Hundreds from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer along with quickfire fifties from Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul led India to a dominating 399/5 before spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets to thrash Australia by 99 runs (DLS) in a rain-curtailed match at Indore and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

On a hot day at a typically high-scoring venue, India, without captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Virat Kohli, hit 18 sixes (their second-highest ODI total) to propel the hosts to their third-highest ODI innings against Australia. Jasprit Bumrah was given a short home break by the team management, but he wasn’t required in what was one of the most clinical performances in recent years.

What failed at Mohali due to a run out due to a lapse in concentration blossomed into a 200-run partnership for the second wicket between Gill and Iyer off only 164 deliveries, setting India up for a mammoth score. Suryakumar smashed 72 runs unbeaten off 37 deliveries, and Rahul, the stand-in captain, scored 52 runs off 38 balls to heap misery on Australia.

Gill, who scored 74 off 63 deliveries in Mohali, reached his fifth ODI century of the year with 104, which included six fours and four sixes. It was also Gill’s second consecutive century at Indore; earlier this year, he scored 112 off 78 deliveries against New Zealand. Early on, Gill had nine runs off 19 deliveries, but he and Iyer quickly added 50 runs off 29 balls. Once the field was dispersed, they had no trouble rotating the strike and consolidating India’s 158-run start in the first 20 overs.

Iyer scored his third ODI century in the 30th over before being caught at deep midwicket in the following over. Gill was dismissed in the 35th over, but India’s run rate did not decrease due to Ishan Kishan’s aggressive strokes around the wicket.

Suryakumar Yadav started off a bit sluggishly, but he soon began slamming boundaries all around the pitch, completely unsettling an already rudderless Australian bowling attack that was missing Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis. Rahul was also in his element, dismissing Sean Abbott for 17 runs in the 47th over en route to his second fifty of the series off only 24 deliveries. India scored 103 runs during the last ten overs.

Wednesday’s final ODI will be contested in Rajkot.

Greg Chappell, a former Australian cricketer, predicts that youthful Indian batsman Shubman Gill will struggle against Australia’s bowling attack in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. India, led by Rohit Sharma, and Australia, captained by Pat Cummins, will face off in the second iteration of the WTC final, beginning on June 7 at The Oval in London.

The 23-year-old, who has had a great deal of success in all formats of the game over the past seven months, will presumably open the batting for India alongside captain Rohit in the championship tournament. Chappell believes Gill will struggle to handle the additional bounce and speed if Australian pacers hit the correct line and lengths at The Oval, given that the juvenile has some vulnerabilities. He did concede, however, that he is a tremendous player and that he would discipline Australia if their bowling was ineffective.

“I don’t want to go into too much detail, but I’m certain the Australians have witnessed a few of the same incidents I have. There are a few things that Shubman does early in his innings that make him susceptible to that length around off stump, and if the ball travels a bit more than usual, he will be prone to nicking off behind the wicket. However, he is an excellent performer. “He will punish them if they do not bowl,” Chappell said on Backstage with Boria.

Chappell, a former India head coach, believes Australia’s Mitchell Starc can cause issues for India’s Virat Kohli due to Starc’s increased speed. If Josh Hazlewood is able to play, he could pose a challenge to the Indian batsman, according to the 74-year-old. If Hazlewood is unable to play, Scott Boland, who is capable of troubling any opponent, will presumably take his place.

“Gill has previously visited England. If the Australians bowl well in English conditions, he will struggle like everyone else. The bowlers who will cause him the most difficulty are those with extra pace, such as Mitchell Starc. That can cause concern for anyone. The increased speed entices excellent players to leave the field.

Also See | David Warner confirms Test retirement after series against Pakistan

I believe that if Hazlewood is healthy enough to perform, he could pose a problem for Shubman due to the additional bounce. If Hazlewood does not play, Boland will likely replace him, as he is another bowler capable of causing problems for anyone. He bowls an accurate line. He understands what a decent length in English conditions is,” Chappell said.

The former Australian batsman also lauded Gill and the Indian cricket system, which fosters youthful players more effectively than systems in other nations. Gill is an experienced player who has played international cricket, scored runs, and participated in a great deal of first-class cricket, according to Chappell.

The CEO and managing director of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Venky Mysore, stated that the franchise has “no regrets” about not retaining players such as Shubman Gill, who have since performed well for other IPL franchises.

The loss of Shubman Gill was the Gujarat Titans’ gain, as the India opener played a crucial role in their championship run last season.

Mysore told reporters on the sidelines of the Knight Golf event, “It’s actually gratifying to see some of the players we’ve developed succeed with other franchises — Shubman Gill is an illustration.”

Last season, Gill ranked among the top five run scorers with 483 runs. He scored 333 runs in eight innings (average of 41.62), placing him second on the list of leading run scorers behind Faf Du Plessis.

Not only Gill, but also former KKR teammates Kuldeep Yadav (Delhi Capitals), Piyush Chawla (Mumbai Indians), and Ajinkya Rahane (Chennai Super Kings) are performing well for their respective franchises.

Rahane, who received limited opportunities at KKR last season, has been transformed by the charismatic MS Dhoni and returned to Team India in Tests after a 15-month absence.

On Tuesday in Indore, Gill scored 112 runs off of 78 balls, his fourth ODI century and second of the series.
The series began in Hyderabad, where the series’ opening batsman scored 208 runs to become the fifth Indian to score a double century in one-day international cricket.

With his 40 in the second ODI of the series, Gill has now scored 360 runs in the bilateral series.

Those runs are tied for the most ever scored by a hitter in a three-game or shorter bilateral ODI series.
Babar Azam scored 360 runs in a 2016 series against the West Indies, scoring centuries in all three games.

Gill has gotten off to a fantastic start in ODIs, scoring 1254 runs in 21 games at an impressive average of 73.76 and a strike rate of 109.80.
Earlier in the series, in his 19th ODI innings, the youngster reached 1000 runs, making him the fastest Indian and the second-fastest player overall to do so.

After the hosts won the toss and elected to bat first in Indore, he and Rohit Sharma put together a double-century stand to put India in control of the match.

Five of Gill and Rohit’s six opening partnerships in ODIs have gone for fifty or more runs.
