Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, and Jhye Richardson all returned from injury layoffs as Australia named a formidable 16-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India. Australia will use the short series between March 17 and March 22 as preparation for the upcoming World Cup. The venues for the matches are Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, and Chennai.
Maxwell, who fractured his leg and underwent surgery in November after slipping and falling at a friend’s 50th birthday party, returned to action for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield this week, demonstrating his fitness. Marsh, who subsequently underwent surgery for a chronic left ankle issue, is expected to play this weekend for Western Australia in the Marsh One-Day Cup. Richardson, a right-arm pacer, has also rejoined the squad after recovering from a hamstring injury. In addition, the 26-year-old has not played for Australia since the white-ball leg of their Sri Lanka tour in 2017.

“Glenn, Mitchell, and Jhye are all significant contributors to what we anticipate the squad to look like in October,” said selection chief George Bailey.
The ODI squad includes captain Pat Cummins (family illness), David Warner (hairline fracture in left elbow), and Ashton Agar (poor form), who all returned home after the second Test in Delhi. Cummins will return prior to the third Test, while Warner and Agar will join the squad prior to the ODI series.
However, pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood was not selected because he also returned home early with an Achilles injury. “It would be fantastic for Josh to be a part of this series, but we have taken a conservative approach in anticipation of a very important winter in England, in which he will play a crucial role,” Bailey said.
It is the first of two bilateral one-day series Australia will play in India prior to the World Cup, the second of which will take place in September, just before the tournament.
These matches in India are a vital part of our preparation for the World Cup, which begins in just over seven months.
