Anurag Kashyap, who makes movies, wishes he had spent more time with his daughter Aaliyah as she was growing up. He even told Film Companion that she spent more time with Ida Ali’s father, director Imtiaz Ali, than with him because she visited him on set so often and was friends with Ida Ali. In 2001, Aaliyah was born to Anurag and his ex-wife, Aarti Bajaj. Now, she is going to marry Shaun Gregoire.
‘I ignored a lot of things’
Anurag told Film Companion, “I’m really afraid of losing people I care about. After a long time, I’ve come to realize that in my pursuit of this, making one movie after another, this so-called hobby that I actually enjoy, I’ve left behind a lot of things. I didn’t do many things. Because it really hurt me when it happened. It happened so quickly when I lost my health. I felt like I could take on the world because I was working, doing yoga, and swimming. When I dropped it, it felt like there was nothing I could do to get it back. At that time, you feel alone and all by yourself. Then I realized that in my quest to do whatever I was doing, I had shut myself off from everyone else. Fighting always to make my movies my way, everything.”
‘Too late to apologise’
He also said, “But there comes a time when I realize my daughter has grown up all of a sudden. When I look at her old photos, I think, “Oh my God, I miss this.” I’m sitting with Aarti, Aaliyah’s friend Ida, Ida’s mom Preeti, and Imtiaz… And everyone is talking, and they’re remembering this holiday and that one. I’m just sitting there, thinking, “Where was I?” And I realize that Imtiaz has spent more time with my daughter than I have. Then it makes you feel bad inside. You don’t even know if you should say sorry, because it’s too late.

But Anurag knows that Aaliyah has already forgiven him. He told Aaliyah that making movies on a small budget meant working twice as hard. He knows he should have made time for her no matter what, though.
