MIW vs RCBW: Mumbai Indians ended their two-match losing streak by claiming victory in their final group-stage match of the Women’s Premier League 2023 on March 21. MI chased down a target of 126 runs with four wickets remaining in 16.3 overs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

The Mumbai Indians have maintained their prospects of securing a direct berth in the final by reclaiming the top spot in the 5-team points table. It was MI’s sixth victory of the season, coming as they ended a two-match losing sequence.

If Delhi Capitals lose their final encounter against UP Warriorz later on Tuesday, Mumbai Indians will advance directly to the championship match. On Monday, Delhi defeated MI by nine wickets in a top-of-the-table match.

Mumbai Indians relied on a collective batting effort, with all-rounder Amelia Kerr’s unbeaten 31 leading the batting rankings. After the table-toppers suffered a mid-overs collapse, losing Harmanpreet Kaur (2) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (13), Kerr teamed up with Pooja Vastrakar for a 47-run partnership. Vastrakar contributed 19 runs to the effort.

In the powerplay earlier in the day, Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia provided Mumbai with a sturdy opening stand of 53 runs. In Shreyanka Patil’s final delivery of the powerplay, Mumbai lost Yastika. Hayley was eventually dismissed by Megan Schut in the eighth over, after the West Indies opener received a reprieve when Sophie Devine ran her out for overstepping during the powerplay.

In the middle overs, Mumbai lost four wickets for only 19 runs, but the partnership between Kerr and Vastrakar allowed them to cross the finish line.

RCB reached 125 for 9 in 20 overs thanks to useful contributions from Smriti Mandhana (24) and Ellyse Perry (29 off 38) earlier in the day. Richa Ghosh’s powerful hitting (29 runs off 13 balls with 2 sixes and 3 boundaries) enabled them surpass 120 runs.

GG vs UPW: Gujarat got off to a solid start with the bat after Sneh Rana won the toss and elected to bat first under the sun and on a flat pitch. Laura Wolvaardt and Sophia Dunkley, however, fell in rapid succession, putting them on the defensive. Then, a remarkable 93-run partnership between Dayalan Hemalatha and Ashleigh Gardner ensued, with both batters reaching fifty.

The fact that neither of them were able to remain until the end meant that Gujarat had to settle for 178 runs. Anjali Sarvani and Sophie Ecclestone were outstanding with the ball for UP. Rajeshwari Gayakwad bowled well for her two wickets, but it was the novice Parshavi Chopra’s double breakthrough that truly changed the course of the game. In the chase, UP was able to recover from a poor start due to two sensational innings from Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris, and they went on to win the game.

Gujarat did everything they could, but it was not enough. After accumulating a respectable score, they got off to a good start as the pacesetters, Kim Garth and Monica Patel, made early advances. However, they were unable to maintain pressure during the middle overs, and the opposing batsmen targeted their spinners. Ashleigh Gardner and Kim Garth both bowled well to bring their team back into the contest. Sneh Rana bowled a tidy final over, but conceded the winning boundary with one delivery remaining.

UP have successfully qualified for the semifinals. It was a high-octane pursuit because they lost three wickets early and had to rebuild. Then, a massive partnership of 78 runs between Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris put them in a favourable position. McGrath was the one who easily located the fence and reached fifty before exiting.

UP fell into a bit of a slump after she was dismissed, but Grace Harris remained unfazed and struck the ball superbly before being dismissed on 72. As she did the previous time, Sophie Ecclestone supported Harris well and completed the game with a level head.

WPL 2023 UP vs MI:On Saturday, the UP Warriorz ended the winning sequence of Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians by defeating them by five wickets thanks to their disciplined performance in the WPL 2023.

Sophie Ecclestone was the hero of the show for UPW, taking three wickets and scoring the game-winning runs.UP Warrriorz won the toss and elected to bowl first on the given day. The Mumbai Indians started slowly and lost the in-form Yastika Bhatia for only seven runs.

Nat Sciver-Brunt also failed to make an impression with the bat as MI were reduced to 39 for two in 7.2 overs due to the pressure exerted by the UPW bowlers.

Hayley Matthews was the next to be dismissed for 30 runs, leaving MI labouring at the halfway point. Harmanpreet Kaur steadied the ship for some time until she and Amelia Kerr were dismissed consecutively, leaving the league leaders floundering at 78 for five. Wong played a crucial 32 off 19 deliveries to help MI reach 127, but she did not receive sufficient support from the tail on this particular day. Eccelstone was the best bowler for UPW on the day, with figures of 3 for 15.

Harmanpreet, the captain of UP Warriorz, caught Devika Vaidya with just one run on the board, which was the worst possible start for the team.Alyssa Healy was the next to fall for UPW as MI appeared to be in the lead at the time. Similarly, Kiran Navgire failed to make an impression with the bat as UPW reached 27 for three in 6.1 overs.

Then, Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris forged a crucial 45-run partnership, with the former being the aggressor at the time. McGrath scored 38 off of 25 deliveries before being dismissed by Amelia Kerr.

Harris then assumed responsibility and began to play freely, making the equation simple for UPW. However, Kerr returned to dismiss Harris for 39, creating an intriguing situation with UPW needing 23 runs off 26 deliveries.

After a close over from Ishaque, Eccelstone was able to score a boundary off Kerr’s over, bringing the equation to 13 runs off 12 overs as the final overs approached. After scoring eight more runs in the following over, five were required off the final six deliveries. Ecclestone missed the first two deliveries because Wong was exactly on target as tensions between the two camps grew.

In 20 overs, Gujarat Giants scored 107/9 while chasing 163 runs. With this 55-run victory over GG, Mumbai Indians qualified for the playoffs as the first team. It is Mumbai Indians’ fifth consecutive victory in the WPL.

Nat Sciver-Brunn provided her team with the wicket of Sophia Dunkley for a duck in the first over of the Mumbai Indians’ innings as they attempted to defend a total of 163 runs.

The right-handed batswoman Harleen Deol then stepped up to the plate. In the sixth over of the game, Hayley Matthews struck twice against Gujarat, removing Sabbhineni Meghana and Annabel Sutherland. Meghana returned after scoring 16 while Sutherland retreated after scoring a duck.

Issy Wong ended Deol’s sublime innings at the crease by dismissing her for 22 runs. Gujarat continued to lose wickets at regular intervals as the formidable bowling attack of Mumbai dismantled them.

Amelia Kerr joined the Mumbai Indians’ string of wicket-takers in the tenth over when she sent Ashleigh Gardner back to the dugout for eight runs.

At this point, Mumbai dominated Gujarat to the point where they were forced to play careless shots and lose wickets.

In the 15th over of the match, Sneh Rana attempted to hit Nat Sciver-Brunt for a couple of boundaries but was also trapped LBW. She returned having scored 20 out of 19

Then, right-handed batter Kim Garth stepped up to the plate. Nat Sciver-Brunn took her third wicket, sending Garth back to the pavilion for 8 runs, after a spectacular catch by Harmanpreet Kaur, who dove forward at mid-off.

Matthews dismissed Tanuja Kanwar for a duck in the 18th over of the match. In the final over of the game, Gujarat scored only two runs against Saika Ishaque, giving Mumbai a 55-run victory at the Brabourne Stadium.

Earlier, Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur contributed to Mumbai Indians’ 162/8 total against Gujarat Giants.

Harmanpreet scored the most runs for Mumbai Indians with 51 off 30 balls, while Bhatia scored crucial runs with 44 off 37 balls. Ashleigh Gardner took three wickets for the Gujarat Giants, while Kim Garth, Sneh Rana, and Tanuja Kanwar each took one.

Opted to bowl first, the Gujarat Ginats team got off to a flying start as Ashleigh Gardner provided her team with a big wicket. Gardner struck first by dismissing Hayley Matthews for a duck off three balls in the first over of the match.

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Yastika Bhatia then handled the charge as they slammed Gardner for 11 runs with the help of two magnificent fours.

In the eleventh over of the match, Kim Garth gave her team a crucial wicket by dismissing Nat Sciver-Brunn. Sciver-Brunt, the star batsman for Gujarat, returned to the pavilion after scoring 36 runs off 31 deliveries.

Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur then came out to bat on the crease. In the 12th over, Yastika Bhatia continued her assault by smashing Tanuja Kanwar for a boundary and scoring 9 runs.

Sneh Rana then came to bowl the thirteenth over and got an inside edge off the first ball from Yastika Bhatia, who ran off without looking at her partner, Harmanpreet. She then tried to take run back but a good throw, straight at the wicketkeeper resulted in a run-out. Bhatia returned to the pavilion after scoring 44 runs in 37 balls.

The right-handed batter Amelia Kerr then stepped up to the plate, and together with the team’s captain, Harmanpreet, smashed 9 runs off Sneh Rana with the assistance of stunning boundaries.

Harmanpreet and Kerr smashed Gujarat bowlers all over the field while collecting singles on a regular basis. However, Kerr’s red-hot form at the crease came to an end when she was dismissed for 19 runs by Tanuja Kanwar in WPL.

Sneh Rana then dealt Mumbai a second blow by replacing Issy Wong with a duck. Harmanpreet shifted gears and smashed Annabel Sutherland for 14 runs by hitting two spectacular sixes.

Harmanpreet brought up her 29-ball half-century after slamming back-to-back two boundaries, however, her stint at the crease was cut short Gardner removed her for 51 runs in the last over of the game (WPL).

In the same over, Gardner dealt another blow to Mumbai by dismissing the new batter Amanjot Kaur for a duck, limiting Mumbai India to 162/8.

Deandra Dottin ruled out: Gujarat Giants received a major setback ahead of their campaign opener against Mumbai Indians after West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin was ruled out of the WPL 2023. Dottin is recovering from a medical situation and has not yet regained her fitness. Dottin was purchased at auction by Giants for INR 60 lakh after bidding began at INR 50 lakh.

Australian Kim Garth has been named as her replacement in the squad. The right-hand batter had gone unsold at the auction last month. She was part of the Australia side that won the T20 World Cup in South Africa at the time of the auction.

Before the World Cup, Garth only played two warm-up games, one of which was against her previous team, Ireland. On Friday, she joined the Giants’ practise squad.

Saturday evening at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the Giants face the Mumbai Indians in the first match of the WPL. Beth Mooney, who was named Player of the Match in the World Cup final for her immaculate 74 off 53 balls, will lead them.

Each of the five teams will play each other twice over the course of the 22-game season before two semi-finals determine the top two teams for the March 27 championship game. In its inaugural season, five teams—Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz—spent lavishly to acquire the finest international and domestic players.
