Asian Games Badminton, 2023: PV Sindhu loses women’s singles quarterfinals

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, was loses in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles competition at the Asian Games.

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, was loses in the quarterfinals of the women’s singles competition at the Asian Games. Sindhu, presently ranked fifteenth, was unable to find her form and lost in consecutive games, 16-21, 12-21, in a 47-minute match.

Sindhu won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics by defeating Bingjiao in consecutive games. However, in this Asian Games match, Bingjiao avenged that defeat on her home court, preventing Sindhu from advancing upon her previous Asian Games medal accomplishments of bronze in 2014 Incheon and silver in 2018 Jakarta.

The first game of their match began with both competitors exchanging points until Bingjiao gained a 9-5 advantage. Sindhu struggled to effectively cover the court, allowing Bingjiao to score points with precision placements and powerful smashes. As a result, Bingjiao won the first game comfortably in 23 minutes.

Sindhu’s struggles persisted in the second game, as Bingjiao jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead. Bingjiao capitalized on Sindhu’s shallow returns by consistently earning points with well-executed smashes. Bingjiao quickly regained control of the game and surged ahead to a 12-8 lead, despite Sindhu’s temporary resurgence by scoring four consecutive points to narrow the deficit to 8-9.

Sindhu ultimately labored to mount a comeback and appeared to have conceded as Bingjiao quickly concluded the game and the match.
