India’s WTC 2023-25 Schedule: Team India completed the 2021-23 cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) on top of the standings, but fell short in the championship match. India, which last claimed an International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy in 2013, had high hopes for this year’s competition. The Rohit Sharma-led team was defeated by Australia in the WTc final on June 11 at The Oval in London, marking India’s second consecutive failure in the championship match.

Team India invited Pat Cummins and co. to bowl first after winning the toss. Australia scored 469 runs in their first innings thanks to centuries by Travis Head and Steve Smith, indicating that the Indian bowlers failed to impress. In contrast, India scored only 296 points in their first innings.

On the fourth day of the one-off Test, Australia declared their second innings at 270/8 in their second innings. In pursuit of a 444-run target, India batters once again labored with the bat and were bowled out for 234 runs.

In the inaugural WTC final in Southampton in 2021, India faced New Zealand. India was dismissed for 217 and 170 runs in their two innings. In contrast, the Black Caps advanced to an eight-wicket victory despite being dismissed for 249 runs in their first innings.

India’s WTC 2023-25 schedule

Team India will commence its WTC 2023-25 cycle with two Tests against West Indies, which will be played in Dominica from July 12 to July 16 and in Trinidad from July 20 to July 24.

India will play two Tests in South Africa between December 2023 and January 2024. In January and February of 2024, Rohit Sharma and company will host five Tests against England. In September and October of 2024, India will host Bangladesh for two Test matches.

New Zealand will play three Tests in India in October and November 2024, following Bangladesh’s visit. In addition to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia, Team India’s WTC 2023-25 cycle incorporates the Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia. Between November 2024 and January 2025, India will participate in five Tests.

Indian supporters are devastated as their team once again failed to perform in the elimination stages of an ICC competition. India finished second in the WTC final for the second consecutive year, as Pat Cummins’ Australia defeated them by a colossal 209 runs.

Australia scored 327 runs with only three wickets lost on the first day of the match, putting India in a precarious position. Travis Head scored a century, while Steve Smith remained unblemished with 95 runs. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj were unable to impress on a verdant pitch. On Day 2, however, India was able to restrict Australia’s score from 361/3 to 469 all out. According to former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, India’s dearth of intent with the ball on Day 1 allowed Australia to advance.

“Mohammad Siraj delivered a delivery to Steve Smith in the first session of Day 2 of the WTC final, after which India’s bowling from both ends changed. This was lacking (on Day 1),” Ganguly told Sports Tak.

While Siraj was preparing to deliver the opening over of Day 2, Smith abruptly withdrew from the match for the unseeded. As an expression of his displeasure, the Indian pacer threw the ball towards the custodian.

Australia became the first team to win ICC world championships in all three formats of the game. India made a significant comeback on Day 2, bowling Australia out for 469. However, the Indian batters were unable to reach their full potential against the Australian bowling attack. The team captained by Rohit Sharma surrendered a 173-run lead in the first innings.

Australia declared at 270/8 in their second innings, setting India a formidable victory target of 444 runs. India fought valiantly but was ultimately bowled out before lunch on Day 5.With this crushing victory, Australia became the first team to win ICC world championships in all three formats of the game. In 2021, the five-time ODI World Cup champions won the T20 World Cup for the first time.

Australia cruised to a 209-run victory over India in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval, scoring numerous runs and securing 20 wickets to win their first WTC title. The Australian team had set India a target of 444, and while it was always a tall order, the positive start made by openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma gave the team hope.

Gill edged a delivery pitched outside off by Scot Boland, which was spectacularly caught by Cameron Green at gully, bringing an abrupt end to the initial partnership between the two players. The tall all-rounder dove to his left and snatched a world record and promptly began to celebrate, but the umpires were skeptical. The issue was escalated, and after a protracted review, the third umpire controversially ruled in favor of the team.

Indian fans, ex-cricketers, and players argued in social media clips and images that Green’s capture was not clean because he had grounded the ball during the process.

Soon after the conclusion of play on day 4, Gill took to social media to express his displeasure, posting a still image of the ball impacting the ground alongside a series of sarcastic applause emojis. His opening partner and captain, Rohit, was seen earlier discussing the judgment with the on-field umpires after Australia won.

Even after a collapse early on Day 5 gave Australia a resounding victory in the fourth innings chase, the controversy surrounding Green’s attempt to seize the ball remained at the forefront of discussions.

The Australian captain elaborated on his perspective of the capture and the decision made by TV umpire Richard Kettleborough during the press conference.

“I believed it to be a fair capture. Green was an absolute monster, and we are evidently just players. We’re on the field, so we leave it in the hands of the umpire, who is, in my opinion, the best in the world because he understands the rule books and has seen every angle. Cummins stated, “I’d probably support his decision more than emotional, ardent fans observing a large screen from 100 meters away.”

Rohit, Cummins’ opponent, had a different account of the incident and complained that the umpire was not utilizing technology to its utmost potential. “The third umpire should have viewed a few more replays to see how the capture was held. I believe he saw it three or four times, and he was persuaded,” the Indian captain said in the post-match press conference.

“More camera angles ought to have been displayed. Approximately one or two camera angles were displayed. IPL has ten distinct angles. I was a little dismayed that no ultra-motion or zoomed images were shown during a global event of this magnitude.

Australia have appointed three-time Ashes-winning coach Andy Flower to their backroom staff in preparation for their June 7 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against India at The Oval in London. The five-match series is scheduled to commence on June 16 and conclude on July 31 in England.

Flower, the former captain of Zimbabwe, coached England from 2009 to 2014. He won his first three Ashes matches in 2009, 2010-2011, and 2013. However, he resigned after his team was swept in Australia during the 2013-14 season.

Following Flower’s appointment, Australia’s captain, Cummins, stated that they were privileged to have someone with Flower’s level of experience in their camp for the championship match. The 30-year-old believes Flower has an extensive understanding of English conditions and their opponents, and that his addition will be advantageous.

“[He carries] experience with him, and he is very familiar with these conditions. ESPNcricinfo quoted Cummins as saying, “Hopefully, he knows the opposition, so if he can give us one nugget of information about playing in England that we haven’t considered, then it’s worth it.”

Cummins continued by stating that he believes Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, has collaborated with Flower extensively and that he has witnessed Australia recruit various individuals at different times over the years.

“I believe Andrew [McDonald] has worked with him quite a bit, and you’ve seen us bring in various individuals over the years. We are fortunate to have someone with as much experience as Andy.”

Flower, on the other hand, is unlikely to participate in the buildup to the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston on June 16. ESPNcricinfo reports that the 55-year-old will rejoin the squad in the final phases of the series, possibly prior to the July 6 start of the third Test at Headingley.

Team India will return to action on June 7 when it faces Australia in the World Test Championship final. The Rohit Sharma-led squad will be looking to erase the memory of India’s failure to New Zealand in the inaugural WTC in 2021, when India was captained by Virat Kohli. This year, however, there is an additional significant concern for the team heading into the final: Rohit’s form.

Rohit, a 36-year-old star opener, had a disappointing 2023 Indian Premier League season. Although he led the Mumbai Indians to the semifinals, his batting performances left much to be desired. Rohit scored 332 runs in 16 matches for the team at an average of 20.75 and a strike rate of 132.

Sanjay Manjrekar, a former India batsman, believes the team management should not be concerned about Rohit’s form because the opener is at ease in Test cricket.

“Ignore his IPL form, as he appeared out of form in the previous IPL as well… we witnessed his incredible batting performance in the first Test against Australia.” Test cricket appears to be the most thrilling format for Rohit Sharma at this point in his career, just as it has always been for Virat Kohli, Manjrekar told Star Sports.

“His current batting performance in Test cricket is nearly flawless. Only one issue has been observed during test matches: he is occasionally dismissed while playing the draw shot. They have delivered him a short ball while maintaining a fielder in place. This is an involuntary injection.”

Manjrekar went on to describe how Rohit utilizes his follow-through to generate momentum for his pull shot.

ALSO READ :Adidas unveil team India’s new jerseys for ODI,Test and T20

“If you observe him in ODI cricket, his draw shot is quite intriguing. His back lift does not originate from above, allowing him to play the ball down. “He has a very low back lift; he simply picks up the ball, and in the follow-through, the bat goes behind his back to generate power,” Manjrekar explained.

In fact, Rohit had a worse IPL season in 2022, when he failed to surpass the 300-run mark and scored only 265 runs in 14 matches. Rohit’s last season with 400+ runs was in 2019, when he scored 405 runs in 15 outings.

The Border Gavaskar Trophy is contested by the mighty Australians and the Indian Men in Blue in a Test cricket series. These two cricketing titans engage in cricket battles with alternate editions held in India and Australia.

This year, from February 9 to March 13, four test matches will be played in Nagpur, Delhi, Dharamsala, and Ahmedabad. These matches will comprise the final cycle of WTC 2021-23.

India hosted the inaugural tournament in 1996-97. The trophy is named after cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar and Sir Allan Border, who represent the two competing nations. After 2020-21, the most recent edition will be played beginning on February 9, 2023.

With India attempting to qualify for the WTC Final and Australia attempting to win a series in the subcontinent, let’s examine the top five players who are expected to excel in the upcoming tournament..

Usman Khawaja

Since his return to the squad, he has been one of the most consistent Australian players. Featured in the ICC Test squad as the first-choice opener with over one thousand runs, he is Australia’s greatest hope for the India tour this year, as he is a great spinner and the most conventional cricketer for slow pitches.

Khawaja is currently the eighth-ranked Test player in the world, and only Rishabh Pant (7) is ranked higher among Indian batsmen. This demonstrates how much of a comeback Khawaja has made in recent months. We anticipate that the opener will be one of Australia’s most important players in this upcoming series.

Steve Smith

This name cannot be omitted frequently from cricket testing. Smith is the most consistent performer in Test cricket, with a career batting average exceeding 60. The classic Australian batsman has been an outstanding performer for both Australia and the subcontinent. The middle-order batsman is one of the most dependable pillars of the Australian batting order.

Steve Smith has recently wreaked havoc in the ongoing Big Bash League season. Although it is unfair to compare the Australian batsman’s performances in the shortest and longest formats of the game, it is clear that he has improved, and Team India will be terrified of his enormous potential. We are all aware of Smith’s greatest abilities.

Marnus Labuschagne

Australia’s Labuschagne has been a standout in tests since his debut. Labuschagne is currently the top-ranked Test batsman in the world, having appeared in the ICC Playing 11 for tests for two consecutive years. Labuschagne is currently one of the most formidable test players in the world and a fantastic candidate for Australian cricket.

Marnus Labuschagne has been Australia’s best and most reliable batsman for quite some time, and he demonstrated this in the most recent test series against India. It is anticipated that he will repeat his stellar performances this time.

Shubman Gill

The reliable Indian opener has maximised his opportunities in every format in which he has been given the chance to compete. Gill is currently the most in-form batsman for India, as he has dominated the ODI format like a king and demonstrated equal dominance in the shorter format with a blazing century against New Zealand in the final ODI of the year.

After consolidating his position in limited-overs cricket, it is hoped that Gill will continue his phenomenal form from the 50- and 20-over formats to improve his performance in the longer format. Gill is therefore anticipated to be India’s most promising player, especially in the absence of Rishabh Pant, India’s most consistent test performer.

Virat Kohli Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Virat Kohli has emerged as one of India’s most versatile hitters in the longer format and as the middle order’s anchor. In recent years, Kohli’s performance has not been up to par, but there is no doubt that he has been India’s hottest performer in Tests when the big guns have been ineffective. In Pant’s absence, Virat Kohli would be entrusted with the responsibility of securing the middle order.

Due to his dominant form, Virat Kohli is currently one of India’s most dependable performers for the upcoming series.
