Recently, approximately 16 underprivileged children from various Indian cities traveled to the UK for a football tournament. The educational tour to the UK, coordinated by the Oscar Foundation of Mumbai, saw the children engage in amicable football matches with students from the host schools in the United Kingdom. This activity was conducted as part of a cultural exchange initiative orchestrated by an Indian NGO that operates under the Sports for Development (S4D) umbrella. In addition to attending educational seminars and participating in seven football matches with school teams, the youngsters also enjoyed a sightseeing tour of London.

Additionally, they were granted an opportunity to encounter Rishi Sunak, the PM of the UK, at his residence situated in London. “During the meeting, the children shared with the Prime Minister and his wife, Akshata Murty, their life experiences, dedication to education, passion for football, and belief in gender equality,” according to a source.

Regarding the opportunity, youthful player Akshay Rathod from Yadgir, Karnataka, exclaims, “Playing football with the teams in the United Kingdom was an unforgettable experience. It not only facilitated my athletic progress but also contributed positively to my academic growth. It was a privilege to meet the Duchess of Edinburgh and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

An additional footballer from Mumbai, Aarti Chavan, states: “For me, football has always been more than a pastime; it is comparable to breathing. “My recent experience competing against British schools was truly remarkable and unforgettable.”

“I have just returned from an incredible tour of the United Kingdom,” says Jyoti Kumari of Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, adding that she never imagined performing internationally or meeting such dignitaries. We had the opportunity to play football with some exceptional students from our school. “It was an honor to speak with Prime Minister Sunak about my dedication to education and my enthusiasm for football,” she says.

According to Ashok Rathod, the Founder of the Oscar Foundation, Prime Minister Sunak was extremely receptive and appreciative of our conviction that sports have the capacity to transform lives. Additionally, the children were ecstatic to meet the wife and prime minister of Sunak.”

This was India in the early 1970s – a still-young nation in the grips of the Licence Raj, where slogans of “garibi hatao” and “unity in diversity” reverberated out, two years before the imposition of Emergency and ten years before the Indian cricket team would be the toast of the cricketing world at Lord’s.

In the latter part of the decade that followed, the country slowly began to learn about Sachin, who was previously unknown. First, when, as a 14-year-old, he started getting noticed in the Mumbai maidans for his voracious appetite for runs; then when he broke into the Indian team at the cusp of 16, after wowing the stalwarts of the time at a specially organised nets session; and eventually in 1989, when he danced down the track to a gyrating Abdul Qadir in Peshawar, and brushed aside a bloody nose to stand up to Waqar Younis in Sialkot.

For the newly globalized India of the 1990s, Sachin represented a generation waiting to decompress. A generation of which he may have been a product, but which he would also define. Consequently, for the next two decades, as the nation received new services, facilities, beverages, automobiles, communications networks, and television networks, and was ravaged by communal violence and political unrest, Sachin was the only constant. His reputation grew and endured to the extent that the personal histories of an entire population became intricately intertwined with his achievements.

We recall where we were when he wore an India jersey for the first time as a child with curly hair. As we recall what we were doing when he first opened the batting in a brisk morning one-day match in Auckland in 1994. When he defeated Australia in the “Desert Storm” at Sharjah in 1998. When he fought alone against Pakistan in Chennai and narrowly lost. In 2004, he scored 241 runs, all on the on-side, in Sydney. When, 21 years into his career, he stretched the boundaries of the one-day format with a double century in Gwalior. When he was carried on the shoulders of his teammates at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai after India won the 2011 World Cup. And when, at age 40, he sobbed in front of a stand bearing his name as he bid farewell to a sport he had transformed in his own image, he was on his home field.

For significant portions of India who were children in the 1980s, young adults in the 1990s, young careerists in the 2000s, and managers in the 2010s, a Tendulkar memory was interwoven with our own highs and lows, romances and heartbreaks, promotions and passovers.

In the past decade, it has been difficult to imagine Sachin without cricket, more difficult to imagine cricket without Sachin, and perhaps most difficult to accept that his intellect no longer enlivens our lives.

As a cricket journalist for the first half of my career, I had rare opportunities to gain insight into Sachin’s intellect and character. In 2002, for instance, Sachin pulled me aside at the Barbados airport with twinkling eyes to explain that the proper manner to greet people in the Caribbean was with a fist on the heart. In Lahore, Pakistan, during the 2004 Pakistan tour, Sachin was trailing me 19-16 in a table-tennis doubles match. As I was preparing my next serve, my ambidextrous opponent switched the paddle from his right hand to his left, finished the match with five fierce smashes, and flashed a mischievous grin. During a flight between Tests, Sachin, who was playing Snake on his Nokia phone two seats away, abruptly tugged on my shirt and handed me his phone – the screen was black, and the snake had no more food.

These instances provided insight into an otherwise reserved individual’s affection for people and traditions, his inherent mischievousness, and his competitive drive.

Sachin was a phenomenal cricketer, but he was not flawless, nor can anyone be. He committed errors and fallacies, as do all humans. In conflicts with the Indian board or within the team, it could be said that he did not always advocate for the best interests of the team as a whole. Between the springs of 2011 and 2012, his pursuit of the 100th international century dominated his batting. That he did not always manage the endgame with the same ease as VVS Laxman, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and now Rishabh Pant. In contrast to the all-powerful cricketing deity we like to remember him as, Sachin usually succeeded and occasionally failed.

But rather than diminishing what Sachin meant to an Indian generation that so passionately identified with him, these relative flaws added an essential dimension.

With Sachin’s 50th birthday approaching, the query is not what the landmark means to him, but what it means to us. To begin with, it indicates that we have all aged, as the hair at the temples is receding and the sideburns are graying. The world of limitless possibilities that we once inhabited is now in the past. And that we, the products of that shared time and space, may be divided by class, caste, ideology, or politics, but one thing will always unite us: a cricketer whose bat striking the ball was the soundtrack to our coming of age.

Thursday, the Sports Ministry extended the term of the MC Mary Kom-led committee that is investigating the sexual harassment claims made by some of India’s top wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, its officials, and instructors.

“MYAS has granted the Oversight Committee for wrestling an additional two weeks to submit a report regarding the complaint lodged by a group of wrestlers against the Wrestling Federation of India. Per the request of the Oversight Committee, the extension has been granted “In a statement, the ministry said.

It also signifies that the oversight committee will continue to manage the WFI administration until the investigation is complete.

“The extension also applies to other responsibilities assigned to the committee, including the day-to-day administration of WFI,” the statement read.

On January 23, five members were appointed to the committee. It included Olympic bronze medalist Yogeshwar Dutt, former shuttler Trupti Murgunde, and former SAI administrators Radhica Sreeman and Rajesh Rajagopalan, in addition to Mary Kom. A week later, however, Babita Phogat was added as the sixth member of the council after protesting wrestlers claimed the ministry did not consult them.

According to reports, the panel has met with protesting wrestlers, national instructors, and WFI officials on multiple occasions. In addition, the committee has approved the team for the second ranking series tournament in Egypt, which began on Thursday. In addition to skipping the ranking series in Zagreb, Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Ravi Dahiya, Vinesh Phogat, and Deepak Punia, as well as world championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, opted out of the tournament.

The decision was made by UWW after consulting with the oversight committee. According to UWW, the environment in India is not suitable for hosting a tournament of this magnitude. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place from March 28 to April 2 in New Delhi.

When you’ve been a die-hard fan of a sports club for years, you tend to elevate its players and stars to an unattainable pedestal.
It comes about naturally.
As I’ve mentioned before, I grew up in Pittsburgh during the 1970s, when the Steelers, the city’s NFL franchise, won four Super Bowls.
The Steelers from that era are therefore highly regarded.

It hurt when Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris, one of their biggest stars, passed away unexpectedly last month.
He wasn’t just my favourite Steeler; I got to know him and was honoured when he invited me to his Hall of Fame induction ceremony in the summer of 1990. The event included a brunch with former NFL greats and a party that night at the Pittsburgh Hilton, where I got to meet a lot of my idols from those Super Bowl teams.
Harris maintained his reputation.

Chuck Noll, the team’s coach, was someone I also looked up to.
Tony Dungy, one of Noll’s defensive backs, impressed Noll with his leadership abilities and football expertise, so Noll started mentoring him to become a football coach, which he did.

During his 13-year coaching tenure, Dungy managed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in addition to winning a Super Bowl with the Indianapolis Colts.
In 2016, he was inducted as a coach into the NFL Hall of Fame.

Football fans are aware that Dungy is currently a well-known NFL analyst and broadcaster on NBC.
Your blood will boil over what you don’t know about him, though.
Dungy is not a friend to our community, claims Cyd Zeigler in a two-part, in-depth article on Outsports.

“Dungy… established himself as possibly the most publicly anti-gay person in at least the recent history of the NFL,” writes Zeigler. “He raised money to fight against same-sex marriage, and since then, he has publicly decried the homosexuality of gay athletes and partnered with rabidly anti-gay organisations and individuals.”

Zeigler wrote about Dungy making homophobic remarks when Michael Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the NFL and when Jason Collins came out in the NBA. I won’t repeat what he said because you should read his tale for yourself.

That Dungy is a friend and supporter of right-wing Christian nationalist Pastor Andrew Wommack, who has said that being gay is “three times worse than smoking” and that gay people “ought to put a label across their forehead, ‘This can be hazardous to your health,'” is the revelation that most worries me, at least it does for me.

Dungy has spoken at Wommack events, has supported Wommack’s ministry, and will do so once more in March at a gathering called Men’s Advance.
Among other things, Wommack’s Charis Bible College promotes anti-gay and anti-trans attitudes while claiming to have a biblical foundation for them.

Frankly, that was all I needed to know about Dungy.
However, the main point of Zeigler’s pieces is that NBC, Dungy’s employer, is aware of his rabid anti-LGBTQ+ views but does nothing to change them.

No comments on his story were made by NBC.
Zeigler notes that ESPN commentator Curt Schilling and Cincinnati Reds announcer Thom Brennaman were also fired for anti-LGBTQ+ remarks.
So why does NBC not mention Dungy?

I’m sorry, but even though many people believe Dungy to be the kindest person alive, endorsing and amplifying hate speech is dangerous.
One of those who says, “Hate the sin, love the sinner,” is undoubtedly Dungy.
But Dungy demonstrates that he doesn’t love the sinner but rather has violent intentions toward the sinner by being complicit in and openly supporting anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech.
Though he might be horrified to hear it, he shouldn’t be.

We are all aware that the rise in violence against LGBTQ+ persons is directly related to the rise in hate speech directed at our group.
Stories of deaths and injuries caused by hate crimes are abundant in The Advocate’s news archive, especially those from the previous year.
It has been quite overwhelming to watch it grow every day.
You can get desensitised to all the death and damage if you read our news feeds.

Since Elon Musk became involved, hate speech against us on Twitter has increased at a previously unheard-of rate, which is correlated with an uptick in crime.

Thanks to his over 80K followers who disseminate his venom, Wommack has taken over Twitter.
The fact that Dungy has roughly a million supporters makes the situation worse because every time he is linked to Wommack or makes an unpleasant remark about us, the hatred and anger grow stronger.
Dungy could believe everything is harmless when he posts something about homosexual NFL players or makes an appearance with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, or DeSatan to us.
But Dungy’s remarks and deeds have an impact.

People who respect and revere Dungy, especially young people, can only infer from what he says and the people he prays and hangs out with that it’s OK to hate us because he does, and to go one step further, it’s OK to hate us because NBC turns a blind eye.
And at that point, the violence begins.

Former NFL player Ryan O’Callaghan, who collaborates with the NFL on LGBTQ+ activism and alliances and aids the league in outreach to the LGBTQ+ community, is reinforcing this message.
I enquired about O’Callaghan’s opinion of Dungy.
He remarked, “Tony Dungy needs to understand his words can be upsetting to others who look up to him and just demonstrate his stupidity. I don’t know Tony Dungy personally.”
“I sincerely hope Mr. Dungy may find it in his Christian heart to put aside his prejudices and begin to love his neighbour.”

RK Russell, a former NFL player who played for Dungy in Tampa Bay and came out as bisexual in 2019, spoke with Zeigler while he was a free agent.
“Being a Black coach and a coach who wasn’t the conventional get-in-your-face-and-curse-you-out, he was someone I looked up to.
When someone you like doesn’t share your opinions, it can be depressing.
It’s distressing,” remarked Russell.

And I feel exactly that way.
I can no longer hold this man in high regard, despite the fact that he earned his name as a player with my team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and helped them win one of our coveted six Super Bowls.
He doesn’t get a pass for this one, excuse the pun.
Instead, I’m consigning Dungy to the history of the NFL’s worst-moments until he retracts all of his retaliation against me, a die-hard Steelers supporter, and my neighbourhood.

On NBC on Saturday, Dungy will call the wild-card game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
I want to watch because I love football.
But if Dungy is broadcasting, I’m unable to watch or listen since I’m gay.
When he opens his mouth, I won’t hear him say anything; instead, all I’ll hear is hate.

Do I grit my teeth while watching the game?
Do I turn the sound off while I watch the game?
If Dungy is involved, should I even watch football on NBC any longer?
All of these questions have a negative response.
I’ll figure out a way to stay current on the situation, and I appreciate that I now know what Tony Dungy’s current situation is.

The news outlet said despite not having a medical history, he was found to have “acute oxycodone, hydrocodone and mirtazapine toxicity” after his death.

Johnson, who died due to an apparent drug overdose, had been acting strange and had recently purchased a funeral and cremation service, per the reports received by the news outlet.

“The only personal items in the hotel room appeared to be two empty bottles of water, an empty travel (sized) bottle of body lotion, an empty travel container, a pair or sandals and a pair of eyeglasses,” said the report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh.

“A query of the North Carolina Prescription Monitoring Service showed no active prescriptions. An old (2018) short-term hydrocodone prescription was documented.”

The death of the NFL star had shocked the local community as he had become a “cheerful and giving coach and a staff member” at Heritage High School in Wake Forest, North Carolina, the outlet reported.

Johnson was a Steelers player from 1994 to 1998. His 247 receptions for 3,400 yards and 15 touchdowns totalled 247. In 1996, Johnson had a breakthrough season, hauling in 60 catches for 1,008 yards and three touchdowns. In 1998, he scored seven touchdowns.

Johnson played two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles after joining them in 1999. Eight touchdowns and 1,056 yards came from his 90 receptions. In his first two seasons, he served as Donovan McNabb’s go-to receiver.

Johnson joined the Patriots in 2001 and the squad won a Super Bowl when he was playing quarterback for them. The star left the game after his final encounter with the Buffalo Bills in 2002.
