413 people have died and 3,551 injuries, in sudan conflict according to the Sudanese government, WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris reported at a UN press conference.

The battling is a continuation of ongoing clashes between the country’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

She reported 11 confirmed assaults on healthcare facilities, including 10 since April 15.

“According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, twenty health facilities have ceased operations. In addition, according to Ministry of Health data, 12 health facilities are at risk of closing,” said Harris.

The WHO spokesperson was quoted by Anadolu as saying, “This means that all those people who require care are impacted, and this includes not only those who have been injured by hearings and terrible fighting, but also those who required treatment before and will require treatment in the future.”

At the same press conference, James Elder, a spokesperson for UNICEF, stated, “As always, the violence has a devastating impact on children.

Anadolu reported that UNICEF has received reports of children taking refuge in schools and care centers as fighting rages around them and of children’s hospitals being forced to evacuate as bombardment approaches.

Elder stated that prior to the escalation of violence in Sudan, the humanitarian requirements of the country’s children were high, with an estimated three-quarters of children living in extreme poverty.

Simultaneously, 11.5 million children and community members required emergency water and sanitation services, 7 million children were out of school, and over 600,000 children were severely malnourished.

WHO’s medicinal product advisories were quickly distributed to all 194 WHO Member States’ national health authorities. These medical product alerts requested (a) the detection and removal of contaminated medicines from circulation in the markets, (b) increased surveillance and diligence within the supply chains of countries and regions likely to be affected, (c) immediate notification to WHO if these substandard products are discovered in-country, and (d) public education about the dangers and toxic effects of these substandard medicines.

These are not isolated events, hence WHO urges medical supply chain stakeholders to respond immediately and collaboratively.

WHO advice to Regulators and governments:

Detect and remove from circulation in their respective markets any substandard medical products that have been identified in the WHO medical alerts referred to above as potential causes of deaths and disease; ensure that all medical products in their markets are approved for sale by competent authorities and obtainable from authorized/licensed suppliers;
allocate resources to strengthen and increase risk-based inspections of manufacturing locations in their authority in compliance with international norms and regulations;
increase market surveillance, including risk-based targeted testing for medical products released in their respective markets, including informal markets; and enact and enforce laws and other relevant legal measures to combat the manufacture, distribution, and use of substandard and falsified medicines.

WHO advice to only purchase pharmaceutical grade excipients from qualified and bona fide suppliers; conduct comprehensive testing upon receipt of supplies and before use in manufacture of finished products; provide assurance of product quality including certificates of analyses based on appropriate testing results; and keep accurate, complete, and proper records of material purchase, testing, manufacture, and distribution to facilitate traceability during investigations.
Medical goods vendors and distributors should:

always check for signs of falsification and physical condition of medicines and other health products they distribute and/or sell; only distribute and/or sell medicines authorised by, and from sources approved by, competent authorities; keep accurate, complete, and proper records relating to the medicines and their distribution sale; and employ competent personnel to handle medicines and advise the public on their proper use.In addition, WHO will continue to cooperate with the Member State Mechanism on substandard and fraudulent medical products to encourage effective collaboration in the prevention, detection, and response to these items to save lives.

According to the weekly report provided by the World Health Organization on January 15th, China reported the greatest number of COVID-19 hospitalisations since the beginning of the pandemic.

Tedros said he understood why many countries have recently taken steps to stop their citizens from travelling to China. He said, “It’s understandable that some countries are taking steps to stop their citizens” because not much is known about Covid-19.

How other countries test:

Dr. Michael Ryan, who is in charge of emergencies at the WHO, said that the testing rules that some countries have in place do not stop people from travelling.
“We think that some countries’ restrictions on China’s entry are not based on science, and some countries’ practises that go too far are even worse,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a briefing on Tuesday.

Continuing concerns:

Ryan from the WHO also said that there are still concerns about how Chinese officials are recording coronavirus deaths. He said that their definition, which only counts Covid-19 deaths if there is a record of respiratory failure, is too narrow.

Even though there were many thousands of cases every day and reports of hospitals, fever clinics, and crematoriums being full, China only had 13 official Covid-19 deaths in December.

Based on information shared by the Chinese government, such as genetic sequences that have been put into a public database, a WHO expert group said on Wednesday that no new dangerous Covid variants have been found in China.

The WHO said that Chinese scientists have now shared more than 770 sequences. More than 97% of all local infections are caused by omicron subvariants BA.5 and their offspring. About 68% of all sequences in the world are BA.5 variants.

The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said that it didn’t think the increase in Covid-19 in China would affect the outbreak in Europe because so many people in Europe had been vaccinated.

It also said that the variants that were spreading in China were already in Europe, which suggests that any spread from China wouldn’t make much of a difference.

The WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19, Maria Van Kerkhove, said that the organisation was currently figuring out how important the XBB.1.5 variant is, which is showing up in more and more cases in the US.

Van Kerkhove said, “Our worry is how easy it is to spread.” “The more this virus spreads, the more likely it is to change,” she said, adding that more waves of transmission don’t have to mean more deaths because there are so many vaccines and medicines available.

Van Kerkhove said that there isn’t enough evidence yet to show that XBB.1.5 makes diseases worse, but that the WHO is working on a new risk assessment of the variant that should be out soon.

“It’s not too much based on how each country evaluates its own risk,” Ryan said.

He said that China has had some of the strictest rules in the world about Covid-19 for the past three years. “The reality for China is that many countries now feel they don’t have enough information on which to base their risk assessment,” he said.
