As the US state has been battered by catastrophic storms, previous efforts have been impeded by the weather.
The 65-year-old has been missing since January 13th, and no one has heard from him.
Mr. Sands had been missing since he failed to return from a hike in the San Gabriel Mountains north of Los Angeles, namely the Baldy Bowl area.
A California Highway Patrol aircraft equipped with a technology that can identify matching “reflective material, electronics, and in some cases credit cards” was announced through Twitter by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
A RECCO device might assist law enforcement “narrow in on a location to concentrate our search efforts,” the report said.
The sheriff’s office said on Wednesday that a second hiker who had gone missing in the same region had been located alive.
The press in his hometown of Los Angeles identified him as 75-year-old Jin Chung.
The sheriff’s office stated Mr. Chung had “weather-related injuries and a leg injury” while he was absent for almost 48 hours.
Local authorities have been issuing statements warning hikers to stay away from dangerous mountainous areas for weeks now, stating that it is “impossible to send resources to that area when a hiker goes missing” due to the weather.
Last week’s avalanches hampered ground-based rescue operations for Mr. Sands.
Nick Sands, one of his brothers, claimed that he had ended his life.
“I have come to grips with the reality he’s gone and for me that’s how I’ve dealt with it,” said Mr. Sands, who resides in North Yorkshire, England, the area where he, Julian, and their three other brothers grew up.
His loved ones have expressed gratitude to the US authorities for their search efforts, as he has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows over the years, most notably as the protagonist in the 1985 romantic comedy A Room With a View.
The family released a statement praising the “heroic search teams” who are “working on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home” despite the adverse weather conditions.
Mr. Sands and his wife, the writer Evgenia Citkowitz, make their home in the North Hollywood section of Los Angeles.
They are the proud parents of two little ones.
He has a son from his previous marriage to Sarah Sands, the editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today show.
