Wednesday marked the first day of Chaitra Navratri by performing ‘aarti’ at the famous Jhandewalan Temple in Delhi.

Devotees visited the temple to pray to Goddess Durga and request her blessings. People were observed attentively waiting in line for their turn to offer prayers. On the temple grounds, priests were chanting mantras and sacred music was being performed.

People also flocked to Chhatarpur Temple on the first day of Chaitra Navratri to witness the early morning ‘aarti.’

Chaitra Navratri or Vasant Navratri is observed in India during the springtime and is a significant nine-day Hindu festival.

This year, the nine-day celebrations will commence on March 22 and end on March 30. Each day is devoted to a distinct avatar of the goddess Durga, whose power and attributes are worshipped.

The first day of Chaitra Navratri coincides with the ‘Shukla Paksha,’ or full moon phase. The rituals conducted on each of the nine days to honour the goddess Durga vary daily. It also commemorates the birthday of Lord Rama, which typically occurs on the ninth day of the Navratri celebration, hence the name Rama Navratri.
