Chetan Sharma resigned as chief selector following a media outlet’s sting operation. Chetan Sharma was heard in the video discussing a variety of topics, including the connection between former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and former captain Virat Kohli.
Last month, Chetan Sharma was reappointed as head selector, but the controversial sting operation placed him in a precarious position.
Chetan Sharma submitted his resignation letter to BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Friday. Chetan was overheard in the sting revealing that he spent 30 minutes speaking with India captain Rohit Sharma and that Hardik Pandya would visit him late at night to discuss his future.
During the sting operation, Sharma, who was restored by the BCCI after being suspended for India’s performance at the T20 World Cup in Australia, was filmed hurling aspersions on players such as Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. During the sting operation, Sharma allegedly disclosed private conversations with head coach Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli.
The former India fast bowler also alleged that he and team management did not agree on Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery from a stress fracture for the September T20I series against Australia.
He further asserted that T20I skipper Hardik Pandya, fast bowler Umesh Yadav, and Deepak Hooda paid him regular house calls. Chetan also examined the connection between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, stating that Kohli and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly engaged in an ego fight.
Chetan’s remarks were not well taken by the BCCI’s leadership, and existing players of the national team lost faith in him. Chetan and the entire selection committee were fired following India’s elimination from the T20 World Cup semifinals in Australia. He reapplied for and was reappointed to the position.
