According to official sources on Thursday, the security cover of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has been upgraded from category ‘Y’ to category ‘Z’ by the Central government.
The determination was rendered by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in accordance with an intelligence bureau (IB) threat analysis report.
In response to the IB report, the MHA has instructed the Delhi Police to transfer responsibility for his security to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Under the ‘Y’ category, Jaishankar, 68, is presently under the continuous protection of an armed team of Delhi Police officers.
The sources further stated that the External Affairs Minister will now be safeguarded by CRPF personnel under the ‘Z’ security cover, which consists of more than a dozen armed operatives and operates around the clock in shifts throughout the nation.

Presently, the CRPF is ensuring the VIP security of approximately 176 individuals, including Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and 24 individuals who were granted this privilege in the recent past on a temporary basis in anticipation of the upcoming elections.
