11 killed in Pakistan after 6.6 magnitude earthquake strikes in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Atleast eleven people were killed in Pakistan after 6.6 magnitude earthquake on the Richter struck Afghanistan.

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 100, according to the Associated Press. According to reports, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China, and Kyrgyzstan were among the countries affected by the quake.

Last night, the earthquake was also felt in Delhi-NCR and throughout much of northern India.

National Centre for Seismology reported that a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck 133 kilometres south-southeast of Fayzabad, Afghanistan at 10:17 p.m. IST. The epicentre of the magnitude 6.5 earthquake, according to the US Geological Survey, was 40 kilometres (25 miles) south-southeast of Jurm in Afghanistan’s mountainous Hindukush region, which borders Pakistan and Tajikistan.

The disaster mitigation ministry of Afghanistan told Reuters that at least two persons were killed in the province of Laghman. At least nine people were killed in neighbouring Pakistan, including a 13-year-old girl whose house wall collapsed, and at least 100 others were injured.

More than 100 individuals in a state of shock were transported to hospitals in the Swat valley region of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s emergency services told the Associated Press.

“These terrified people collapsed, and some of them did so because of the earthquake’s shock,” he explained.Tuesday night, Faizi and other officials reported that nine people were murdered when roofs collapsed in various regions of northwestern Pakistan during the earthquake.

Shahbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, stated that he instructed disaster management officials to remain vigilant at all times.

STRONG TREMORS IN NORTH INDIA

Strong tremors of the earthquake were detected in several North Indian states, including Delhi-NCR. The earthquake was also felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal responded to the earthquake via Twitter: “Strong vibrations were felt throughout Delhi-NCR. Wishing you all safety.”

“The depth of the fault was more than 150 kilometers,” a senior seismologist told PTI, explaining why people in northwest India and Delhi felt the tremors for a relatively extended period of time. He further explained that people in northern India first felt the primary waves and then the secondary waves.
