According to the India Meteorological Department, the above-average temperatures seen in February will persist into March (IMD).
IMD’s long-range forecast (LRF) for March through May indicates that above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation will persist throughout the period.

Using probability models, the IMD predicted that March’s maximum and minimum temperatures would be above average. The average maximum temperature for the month in the city is 28 degrees Celsius, while the average minimum temperature is 14.7 degrees Celsius. The city is also unlikely to receive the average monthly precipitation of 18,5 millimetres.

Director of IMD Chandigarh Manmohan Singh stated, “Rainfall during this period is dependent on western disturbances” (WD). To produce precipitation, tropical cyclones must be intense, and due to global factors, this will continue to be less likely. We can anticipate elevated temperatures due to a lack of precipitation.
Notably, the city also experienced a warmer-than-average March in 2022. In fact, with an average maximum temperature of 30.9°C, it was the warmest March since IMD’s Sector-39 observatory began maintaining records. The average minimum temperature was also above normal at 16.6 degrees Celsius.

An anti-cyclonic movement formed over Rajasthan last year, resulting in zero precipitation in March, making it the dry March in the past 14 years.

In February of this year, a similar system formed over Gujarat and portions of Rajasthan.

Singh added that it was too early to tell if the same trend would continue during the monsoon season, despite the fact that below-average rainfall is expected this summer.
After a few days of partly cloudy weather and mild winds due to an active WD, another WD is anticipated to impact the city on Saturday. Monday will see the return of clear skies, with rain remaining unlikely.

Meanwhile, the greatest temperature dropped from 29.8°C on Wednesday to 29.7°C on Thursday, but remained four degrees above average. The minimum temperature fell from 15.3°C to 15°C, but remained four degrees above average. Over the next three days, the maximum temperature may reach 30 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will remain between 15 and 16 degrees Celsius.
