Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra announced on Thursday that India has deployed the third naval ship INS Tarkash for ongoing evacuation operations in conflict-ridden Sudan.

The Foreign Secretary made the above remarks during a Ministry of External Affairs media briefing on Operation Kaveri, which was launched by the Government of India to rescue Indians stranded in conflict-ridden Sudan.

“I’m informed that the third ship, INS Tarkash, has also reached Port Sudan today as part of our efforts,” Kwatra stated.

The Foreign Secretary informed the media about the progress of the rescue operation in Sudan, stating, “Two naval ships have been positioned as part of the Government of India’s efforts. The INS Sumedha was the first ship to arrive, picked up approximately 300 Indians yesterday, transported them to Port Jeddah, and is now back in Port Sudan to bring the next group of Indians to safe harbors.

Kwatra stated that the Indian government is making numerous efforts to rescue Indians from Sudan, including the establishment of control rooms in India and Sudan.

Kwatra stated, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a high-level meeting in which he personally reviewed and directed officials of the Government of India to take appropriate measures to assist and return these stranded Indians.”

In addition, the Foreign Secretary stated, “As part of our efforts, two C-130 aircraft of the Indian Air Force have been mobilized and are permanently stationed in Jeddah since April 19.” In addition, we have established control rooms in Jeddah and Port Sudan. Consequently, we operate two control centers alongside our embassy. Therefore, there is a complete triangulation of efforts between the control room in Jeddah, our consulate and mission in Riyadh, the control room team in Port Sudan, which is located on the northeastern coast of Sudan, and our embassy in Khartoum City.”

“Of course, each of these three hubs is coordinating their efforts and direction to return the stranded Indians, with the headquarters in Delhi,” he continued.

In addition, Foreign Secretary Kwatra discussed the current situation and ceasefires in Sudan. He stated that numerous cease-fires have been declared and that many of them have not been honored.

“There have been reports of intermittent firing. Kwatra stated that the situation on the ground remains extremely volatile.

Putting speculations about the number of Indians stranded in Sudan to rest, Kwatra stated, “Our estimation is that there are approximately 3,500 Indians.” These figures are approximations.”

Additionally, he stated, “I believe roughly 3000 people have already registered online. And approximately 300 more are in contact with Mission embassies. The focus of the Indian government’s efforts has been to advise and assist ordinary Indian citizens.

The Foreign Secretary also stated that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reached out to the foreign ministers of other major allies whose nationals were also stranded in Sudan.

“These included the Foreign Ministers of the United States, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, and last night also included the Foreign Ministers of the United Kingdom. This goes above and beyond. “His discussions with the UN Secretary-General on April 20 in New York centered solely on the situation in Sudan, with the goal of producing an assessment that would aid the Indian government’s efforts to repatriate standard Indians,” Kwatra said.

The battling between the army and paramilitary forces has contributed to the violence in Sudan.

According to media, a 72-hour armistice was imposed to quell the conflict in Sudan, where more than 400 people have been killed.

Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs, announced on Tuesday that Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft have landed in Port Sudan for evacuation operations amid ongoing conflict.

C-130J aircraft from the Indian Air Force have arrived in Sudan to evacuate displaced Indians as the evacuation process continues in the violence-stricken North African nation.

“Operation Kaveri has taken to the air. IAF C-130J aircraft lands in Port Sudan to conduct evacuation operations,” Bagchi tweeted as he provided the relevant information.

In the first phase of “Operation Kaveri,” Indians isolated in Sudan left the war-torn country earlier today (local time). The third Saryu-class patrol vessel of the Indian Navy, INS Sumedha, departed Port Sudan for Jeddah with 278 personnel on board.

In addition, on Tuesday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan inspected the transit facility at the International Indian School in Jeddah, where Indians evacuated from Sudan will be received and temporarily housed prior to their arrival in India.

“Inspected transit facility @IndianPage, Jeddah where Indians evacuated from Sudan will be received and housed for a short time prior to their departure for India. It includes mattresses, provisions, fresh food, restrooms, medical facilities, and WiFi. Has 24*7 control office. #OperationKaveri,” the Ministry of State tweeted.

As combat intensified between the Sudanese Army and paramilitary groups in the capital city of Khartoum on Monday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced that India’s “Operation Kaveri” to evacuate its citizens from war-torn Sudan is underway and that approximately 500 Indians have reached Port Sudan.

India has launched “Operation Kaveri” to transport Indians stranded in war-torn Sudan back home.

INS Teg of the Indian Navy joined Operation Kaveri on Tuesday to assist with the ongoing evacuation of Indians detained in Sudan. According to a senior MEA official, the frigate arrived at Port Sudan on Tuesday with additional officials and essential relief provisions for stranded Indians.

“INS Teg joins #OperationKaveri. Arrives at Port Sudan with additional officials and essential relief supplies for stranded Indians,” tweeted the official spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday.

“Will enhance ongoing evacuation efforts by the Embassy Camp Office in Port Sudan,” tweeted Bagchi.

The INS Teg is the fourth frigate of the Talwar-class constructed for the Indian Navy.

In a recent development, warring factions in Sudan consented to a 72-hour ceasefire on Monday, mediated by the United States and Saudi Arabia, while countries continue to evacuate their citizens.

If the new three-day cessation of combat holds, it could provide a window of opportunity to deliver much-needed critical resources such as food and medical supplies to those in need.

The residence of the European Union’s ambassador to Sudan in Khartoum was assaulted on Monday, the bloc’s top diplomat Josep Borrell said, as fighting between rival generals gripped the nation.

“A few hours ago, the EU Ambassador in Sudan was assaulted in his residence,” Borrell wrote on Twitter, without elaborating on the nature of the ambassador’s injuries.

“International law obliges the Sudanese government to ensure the security of diplomatic facilities and personnel,” he added.

Aidan O’Hare, a 58-year-old Irish diplomat, is the ambassador of the European Union to Sudan. EU spokesperson Nabila Massrali told AFP that he was “OK” after the attack.

“Staff safety is our top priority,” she stated. “No evacuation of the EU delegation has occurred. Security measures are undergoing evaluation.”

The deputy prime minister and foreign minister of Ireland, Micheal Martin, stated that O’Hara was “not seriously injured” but that the assault was “a gross violation of the Vienna Convention’s obligations to protect diplomats.”

“Aidan is an outstanding Irish and European diplomat who is serving the EU under the most difficult circumstances,” Martin said.

“We thank him for his service and urge an immediate cessation of violence and resumption of dialogue in Sudan.”

Three days of urban warfare between the Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary faction has resulted in approximately 200 deaths and 1,800 injuries.

According to an official statement, the World Food Programme has halts all operations in Sudan after three of its employees were killed in clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Cindy McCain, executive director of the United Nations agency, announced in a statement on Sunday that all operations in Sudan have been halts pending a review of the security situation.

“WFP is committed to assisting the Sudanese people facing dire food insecurity,” McCain said, adding, “but we cannot perform our lifesaving work if the safety and security of our teams and partners cannot be guaranteed.” All parties must reach an agreement that guarantees the safety of humanitarian workers on the ground and enables the continuation of life-saving humanitarian aid to the people of Sudan. They remain our primary concern.”

Additionally, the Executive Director of the United Nations agency stated that any loss of life during humanitarian service is “unacceptable.” In addition, she demanded “immediate steps to guarantee the safety of those who remain.”

According to the statement, McCain emphasized that threats to WFP teams make it impossible for them to operate safely and effectively in the country and carry out the vital work of the UN agency.

In a separate incident on Saturday, a WFP-managed UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) aircraft was severely damaged during an exchange of gunfire at Khartoum International Airport, severely hindering the WFP’s ability to transport humanitarian personnel and aid within the country.

Media reported that at least 56 people have died and nearly 600 have been injured as a result of clashes between the Sudanese military and the country’s primary paramilitary force, which broke out after months of tensions.

Media was told by eyewitnesses in the capital city of Khartoum that combat intensified after Sunday morning prayers, accompanied by loud noises and explosions. There have also been reports of battles in the eastern city of Port Sudan, hundreds of miles distant.

According to the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors, at least 56 people have been slain and nearly 600 injured in the clashes, as reported by media.

The leader of Sudan’s paramilitary forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, claims to have seized the majority of Khartoum’s official sites following Saturday’s military confrontations.

“The Rapid Support Forces control more than 90 percent of strategic sites in Khartoum,” said Dagalo in an interview with Sky News Arabia.

Also read this:4.0 magnitude earthquake hits Afsin, Turkey

The country’s military commander, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, refuted Dagalo’s claims and stated that the military has maintained control over government websites.
