Veteran theatre and film actor Javed Khan Amrohi passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in this city from lung failure, according to his director Ramesh Talwar. He was best known for his parts in the famous DD series “Nukkad” and movies like “Lagaan” and “Chak De! India.”
He had just turned 70.
The legendary actor was incapacitated for the previous year due to a respiratory condition. According to Talwar, he was receiving care at the Surya Nursing Home in a Mumbai neighbourhood.
He said, “He died at the hospital about 1 pm when both of his lungs collapsed.
Amrohi’s longtime friend and co-star in “Lagaan,” actor Akhilendra Mishra, said that he had been ill for a while.
“In theatre, he was my senior. Since the 1970s, he has been an active member of IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) Mumbai, according to Mishra, who spoke to PTI.
He further said that the actor’s funeral services will be held at the Oshiwara Kabristan at 7.30 p.m.
Amrohi began his career in theatre after receiving his degree from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), and he has since acted in over 150 movies and almost a dozen TV series in smaller but important parts.
In the late 1980s television series “Nukkad,” he is most known for portraying the barber Karim. He also portrayed Anand Akela, a potential suitor of Raveena Tandon’s character in “Andaz Apna Apna,” the cricket pundit in “Lagaan,” and a member of the Indian Women’s Hockey team in “Chak De! India.”
Danish Husain, an actor for stage and screen, expressed his sympathy on Twitter.

The 1990s blockbuster movies “Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke,” “Laadla,” and “Ishq” as well as the 1988 TV series “Mirza Ghalib” are among Amrohi’s other significant works. His most recent listed film credit was “Sadak 2” (2020), in which he returned to the 1991 film “Sadak” to play Pakya.
