The FSB stated that it had “stopped the illegal activities of US citizen Gershkovich Evan, born in 1991, a correspondent for the Moscow bureau of the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal who was accredited at the Russian Foreign Ministry and suspected of spying for the American government.”

Prior to joining, Evan Gershkovich, age 31, worked for AFP in Moscow. He previously served as a reporter for the English-language news website The Moscow Times.
