Wednesday, Congress leader P Chidambaram stated that India’s position in the world economy in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) “makes us proud,” while its per capita ranking “must make us humble and determined to grow at a faster rate.”
“India currently ranks fifth in terms of GDP,” This makes us pleased,” the former minister of finance tweeted. “India ranks 128th in terms of per capita income. This must humble us and inspire us to grow at a quicker rate.”
Shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for a third term for his government, highlighting India’s standing in global economies and promising to make it the world’s third-largest economy with a faster-than-present rate of growth and development, Chidambaram sent out his tweet.
Modi, speaking at the inauguration of a world-class convention and exhibition centre on the site of Delhi’s Pragati Maidan, stated that India has been described as a bright point in an otherwise bleak global economy.
“At the start of our first term, India had the tenth-largest economy in the globe. India is the fifth largest economy in the globe in the second term. I guarantee that India will be among the top three economies in the world by the end of the third term,” he said.
India has been described as the bright point in an otherwise dismal global economy.
According to him, the country is witnessing the results of his government’s efforts. “India’s development journey will continue.”
“India will become one of the world’s top three economies. This is Modi’s promise,” he stated. “I would also like to assure the citizens that during our third term following 2024, the country’s development journey will accelerate.”
The second term of the Modi government terminates in May of next year.
In an obvious response to the prime minister’s ‘guarantee’, Chidambaram penned, “One day, India will become the third largest economy in the world. But our objective must be to increase per capita income and rank among the world’s top 10 nations.”
“Let’s speak about per capita income. That is the genuine indicator of success.”
Rajya Sabha member and Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh criticised the prime minister, stating that it was “typical” of him to “give his personal guarantee on a mathematical certainty.”
“India’s emergence as the world’s third largest economy in this decade has been predicted for quite some time, and it is assured — regardless of which political party forms the next government,” he tweeted.

“The key difference is the type of growth INDIA parties guarantee: growth that is significantly more socially inclusive, growth that creates jobs rather than destroys them, growth that raises incomes for all, and growth that is ecologically sustainable.”
