Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young man from Bhadohi who honed his skills on the merciless Mumbai Maidans, enjoyed his finest day on the cricket pitch with an unbeaten century on his debut as India seized complete control on the second day of the opening Test against the West Indies.

Rohit Sharma sacrificed his natural flair en route to his tenth Test century and a record 229-run opening stand with Jaiswal (143 batting, 350 balls) as India batted cautiously but still did well to bat West Indies out of the game, ending the second day on 312 for two.

India only scored 232 runs in 90 overs for the entire day. Jaiswal, who batted for the entirety of the second day, is accompanied by the experienced Virat Kohli (36 batting, 96 deliveries) as the pair added 72 runs for the third wicket. India currently have a 162-run advantage and are expected to bat for the majority of the third day before unleashing Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja on an opponent who lacks the technical ability to counter them for two days.

The batsmen Jaiswal, 21 years old, and Rohit, 36 years old, represent the antithesis of the Mumbai ‘Khadoos’ school of batting. Each is extravagant in their own right.

On Thursday, however, they channelled their inner ‘Khadoos Mumbaikar’ as Jaiswal required 215 balls to become the fourteenth Indian debutant to score a hundred and Rohit required 220 balls to reach the same milestone.

After 41 long years, since India’s 1982 tour of England, where Suru Nayak and Sunil Gavaskar opened, two Mumbai men opened for the country against the West Indies and posted the best ever opening stand of 229, surpassing the previous best of 201 established by Sanjay Bangar and Virender Sehwag in 2001.

The Windsor Park course was a two-pace one where the ball gripped and leisurely turns were available. On such courses, it is challenging to score rapidly, but not too difficult to grind the competition into submission.

It was a prime example of traditional Test match batting. Jaiswal and Rohit performed this action. As none of the West Indies bowlers appeared to be menacing, both batsmen relied on their defensive strategies when faced with threatening deliveries.

Due to the endearing nature of Jaiswal’s rags-to-riches story, his century is sure to generate a reasonable amount of elation among fans.

The young man’s tale of selling Panipuris on Mumbai’s Azad Maidan and scaling the boundary wall to catch a glimpse of the IPL on a giant screen warms one’s heart, and one wishes for his success.

As he appeared to play a half-sweep, half-lap shot towards backward square leg for a single, Jaiswal let out a tremendous bellow of relief and bowed towards the dressing room. The finest of his fourteen fours was the pull off Alzarri Joseph that got him to fifty.

His solid technique, reasonable understanding of where his off-stump was, and assured footwork against spinners stood out. Considering his tremendous patience and choice of loose deliveries, along with his impressive temperament, he appears to be fit for international cricket.

This century demonstrates that he belongs at the international level, but on this track against a weak assault, it is difficult to predict how he would perform in South Africa and Australia.

A free-flowing stroke-maker like Rohit may not have been overly ecstatic despite achieving a century due to the aggressiveness and nature of the pitch.

Rohit’s flicked six over deep mid-wicket off Joseph (0/65 in 14 overs) was worth a million dollars and was the finest shot of the day. Jomel Warrican’s left-arm spinner conceded another uncontested six in the same region, along with a backfoot square cut.

The India captain was dismissed immediately after scoring his tenth Test century when his defensive dart off debutant Alick Athanaze’s off-break was caught by keeper Joshua Da Silva.

As a result of remaining in the dugout with pads on for nearly 76 overs, Shubman Gill’s (6 off 10 balls) first game as No. 3 did not get off to a good start.

After a sluggish first session that produced 66 runs, the second session was the most fruitful with 99 runs, while the third session produced 67 runs.

In fact, the pitch was so slow that Jaiswal could be heard on the stump microphone informing Kohli, “I’m hitting hard, but the ball isn’t moving.” Jaiswal became the third Indian opener to score a century on Test debut, following Shikhar Dhawan (2013) and Prithvi Shaw (2018).

While Dhawan was unable to replicate that afternoon in Mohali in his next 33 games, Shaw, who was the most promising batsman to come out of the Mumbai batting establishment, stumbled after a blistering start to his international career. Jaiswal would believe that this beginning is the foundation for many greater things to come in the future.

Yashasvi Jaiswal would have strolled into the Wankhede Stadium, on that hard and flat deck of his home city, licking his lips on Sunday, given the form he has shown in this IPL season. After enhancing Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) batting performance against Mumbai Indians (MI) with a magnificent century, the Mumbai native strolled off with his bat and helmet raised and bowed.

The left-handed opener’s 124 (62b, 16×4, 8×6) represented more than fifty percent of the visitors’ 212/7, which was insufficient. Suryakumar Yadav’s authoritative 29-ball 55 gave MI wings, and Tim David’s audacious 45 not out in 14 deliveries carried them home with three balls and six wickets to spare. With 17 required from the final over bowled by Jason Holder, the large Australian completed the match with three consecutive sixes.

Jaiswal began his first IPL century with a pair of sixes, the second off Jofra Archer soaring out of the stadium. Archer was on target with his pace (two 148kph deliveries to Jaiswal stood out), but not with his line to Jos Buttler, who required eight deliveries to score a run. Jaiswal made amends by smashing Riley Meredith for four fours in a single over, including several precise drives, as RR raced to 58 in five overs.

Piyush Chawla was pivotal in reversing the visitors’ momentum by getting Buttler to hole out and Devdutt Padikkal caught off a googly, while Arshad Khan dismissed Sanju Samson.

By then, with RR 103/3 after 11 overs, Jaiswal had reached fifty off 32 balls. He only added 21 more for the next fifty. As enterprising was the left-hander’s shotmaking, reverse-sweeping Chawla for six and prancing down for four. Thus, as MI continued to make advancements, Jaiswal kept RR moving forward. Also at the end, he punished Meredith for three consecutive fours that propelled him into the three-figure bracket in the 18th over. Then, he dismissed Archer for consecutive sixes over mid-off and square leg.

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the home team, was dismissed in the second over by a slower delivery from Sandeep Sharma that cut away and left him flummoxed. During a 58-run surge, Cameron Green (44, 26b) assaulted Trent Boult and swept R Ashwin for six. Ishan Kishan holed out to a wide delivery from Ashwin, and Green was bowled by a full ball as MI crossed 100 in the eleventh over.

Yadav began his innings by smacking Ashwin for six with the first delivery he faced, and then proceeded to hit boundaries at will. Kuldeep Sen bore the brunt of Yadav’s arsenal as he ripped him for six, four, four, and five not out in the 13th over, which also saw Tilak Varma’s LBW overturned. Sandeep, racing backwards from short fine leg, plucked Yadav’s top edge off Boult out of thin air with 61 needed off 27. David and Varma however found two boundaries in every subsequent over until David’s three sixes secured the game.

Thursday’s 32-run victory over Chennai Super Kings brought Rajasthan Royals back to winning ways and the top of the Indian Premier League standings after consecutive losses.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 43-ball 77 at the top of the order and Dhruv Jurel’s (34 off 15) and Devdutt Padikkal’s (27* off 13) late-innings pyrotechnics helped Rajasthan Royals post 202/5 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, the highest-ever IPL total in Jaipur.

Despite Shivam Dube’s 52 off 33 balls, CSK were unable to take the lead in the chase and were limited to 170/6. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and company dropped to second place as RR completed a season-long double over them.

Jaiswal was in superb form from the start. He struck three fours off the first four balls bowled by the left-arm pacer, Akash Singh, before hitting three fours and a six off the left-arm pacer in the second over. On his way to his third fifty of the season, the left-handed batsman once again demonstrated why he is one of the most promising Indian players.

Rajasthan reached 85/0 in eight overs despite Jos Buttler’s relatively poor batting performance (27 runs off 21 balls). Prior to Tushar Deshpande’s dismissal of Jaiswal and captain Sanju Samson (17 runs off 17 balls) in the 14th over, England’s ace opener fell in the ninth over. Soon after, Shimron Hetmyer also fell inexpensively (8 off 10) to make matters worse for RR.

From the 14th to the 17th over, Chennai had a strong period, allowing only 28 runs. Thanks to Jurel and Padikkal, RR was able to score 49 runs in the final three overs to mount a spirited comeback.

Maheesh Theekshana (1/24) bowled with excellent skill and control, whereas his Sri Lankan teammate Matheesha Pathirana (0/48) was costly.

In response, CSK posted their lowest powerplay total of the season (42/1) as Sandeep Sharma, in particular, performed superbly by allowing only eight runs in two overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad continued his impressive run and scored 47 runs off 29 balls before being dismissed by Adam Zampa in the tenth over.

In the eleventh over, R Ashwin removed the in-form Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu within three deliveries. This was a pivotal juncture in the match. CSK required a partnership after being reduced to 73/4, and Shivam Dube and Moeen Ali (23 off 12) provided it quickly.

Dube went on to score his third consecutive fifty and hit four sixes during his innings to give CSK a glimmer of hope. In the end, however, the target proved to be too large as RR bowled with discipline and allowed only 45 runs in the final five overs. Dube and Ravindra Jadeja (23* off 15) pieced together 46 runs for the sixth wicket, but it was insufficient.

Zampa was the most effective bowler with 3/22, while Sharma returned wicketless but bowled a high-quality spell of 0/24.
