Clash at MCD House: The house of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was adjourned for the fifth time on Thursday morning, as AAP and BJP councillors continued to clash amid heavy chaos and sloganeering.
Since Wednesday, the MCD house has been adjourned for the fifth time. The house was repeatedly disrupted by the heavy sloganeering and disorder. According to the situation became so chaotic that council members began tossing ballot boxes into the well. Some were seen pushing others, while others are seen exchanging blows.
The chaos broke out during the election for the members of the standing committee when the BJP claimed that councillors were taking photographs of the ballots with their mobile phones during the secret voting, which is a violation of the secret ballot. Consequently, the BJP has demanded that the votes cast be disregarded and new elections be held.
While the house was adjourned, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj made a scathing attack against the BJP, saying, “The BJP councillors are attempting to delay the elections for the standing committee. The Supreme Court had stated unequivocally that all elections must occur during the first sitting. Therefore, we only want elections to take place today, whether they occur at night or in the morning.”
He added that, “The BJP intends to conduct the entire election of the standing committee again. In this manner, the process will continue forever. The MCD Secretary has also informed us that they only have 245 ballots and that we cannot rerun the entire election.”
Shehzad Poonawalla, a spokesperson for the BJP, responded to the AAP by labelling it a “Anarchist Violent Party.”
“AAP equals Anarchist Acrid Party. Fearing defeat and cross-voting, you orchestrate every attempt to subvert and trample the rules and laws! Play then the victim card! The citizens of Delhi had better brace themselves if this is how the new mayor will conduct business on Day 1 “he stated via Twitter
Earlier, during the conflict, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi claimed that BJP councillors attempted to attack her during the elections for the Standing Committee.
On Twitter, Shelly Oberoi asserted, “As per Supreme Court orders, BJP Councillors just attempted to attack me while I was conducting elections for the Standing Committee! The BJP’s Gundagardi has reached the point where they are attempting to attack a female mayor.”
Shelly Oberoi was elected as the new mayor of Delhi earlier in the day after receiving 150 votes on Wednesday.
“I assure you that I will administer the House in accordance with the Constitution. I anticipate that you will all maintain the dignity of the House and contribute to its efficient operation “As soon as she was elected mayor earlier that day, Mayor of Delhi Shelly Oberoi stated.
The newly elected mayor called it a “huge responsibility” and thanked Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. “Today, I was given the chance to serve the people of Delhi.”
Shelly Oberoi attacked the ruling BJP with the phrase “Goondagardi (Hooliganism) has been defeated”
“The truth has triumphed. Today, it has been demonstrated that the citizens of Delhi have triumphed. It is not an AAP victory. It is a democratic victory. It is a victory for Delhi’s citizens “Oberoi said.
The polls opened at 11.30 a.m., following the Supreme Court’s order that the Delhi mayoral election be held. The court also determined that aldermen (nominated councillors) had no voting rights.
AAP candidate Aaley Mohammad Iqbal was also elected as the new deputy mayor of Delhi later that day.
He was able to defeat the BJP candidate Kamal Bagri by garnering 147 votes to Bagri’s 116.
Due to political squabbling between the Aam Aadmi Party and Bharatiya Janata Party, the previous three attempts to elect the mayor failed. The first meeting occurred on January 6, the second on January 24, and the last on February 6.
