The Hailakandi police said on Friday that a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader in Assam was apprehended on Thursday on charges of duping a man into paying a 5 lakh bribe for a government job.
Thursday, the Hailakandi district police arrested Ansarul Haque Choudhury, a state executive member of the minority wing of the Assam BJP, in connection with a first information report (FIR) filed against him under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Choudhury is the second BJP leader in Assam to be arrested in the past week on suspicion of defrauding individuals into paying for state government employment. The Karbi Anglong district police arrested Moon Ingtipi, another BJP official, last week on similar allegations.
In both instances, according to the police, the suspects flaunted their connections to district and state-level party leaders.
Police reported that Ansarul was arrested on Thursday evening, hours after being detained in connection with a complaint filed by Dilwar Hussain Barbhuiya of the village of Dhalai Molai. According to the FIR, Choudhury initially requested 3 lakh from Barbhuiya for a government position.
“We gave him the money because he claimed to know chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally. He showed us photographs of himself with the prime minister, Barbhuiya stated in his complaint.
A few months ago, according to Barbhuiya, Ansarul requested additional funds, and they paid him 5 lakh in three installments.
However, Choudhury was unable to fulfill his promise.
The state government distributed appointment letters last month, but our candidate’s name was not included, according to Barbhuiya’s complaint.
According to police, Ansarul Haque Choudhury was also the subject of similar complaints. In each of these instances, Choudhury convinced his victims to believe him by posting social media photographs of himself with Himanta Biswa Sarma and other government officials, including Pijush Hazarika and Ajanta Neog.

Swapan Bhattacharjee, president of the BJP’s Hailakandi chapter, acknowledged the arrest but declined to comment, citing pending judicial proceedings.
He stated on Friday, “We believe the law and police are investigating the matter, and we hope the truth will be revealed.”
Bhattacharjee stated that the state committee will determine Choudhury’s punishment.
