Trust and acceptance from both the therapist and the client are essential in the therapeutic relationship. Creating a sense of optimism and working together to achieve common goals are common starting points. It’s a process that can be both exciting and terrifying. Yet 72.6 percent of treatment patients surveyed by Blanchard and Farber (2018) said they had lied to their doctor because they feared disappointing them.
1. We care about your well-being.
Even though they are professionals working with their clients, most therapists genuinely care about their patients. Please share your current status with us so that we may better assist you.
2. We know that your difficulties are a million times harder for you than for us.
This may sound like common sense, but you’d be astonished at how many people avoid talking to therapists for fear of being a burden. We want to hear from you if you’re experiencing severe anxiety or sadness that just won’t go away. We are not offended by the fact that some people are still having trouble despite our best efforts. You are the one actually experiencing life.
3. We carry several tools.
The majority of therapists use multiple methods in their practise. There are several therapeutic philosophies as well. We are adopting a cognitive-behavioral approach with worksheets and action plans, so please let us know if this style of treatment does not work for you. Similar to how an optometrist can modify the prescription of your glasses, we can try out different approaches to see if one works better for you.
4. We know we are not all things to all people.
It’s possible that you and your therapist won’t be a good fit. This relationship between therapist and client has been shown to be an important predictor of treatment success (Cuijpers et al., 2019), even more so than the type of therapy itself. We want to know if you aren’t feeling a connection with us or if you aren’t certain that we have the resources to help you.
5. No matter what, we hope that you will keep growing.
Each of us has room to develop further. After therapy is finished, we hope you’ll keep working to achieve your values. Please don’t lose hope if you don’t get immediate comfort. So many options await you.

In order to make progress in therapy, it is crucial that both parties are honest about their current situations. We therapists wish for your success. The better your therapist can help you, the more honest you need to be with them.
