powerful break occurs when those are breached. The truth is that it can occasionally cause a wound that never completely mends. However, that in no way indicates defeat. The healing process starts when the offender expresses full regret for their actions and offers forgiveness and grace to the victim. Once that is accomplished, trust can be rebuilt.

Truthfulness, transparency, and honesty in daily life are necessary for it to occur for everyone, but especially for the one who cheated. The perpetrator must be willing to talk about the affair openly, not hiding anything from the victim. There needs to be no holding back. Creating a list of justifications to be trusted again ought to be the objective. Those who have been wronged should be free to talk about the situation for as long as they need. It might take a long time. Forgiveness could take some time to take effect. But if the offended party forgives, they will let go of resentment and hold the offender accountable for their actions.

Choosing Hope

In order for a marriage to succeed, the husband and wife must both put their hearts into it. Rather than giving up and getting a divorce, couples should make the choice to work hard for their marriage and dream of what it may be. The marriage and one’s partner are both worth fighting for. A positive outlook on the future ought to take center stage and be safeguarded. A wonderful marriage is within reach, and the couple must believe it. Feelings of pessimism and despair are undesirable.

Finding Objective Help

In times of difficulty, more than any other kind of marriage, knowledge, understanding, and encouragement are needed. To begin, there is probably dysfunction beneath the surface of the marriage that has led to its current state. Finding the source of the couple’s problems and encouraging them to make changes requires an impartial third party’s perspective. Professional counseling and/or mentoring are two ways this can manifest. Additionally, they should surround themselves with supportive individuals who will encourage them to achieve their marriage goals. These individuals should remind them that a healthy relationship is within their reach.
