Australia cruised to a 209-run victory over India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, scoring numerous runs and securing 20 wickets to win their first WTC title. The Australian team had set India a target of 444, and while it was always a tall order, the positive start made by openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma gave the team hope.

Gill edged a delivery pitched outside off by Scot Boland, which was spectacularly caught by Cameron Green at gully, bringing an abrupt end to the initial partnership between the two players. The tall all-rounder dove to his left and snatched a world record and promptly began to celebrate, but the umpires were skeptical. The issue was escalated, and after a protracted review, the third umpire controversially ruled in favor of the team.

Indian fans, ex-cricketers, and players argued in social media clips and images that Green’s capture was not clean because he had grounded the ball during the process.

Soon after the conclusion of play on day 4, Gill took to social media to express his displeasure, posting a still image of the ball impacting the ground alongside a series of sarcastic applause emojis. His opening partner and captain, Rohit, was seen earlier discussing the judgment with the on-field umpires after Australia won.

Even after a collapse early on Day 5 gave Australia a resounding victory in the fourth innings chase, the controversy surrounding Green’s attempt to seize the ball remained at the forefront of discussions.

The Australian captain elaborated on his perspective of the capture and the decision made by TV umpire Richard Kettleborough during the press conference.

“I believed it to be a fair capture. Green was an absolute monster, and we are evidently just players. We’re on the field, so we leave it in the hands of the umpire, who is, in my opinion, the best in the world because he understands the rule books and has seen every angle. Cummins stated, “I’d probably support his decision more than emotional, ardent fans observing a large screen from 100 meters away.”

Rohit, Cummins’ opponent, had a different account of the incident and complained that the umpire was not utilizing technology to its utmost potential. “The third umpire should have viewed a few more replays to see how the capture was held. I believe he saw it three or four times, and he was persuaded,” the Indian captain said in the post-match press conference.

“More camera angles ought to have been displayed. Approximately one or two camera angles were displayed. IPL has ten distinct angles. I was a little dismayed that no ultra-motion or zoomed images were shown during a global event of this magnitude.

India and Australia will square off in the World Test Championship final at the Oval in London beginning on Wednesday, June 7. Since India has not won an ICC title since 2013, it will be difficult for them to capture the mace and end their trophy drought. A journalist reminded captain Rohit Sharma of the same thing before the major game, which angered him.

During the press conference preceding the final, a journalist asked the Indian captain whether the lack of an ICC championship since 2013 adds additional burden to the players. Sharma gave the reporter a stern response, stating that the team is well cognizant of what they’ve won and lost.

“We are aware of the accomplishments and failures of the team. Sharma was quoted by SportsTiger as saying, “It is useless to simply dwell on it over and over again.”

The 36-year-old added that he was asked the same question during the T20 World Cup 2022, and that the team management and all the players are concentrating on the forthcoming match to achieve the best possible result.

Notably, India has reached at least the semifinals of every ICC tournament since 2014, with the exception of the T20 World Cup 2021. However, a championship has eluded the premier cricketing nation as they have repeatedly fallen short in either the semifinals or the finals.

Therefore, the Rohit Sharma-led team will be keen to end their trophy drought by winning the WTC final in their second attempt after losing the inaugural final to New Zealand by eight wickets.

Since 2017, India has held the advantage over Australia, having won the last four Test series between the two countries. However, they will be without their star players, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, in the big game, which could hurt their chances of capturing the championship.

Since his international debut for the Asian powers, India’s young opening batter Shubman Gill’s stock has been on the rise, with the stylish opener reaching new heights since the beginning of the year across all formats. The youngster has been deemed the “Prince” to Virat Kohli’s “King,” and the former Indian captain is eager to assist him in his cricketing career.

While all eyes will be on former Indian captain Virat Kohli in the World Test Championship Final against Australia, an in-form Shubman Gill can play a crucial role for the runner-ups of the previous tournament. Prior to India’s championship match against Australia, Kohli acknowledged the labels the duo has received from Indian supporters, but he believes he has a greater responsibility for the team’s younger players.

“These titles of king and prince and the like are wonderful for the public and spectators to see, but I believe it is the responsibility of every senior player to help improve the younger players and impart the wisdom you have gained throughout your career.

As long as a man is eager to learn like him, he will be good, as he wants to learn how to perform at the highest level for an extended period of time. Virat Kohli was quoted by the ICC as saying, “I hope he continues to play so well in this Test match, as he is a wonderful young man.”

He possesses extraordinary talent and the temperament to execute at the highest level: Kohli

The former Indian captain discussed Gill’s rise over the past few years and praised the opener’s temperament at the highest level. Kohli also stated that the two share a special connection and mutual respect based on their shared history.

“He has incredible talent and the temperament to perform at the highest level, and he is confident, and we do have that relationship and that mutual respect,” Kohli added.

Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has identified Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as the two players who will be crucial to India’s success in the World Test Championship Final against Australia at the Oval.

The former cricketer believes it will be a difficult task for the Indian openers to stop a quality Australian fast bowling unit in English conditions due to the substantial sideways movement available to seamers. Jaffer believes that Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, with their speed and accuracy, will pose a significant threat to the Indian batters, particularly the openers, despite the absence of Josh Hazlewood in the final.

“Openers will play an enormous role. England is the most difficult country to bowl in due to the sideways movement. Because of the weather, conditions vary so drastically. It varies rapidly. The duke’s gala also presents numerous challenges. As the ball ages, it continues to swing and begins to reverse direction. With Starc and Cummins operating at 145 kilometers per hour, it will be difficult,” Jaffer told The Indian Express.

The only cause for concern is that they have played so much Twenty20 cricket: Jaffer

Jaffer expressed concern regarding the dearth of practice matches in India’s preparation for the highly anticipated match. Following two months of T20 cricket, the former opener believes it may be difficult for a number of Indian players to adjust to the format of the upcoming match. Since the conclusion of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, none of the Indian batsmen have participated in any red-ball matches, with the exception of senior batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.

Also See | It will suit India if they play two spinners in WTC final : Monty Panesar

“Things are looking positive, but the only concern is that they have played so much Twenty20 cricket in the past two months, making it difficult for them to adjust fast with only four or five days of preparation and no match practice. Jaffer concluded, “I am confident that modern cricketers have mastered the ability to make this switch quickly.”

Former England cricketer Monty Panesar wants India to field two spinners in the June 7 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval. Notably, the world’s top-ranked Test side has rarely played two spinners on English soil in the past, so it will be intriguing to see if both Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin make the starting XI for the championship match.

In the meantime, Panesar anticipates that the pitch at The Oval will favor batsmen and thus believes that it will be ideal for the Rohit Sharma-led team to utilize both of their senior spinners, as the pitch also aids spinners. The 41-year-old also stated that Australia has historically struggled against India’s spin duo in Test cricket and that the pitch will alter on the fourth and fifth day, favoring spinners.

“On this particular pitch in England, two spinners are typically used.” If the ball spins, spinners will also experience rebound. In my opinion, the pitch will be level. In these conditions, India would benefit from playing two spinners. Australia has previously struggled against spinners, particularly those from India. I also don’t see them maintaining lawn because they want the match to last at least four days, Panesar was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

I would choose Umesh Yadav as the third seamer.

Panesar wants India to trust Umesh Yadav alongside Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj in the pace department. He also stated that the ball will reverse at The Oval, which could be advantageous for Indian bowlers, and that Umesh’s quick pace can be a problem for Australian batsmen.

“It will also be fascinating to see who the seamers are, as they have a variety of options. In my opinion, India is the superior party on all fronts. As Ashwin and Jadeja will increase their batting options, I would choose Umesh as the third pacer. Rohit can approach him with the request, “I want you to bowl five overs at 140 mph or more and rough up the Australian batters.” You will need that additional speed.

“The ball does reverse at The Oval, and we’ve seen how proficient the Indian bowlers are at reverse spin. They are able to handle the ball more than the Australian pacers. This contest is India’s to lose,” Panesar stated.

Team India will return to action on June 7 when it faces Australia in the World Test Championship final. The Rohit Sharma-led squad will be looking to erase the memory of India’s failure to New Zealand in the inaugural WTC in 2021, when India was captained by Virat Kohli. This year, however, there is an additional significant concern for the team heading into the final: Rohit’s form.

Rohit, a 36-year-old star opener, had a disappointing 2023 Indian Premier League season. Although he led the Mumbai Indians to the semifinals, his batting performances left much to be desired. Rohit scored 332 runs in 16 matches for the team at an average of 20.75 and a strike rate of 132.

Sanjay Manjrekar, a former India batsman, believes the team management should not be concerned about Rohit’s form because the opener is at ease in Test cricket.

“Ignore his IPL form, as he appeared out of form in the previous IPL as well… we witnessed his incredible batting performance in the first Test against Australia.” Test cricket appears to be the most thrilling format for Rohit Sharma at this point in his career, just as it has always been for Virat Kohli, Manjrekar told Star Sports.

“His current batting performance in Test cricket is nearly flawless. Only one issue has been observed during test matches: he is occasionally dismissed while playing the draw shot. They have delivered him a short ball while maintaining a fielder in place. This is an involuntary injection.”

Manjrekar went on to describe how Rohit utilizes his follow-through to generate momentum for his pull shot.

“If you observe him in ODI cricket, his draw shot is quite intriguing. His back lift does not originate from above, allowing him to play the ball down. “He has a very low back lift; he simply picks up the ball, and in the follow-through, the bat goes behind his back to generate power,” Manjrekar explained.

In fact, Rohit had a worse IPL season in 2022, when he failed to surpass the 300-run mark and scored only 265 runs in 14 matches. Rohit’s last season with 400+ runs was in 2019, when he scored 405 runs in 15 outings.

WTC Final: On March 13, the week-long suspense came to an end. India qualified for the World Test Championship final for the second consecutive year prior to the conclusion of their final Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against Australia in Ahmedabad. India advanced to the final after Sri Lanka, who was also in contention for the championship match, lost the first of their two-Test series in New Zealand on Monday in a nail-biting conclusion.

From June 7 to 11, India will face Australia in the WTC final at the Oval in London. Australia qualified for the final after defeating India in the third Test in Indore earlier this month. India had to avoid losing more than one Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and pray that New Zealand did not lose their home Test series 2-0.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test Day 5 Highlights

As it turned out, India’s participation in the London final was secured even before they took the field on Day 5 of the Ahmedabad Test, as Sri Lanka lost the opening Test to New Zealand on the final day of play.

They'll take on Australia at The Oval for the #WTC23 mace!

India qualified for the WTC final in 2021 under the leadership of Virat Kohli, but lost to New Zealand in the championship match. Notably, this will be India’s second major ICC tournament in 2023, as the ODI World Cup will be contested at home in October and November.

After Australia reached the final, only India and Sri Lanka remained in contention for the WTC final in the second week of March, but the islanders’ valiant effort in the Christchurch Test was insufficient to keep their prospects alive.Indian spectators were genuinely interested in the Sri Lanka-New Zealand first Test at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, where the islanders put up a valiant fight in the series opener.

Sri Lanka posted 355 runs in their first innings, but Daryl Mitchell’s astonishing century helped New Zealand take an 18-run lead after the first innings. Sri Lanka were in trouble when they lost four wickets early, but senior batsman Angelo Matthews helped them set a formidable target of 285.

The first Test in Christchurch was set up for a thrilling finish, while the second Test in Ahmedabad, which was contested on a flat surface, was headed towards a draw despite India’s response of 571 runs to Australia’s first innings total of 480.

The loss of New Zealand’s opener Devon Conway early on Day 4 and Sri Lanka’s dismissal of Tom Latham early on Monday put the Kiwis in a precarious position. However, Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell held for 142 runs.

Wednesday, the ICC confirmed the final date for the second edition of the ICC WTC Final. The summit clash will be played from 7 to 11 June at The Oval, London, with a reserve day in place (12 June). By defeating India by eight wickets in Southampton in 2021, New Zealand won the maiden edition of the competition.

Australia tops the current cycle’s points table with a points percentage of 75.56, followed by India with 58.93. The Border-Gavaskar trophy series is due to begin on Thursday, with the outcome of the series playing a significant role in determining this year’s Oval finalist.

According to the official website of the International Cricket Council, Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins stated that participating in the WTC final has been a major motivator for the team over the years.

Cummins stated that the prospect of playing in the World Test Championship Final has been a major incentive for the team over the past several years, especially after missing out on over rates last time.

Mark your calendars 🗓

The dates for the ICC World Test Championship Final later this year have been revealed 🤩#WTC23https://t.co/gOJcoWVc58

— ICC (@ICC) February 8, 2023

“Playing at a neutral location such as The Oval provides a new dimension to the Final for both teams. It is thrilling and has been a long-term objective of ours. After a very successful year, we are optimistic that we can establish a position while in India. The Final would be an excellent reward for the talented players and staff.”

Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, stated that taking the team out for the final would be an honour and that he is eager to qualify for the championship match.

“It would be an honour to lead Team India into the field for the World Test Championship Final. We have matured and improved as a team during this campaign, and we know that to have a chance of winning the Mace at the Oval in June, we must first defeat a formidable Australia squad.”

There have been plenty dramatic moments in recent Test cricket, and there will definitely be more. Sharma stated, “I am excited at the thought of securing our spot in the Final and, possibly, making history later in the year.”

Third-place Sri Lanka (53.33%) and fourth-place South Africa (48.72%) also have a chance of reaching the Oval final. Sri Lanka have two remaining away Tests against New Zealand, while South Africa will play a two-match home series against the West Indies.

HOW CAN INDIA QUALIFY FOR ICC WTC Final?

This is the question everyone is asking prior to the Border-Gavaskar trophy match. When it comes to the WTC finals, the Indian team will be aiming to make it two wins in a row and will be vying for the mace this time.

Australia has essentially secured their berth in the summit match, so Rohit Sharma and his team have their work cut out for them.

If India wins a single match out of four, the PCT will be 51.39. It will increase to 56.9 if they win two games and 62.5 if they win three or more. If South Africa wins the home series against West Indies, they could earn a maximum of 55.50 points. Therefore, India must win the series with a score of 2-0 to secure a ticket in the ICC WTC final.
