Delhi Mayor Polls: The Supreme Court has now ruled, in a major victory for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), that nominated members cannot vote in the Delhi mayoral election. The court also ordered election notices to be issued within 24 hours. The election to the position had been postponed three times previously due to a commotion in the House, when AAP and BJP members were unable to reach an agreement on the issue of allowing nominated members to vote.
In response to the apex court’s decision, the chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, referred to the ruling as a “win for democracy.” Kejriwal stated in a tweet, “… Many thanks to SC. In two and a half months, Delhi will now have a mayor. It has been demonstrated that the LG and the BJP are jointly issuing illegal and unconstitutional directives in Delhi.”

After allegations were made by the Aam Aadmi Party, that the BJP attempted to seize control of the civic body by electing a BJP leader to the position of mayor, the election for mayor was postponed three times over the course of more than two months. In the election for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, also known as the MCD, which took place in December, the AAP had gained a significantly larger number of seats than the BJP.

The council members or aldermen that had been appointed by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena had attempted to vote in the previous election in Delhi Mayor Polls. As a result of this, the AAP had objected, and the house plunged into turmoil as a result of their actions. The election was ultimately postponed for a second time. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, had claimed that the aldermen would have increased the BJP’s electoral support.
